How much better is a 5th over a bumper pull? I am looking to buy a new one. I just hate the idea of giving up the bed. Right now I have a shell and love being able to lock up my junk and it doubles as a place to crash on over nighters. Plus I have 2 trucks and not excited about having to pay up to prep both for a 5th. Looking in the 26-28 bumper or 32 max in fifth.

I'm kind in the same dilemma. I've got a 2500 HD crew cab short bed with a shell on the back, sliding rear window and a home made mattress pad in the back. It's great for safe storage, passengers sleeping during trips, and as a "motel on wheels" when I've had too much to drink or want to sleep at a rest stop (when not towing).

I know a 5th wheel is going to hold a lot more weight and handle better because the weight is sitting on the rear axle.....every inch your tongue weight is behind the rear axle magnifies that weights effect on your truck. If you have a lot of weight on a rear hitch, you probably will need a weight distributing hitch, which are a bit of a pain connecting and disconnecting.

The 5th wheels can be a lot roomier too.

Wonder what you guys who have had both think of these issues.

Night and day difference. 5th wheel is way more efficient to tow as you're putting the king pin weight directly over the rear axle and displacing a percentage of that weight to the front axle. It's very much like a fulcrum. If you look at a ball mount the weight of the trailer is at a serious disadvantage being so far from the rear axle of the tow vehicle. It's why ball mounts tend to have the hippity-hop bucking action.

When I'm towing my 5er in wind I can blow by all the ball mounts because the 5er and truck act almost as one unit, much more stable. Fuel mileage is much better towing my 5er over any ball mount I owned. No chains or torsion bars to deal with either. The big negative to a 5er is your truck bed space but it hasn't been near of an issue as I thought. This is my third 5er and because we tow/camp a lot I wouldn't ever go back to a ball mount.

If you talk to full timers who prefer trailers over motorhomes and have towed for years the majority all have 5ers for the reasons I mentioned. Just a better platform for stability and efficiency. Next on the list would be the improved interior space over a ball mount and the storage space is vastly better on a 5er.

Hope I explained it okay...

2004 Jayco Greyhawk, 26 foot, 1 slide. Had several great memories in this baby with the family but sold it after 6 years with only 11k miles on it. Had a diesel sitting idle and did not want to maintain 2 engines. Sold.

2010 Jayco Octane, 29 foot, toy hauler, no slide. Would like to upgrade to a 5er down the road.

The wife and I went a different direction. We dropped from a fifth wheel down to a cab over. We went with an 11.5 arctic fox. When the slide is open we have as much room as several friends 22 bumper pulls. The advantage is that we are all on the truck leaving the hitch available to pull toys. I do not have a boat just yet but am fully planning on rectifying that this fall / winter (looking now also). Being able to tow toys and bring home with us is a real advantage. Its kind of like an RV but when it comes time to do something like launch a boat or run to the store, the vehicle is separate from the living space. Launching a boat with an RV can be interesting to say the least. I launch with just the truck..... The biggest down sides are I can only carry it on a dually as it weights somewhere in the 5500 lb. range when loaded and I am a little limited on the amount of junk I can bring. This last one is important as I scuba dive out of it regularly. I now own a small box trailer for the dive trips and to bring the motorcycle..........

Our 2005 Weekend Warrior LE 3505, as with all of our toys, its not the nicest or newest one out there, but it gets us out there to have fun.

Originally bought it to haul my '99 Ranger, this picture is the one and only time it was ever in the trailer. Had to get a more practical family toy, the Polaris Ranger

We went the other way. In December we sold our cabover, Lance 845 and bought a toyhauler. We had the Lance for exactly the reasons you are looking at, we would come out to the river towing the boat all in one vehicle. It was a great system while it lasted but we decided we wanted more room now that we live here.

This was ours. Worked great out in the desert, but sold it a few years ago. Time to change it up for something smaller. DSC01117.jpg

In the meantime we barrow this one from time to time.

5th tows insanely better, and BajaMike and rivrrts429 nailed it. I started with a 21' Tahoe Transport, went to a 26' Gearboox, and now have a 32' Shockwave (5th). At first backing it up was tricky. They have a different pivot point and I looked like a rookie, but got the hang of it.

