Mercury 525 Bravo XR... Engages into reverse perfectly but has a significant delay into forward... Is there a simple linkage adjustment? If I run the RPM's up just a bit it will bang into gear BUT I'm sure that's going to lead to a much larger problem... She's currently floating in the Islander marina and I'm hoping to salvage the weekend without blowing the drive off...

I had the same problem with my 525 XR on my Topcat 1 last year. I heard it could be a linkage adjustment or the shift cone.

I drained the drive oil and it came out black. I refilled the drive with good Mercury oil and my issue went away.

Its worth a try to change the drive oil and see what happens.

How many hours are on it? I had a delay going into gear and it turned out to be the cone clutch.

Sorry to hear of the issue. Sadly I have no help except a ride to the top of the for…. Best of luck to you and the family.

After reading the replies and watching a few YouTube videos I'm confident that it's the cone clutch. I've started making calls around town for an emergency fix & need to make a decision to try and milk it through the weekend or put her back on the trailer... Thanks for the input guys!

Had that issue and dealt with it 3 separate trips and finally bit the bullet. Once repaired I kicked myself in the ass for not doing it sooner.

I have replaced both cone clutches within around 250 hours of use. When shifting into gear, the response would start to be slower and would take a couple of seconds to ultimately engage. It sounds like this is what you are dealing with. If you are going to try to get through the weekend, I'd be aware of the delay to shift especially around the docks. I would not run the RPMs up to get it to shift as this will put more stress on your drive. I don't recall the exact cost, but I don't remember it being too expensive to replace the cone clutch.
