THere are a couple people up here that bought $100K trailers with pumps and big filter banks so when Mead and Powell dried up they would be the only game in town to recycle your pool water. That new business gamble back fired the last 2 years and they are now trying to push how much cleaner their filtered water is. Its a few $thousand dollars to clean the water compared to a couple hundred to drain and refill.

We've used a service in Costa Mesa for our house in Huntington Beach, cheaper than draining and refilling the pool at the local rates. As I remember the trailer (giant mobile RO unit) was built in Havasu.

I have a few customers that get it done every few years. They swear by it.

For areas like havasu where tap water is trash. This process will actually return cleaner water to pool than a drain and refill. But 10Xs the cost, so its all relative

I have my pool auto-fill running through a carbon filter.
When I drain it, I then also refill the pool through the same type of filter.
My pool guy thought I was nuts but he was shocked how clear & sparkly it is, especially being Havasu water.

Hey Ziggy, can you take some pics of this? I'm curious because our water has a lot of minerals in it. I'd like to purchase whatever I need and have the pool company add it in during the build.

It's one of these types of 2.5x10 inch drinking water filters. I plumbed it inline leading to the autofill along with a hose bib teed off it for when I drain/refill the pool.
I have another filter & housing with garden hose fittings so I can hook up a second hose during refill.
If nothing else it certainly helps with sediment & solids removal.

I use the 1 micron sediment filters. Just changed mine today in just over a month.
The dirtier filter is the one that comes to the house. It filters everything from the pool to irrigation and before it comes into the house.
The other dirty filter is another whole house filter before it goes to the RO and everything inside the house.
They say tap water is safe to drink lol

How often do you change the cartridges? Several times a year I assume.

2 or 3 times.
I got lucky and found a half dozen of the carbon filters for $5 at one of those Amazon returns outlets.

I have two of the larger 4.5x10 inch whole house filters(sediment & carbon) pre-softener & RO but in the garage so they don't filter the hose bibs, just all the indoor faucets.

I'm using an activated charcoal filter, no deionization. More or less it's just a fridge water/ice filter.
I'm by far no expert but I believe a charcoal filter is basically just removing the chlorine from the water which kind of defeats the effort going into a pool. It doesn't reduce the TDS by much, maybe 10%?

It is a 1 micron filtration....so 🤷‍♂️.
The end result is what matters to me. Pool water is much nicer looking than it ever was prior to me putting it in.