Why would you set up both trucks? Just install the hitch on Truck 1 and call it a day. That way you can keep the shell on Truck 2 for over nighters.

Also, when you say 32' max in a 5th, is that overall length? Everyone that I know who bought a 28' (measures +/- 32' overall) regrets it and wish they had gone with the 32' (measures +/- 35'-37' overall).

For me, buying the 5th was about the gained interior space. Having two kids we needed the room!

For those considering a 5th wheel vs. a travel trailer... get a 5er!

We have had the Lance Cabover 11.5 with Class V Titan hitch pulling the boat.
We went to a toy hauler bumper pull. Hated towing that thing. Had anti-sway bars, load leveling hitch and all.
Tried a MoHo for a few years and now that we have the 5th wheel, it is the best of ALL worlds.

I have a Chevy 2500HD shortbed with a 6.0 gasser.
I bought the 16k Pull Rite Super glide sliding hitch.

http://www.carid.com/2016-ram-1500-trailer-hitches/pullrite-5th-wheel-hitches-125246349.html

For the bed I have the roll-up vinyl Truxport tonneau cover.
Works great. Just roll it up when you tow.

Damn, TPC. There's no way, no how, you could get that thing humming on 30 amps in parker...funky amp booster or not...:cool

Works great on the 50 AMP at SamStown when we visit Granny Axehandle.
Has triple A/C.

We have a 28' Fleetwood bumper pull we keep in Parker. (We don't take the Toy Hauler in Summer.)
30 AMPs feed the Fleetwoods main roof A/C and a 8K BTU window unit with amps left over.
Ordered it with the winterized extra insulation that dbbls duty against heat.
Campground queen. Works great.

Emerald Cove will never go 50 AMP in our lifetimes but they did upgrade the electrical transformers to deliver a true 30 AMPS.

Pirates is 50 AMPs on the Cali side isn't it?
Maybe I shouldn't mention that.

I have one of those AMP booster boxes if anyone ever wants to try it out.
I don't think they help much if at all.

Light years difference.
Like having a black GF, you'll never go back.

Then, if you can get a dually in the picture, even better.
We towed the 43' 5'er with the single rear wheel until the dually we ordered arrived.
Huge diff with a dually.
98O7d7Y.jpg

We've towed the bumper pull around the USA and the 5th wheel around most the USA.
The bumper pull always has you by the nut sack. The 5th wheel is only noticeable on steep grades.

image.jpg

We ordered the 5th with Correct Track. It really handles well. Backing with Correct Track is a bit tricky and slippery.
I have to not act all proud of my amazing Napoleon Dynomite driving skills and see saw it in a few licks.

The change made sense for us when it was just the two of us, no that we have a 1 year old, we have a question or two. On the same note, there is a huge size difference between what we both have.

Found this gem of a Diesel Pusher 3 years ago. 34' Holiday Rambler. In a field in Ojai, at the Camp Pendleton not so secret beach camping spot and Ellen making coffee in the galley.

I'm actually surprised how many people have a 5'er in this group since the overwhelming majority of us have boats. I really wanted to get a dually 1 ton and an in-bed camper for all the reasons listed above. Then we got news of the 2nd girl coming along..... and after having had a camper as a family when I was little, my parents and us 3 boys, I dunno if I want to deal with how cramped it gets. Specially with 2 girls instead of boys. Lol!

Although this one would be badass!!!

Rincon!! Its a crap shoot but if you can fire up there on a Tuesday and find a spot you can stay through the weekend and commute back and forth to work throughout the week.

This is what we do and its like a mini vacation and the kids love it, they run themselves ragged on the beach and crash out.

I've neve towed my fifth. It sits on a site for 7 months then gets moved my the park to storage for 5 months. In 4 years it's probably travelled 2 miles.

It takes a little effort. You have to go on base, which is easy to get the annual permit, $40.00 bucks or maybe $75? Then you go online and see if they're doing maneuvers the weekend you want to go. If they are, beach closed, if not, beach open! It's like 20 bucks a weekend. You just can't go into the water. It's remote, isolated and a small community of campers that would give me shit for disclosing the secret handshake, but it's just you and me here chatting.
You can find this info online as well.
