Has anyone had their pool tiles blasted to remove the calcium ring? Are there any recommendations near the Whittier area?

Couldn't you just get some muriatic acid on a rag with some gloves on and wipe it clean? maybe drop the pool level 6" or so?

yes, ... sort of. The acid would destroy the rag, so I would not do it that way. I did this recently in a different way.

1) drop the pool level to equal with the bottom of the tile/top of water.
2) buy 6 gallons of pool acid
3) buy a pump sprayer
4) cut the solution in the pump sprayer to 50/50 water to pool acid
5) at the lowest flow possible flood each tile with the solution and watch is smoke and fizz
6) Go around the pool hundreds of times doing this for two days straight and 30-40 beers worth of time.
7) every 10 or so laps throw in a pressure washing with a 3100 psi honda type gas washer with the smallest nozzle
8) once you are done, drain the pool, acid wash the plaster/pebble and refill

Finally, once all done, swear to never do it again and pay the guy 500 buck to bead blast the tile next time!

When i was a kid we did the family pool with a rag probably 2 or 3 times when we drained it and changed the water, the rags never dissolved in the amount of time it took to clean the tiles. Maybe if it's really bad i could that being an issue, but i remember it literally wiping right off.

Using the sprayer is fine but you gotta wipe the stuff, you can't let the acid dry and re-calcify.

I will add that i'm no pool expert, just throwing it out there if there is a solution to save the headache.

Find someone to bead blast it, nothing else will do it. I bead blasted mine about 10 years ago with a set up a coworker had, worked awesome, but was still a bunch of work. Definitely worth the money.

I’m getting ready to hit it again with a pumice stone. Not a big deal. One day do a side or two sides. I don’t know how bad yours is but it’s not hard to do just takes time. I’ll drink beer while in the pool and do it for $5.

I had a pool tile cleaning business. Here is a tip. If you want your pool tile to stay clean (longer) after they are blasted/cleaned, apply this on the tile. Once a month in So Cal and every couple of weeks in AZ.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Howard-Woo...nditioner-Actual-Net-Contents-16-oz/999918618

This product is available at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Amazon and many other places. It puts a nice deep luster under tile and also keeps the calcium to a minimum. It also puts the barrier on the tile so when you do get calcium it’s a lot easier to remove. Apply it with a large sponge.

Be careful using muriatic acid directly onto the tile. If you haven’t done so in the past with the new pools test one out before you go blasting away. Some of these tiles from China have adverse effect when hit with acid.

My pool is in Arizona and with the hard water and high evap rate it needs to be cleaned every 3 - 4 years. I have had it for 22 years so I have tried a couple different ways. Pumice stones seem to etch/scratch the tile and then the hard water stain just comes back quicker with all the nice places to attach to on a scratched surface. You probably need to consider several factors like the type of tile, condition and age etc... My two cents having done pumice, acid and bead blasting is to go with the bead blasting service that includes a pool draining, acid wash and fill with chems... AND, I am super cheap and a DIY guy. I physically did all the trenching, plumbing, electric, equipment and tile on my pool.

The best thing to do is take better care of your pool!

Ask me how I know.

I went for YEARS thinking I knew what I was doing, because I did what all the pool guys told me to do. My tile was covered in scale. Today, there is no scale on my pool at all, and I didn't do anything other that monitor the water properly. Once the water was "balanced" the scale just disappeared.

"Balanced" is not just checking the chlorine and PH, you have to check a number of other things as well. The way I went about doing this was checking out the Taylor Technologies web site. I can't remember exactly how I found it, but there is a wealth of information there.

I bought one of their test kits and the rest is history. My pool has never looked (or felt) better. I think this is the one I have...

Got questions?? Try this page...

The other cool thing is, once you have their test kit, there is an app for your phone as well. Just put in the numbers from the kit (after you put all your pool info in) and the app will tell you exactly what you need to do. The little book that comes with the kit will fill you in on what products you need to buy as well.

Buying their kit was the best thing I've ever done for my pool. No scrubbing or glass beading required.

I tried the pummice stone, it didnt make a dent. the Acid.... didnt work. I doubt you can see how thick the calcium is from the picture, but its pretty bad. I think blasting is the only way. OutColed, are you in So Cal? any recommendations?

You are welcome. It won't disappear overnight, but you'll notice the difference right away when you jump in, once you get your water balanced.

The deposits will just melt away in time.

When I was checking around thinking that I needed that glass bead deal, it was about a buck a foot. It's much cheaper to get your water to spec!

Pumice or Bead Blasting is the only way...been doing it for 15 years. Decided to hang it up this year and finished my last blasting last week. Don't even thing about acid.

So with a bead blast.......should we expect to have to drain and fill too? I thought they just drop the water level to do it? Or maybe they do both. Might be due for a refill anyways.

I spoke with them yesterday. They drop the level to 6 inches below the tile line. bead blast, vacuum the bottom of the pool to pick up the media, clean off pool deck and skim the surface for particulate.

Every one of my clients pools I have the scale removed within a week we pull the trailer up and have it RO. Works Really well, great to swim in and if your water chemistry is kept to proper levels keeps the scale from returning or at least as fast. I have clients now that enjoy the RO process and the feel of the water, they get there pool RO every year. Make sure for you all that have glass tile your tile cleaner uses the right process and media for blasting.
