I don't trust "ANY" dog/animal around my kid.

You left out Uncle, babysitter, neighbor, and even parent who, statistically speaking, are far more likely to kill, mame, or molest a child. And because of this statistic, brews mean dogs no matter what breed. Evil fucking humans. Lots of them out there who deserve to die. A child is 800 more times to be killed by a caretaker than a pitbull and let's not even coat tail molestation into this fact because it is even more disgusting.
Please, hater or not, I ask you to spend a couple minutes to read some facts in this link for me unless, of course, you still believe Obama is your Messiah. If that is the case, please buy a gun and use it on yourself.

Comparing human threats with pet choices. Stretching a bit now, wouldn't you say?

My reaction was not a knee jerk reaction based on emotion about seeing a dead baby half eaten.
It was a reality check, sir.

I can lock up my guns, I can (and did) educate my kids about guns, strangers, weird Uncle Eddie, and other real life dangers. Want to guess what else I added to that list?
Yep, your pit bulls.
Keep them to yourself, keep them away from me and my family, keep them off my property.
There are a couple around here that get loose on occasion (rural), I know their names and they take off when I yell at them. They are actually afraid of our cats. They don't seem to know they are pits and are just like the ones I owned before. But the day the don't respond when I yell their names is the day they get a 12 gauge slug to the head.
No half measures here. Don't feel picked on...I'd do the same with any big dog on the insurance dangerous dog list.

You seem like a good owner, that's great. But being the defender of all things pit is not realistic, and your data concerning deaths is way off.
Calling them "pitties" like they are cuddly puppies does not lessen the physical capabilities that they posses.

You use the word "hate" a lot. Do you know what it means?
I don't hate pitbulls. I have owned 2.

The second one I put down after my friends pit ate his 1 year old little girl.

To understand this correctly, you killed your dog.. Because someone else's dog did something horrendous? That makes about as much sense as killing Joe because he looks like Mike, and Mike robbed a liquor store.

When I had my Pitbulls.. If I ran across something like that, the first thought that would pop into my head would be something like "I'm glad I have a strong dog to protect my kids against some crazy animal like that." Not "I'm going to kill a member of my only family because the neighbors dog killed a baby."

That is truly insane..

I have a very strong feeling that none of us would even recognize a pit from back then.

I read a pretty interesting history on Pits and their evolution once.. Started off about 20 lbs in England fighting Bull's and Lions, all sorts of shit they would put in the ring. Blood sports became illegal so the rings had to be a lot smaller so they started fighting them against each other. That same thing came across the ocean to America with the immigrants. Strangely they are the only breed of dog that was historically bred NOT TO BITE A HUMAN. If a dog bit a handler in the ring, it was killed on the spot.

When people began to migrate West, the Dogs were bred with larger dogs to make them 50'ish pounds so they could run along side the wagon trains for long distances. The dogs job (ironically enough) was to protect Children and camp from larger wild animals. Everything from Bobcats, to mountain Lions, etc..

Previous to this onslaught from the Media on Pitbulls, they were considered by most to be the best breed for families with children. They were continuously represented as such in all sorts of campaigns, and media. One example of that is the TV show the Lil Rascals.. Note what kind of dog they had (Pitbull)

Had to have been there I guess.

Also, I grew up in an environment where dogs were dogs, not to be confused with people and or family members.
Any snap from any dog towards any family member, especially a child, was an immediate death sentence.
When I saw what MY dog could do if it ever chose to, it was not an "insane" decision in the least.
My friend loved that dog of his, but he shot it dead before the cops even got there.
I chose not to take a chance. It was not easy, but it certainly wasn't crazy.
You guys really think the media is to blame?
Maybe the media is just catching up?

I get what you are saying Dave, I honestly do. But that incident displayed the risk graphically.

You know, sheep dogs actually injure or kill quite a few sheep...its a fine line.

I completely understand the dogs are dogs concept.. But I fail to see the logic in killing your dog, because someone else's dog did something. I don't care how you word it, or how you justified it, it's insane.

It is my sincere and overwhelming wish that you both live your entire lives proving me wrong.
Because the only way you will see it from my eyes is to see it from my eyes, and I do not want that to happen to anyone.

What you saw is horrible. How you reacted and somehow justified it is crazy. It is no different then coming on the seen of a horrible car wreck.. Then somehow justifying having your kids car crushed because it's the same brand or rather the same color.

Wicky, this thread has nothing to do with politics. Stop trying to bring them up.. It's irritating to say the least. There's a section for that.

Using this example, If your daughter had a pinto and you knew of 4-5 people who had been in a wreck and burned alive. Would you keep letting your daughter drive that car? Sometimes preventative measures just need to be taken. And he did what he felt was best to insure the safety of his family. You or I don't have to understand it, He is the one who would have to live with himself if something happened and he chose to do nothing to prevent it.

Except.. it's not like that.. Because the odds would be more like having a Honda, and knowing someone that died in one.

No, it's different.

Uh... No.

There was no stronger analogy I could come up with at the moment that couldn't be truer regarding the media....

These Pit threads are re-occuring for 1 reason, another Pit has killed or maimed a human. I figure we average 2-3 threads per year and have had as many as 4 maybe. Ironically many have several additional "attack" incidents occur during the thread's run.

Just from thinking back on the threads, most all involve dogs that have lived "harmoniously" with families, other animals, and neighbors. The common incident seems to be a dog that just "snapped". Yet the bulk of arguments blame the incidents on bad owners. This is a puzzling conflict of views if given proper thought.

I'm not condemning the breed, but will never own one nor will my grandkids be allowed around one. My family has declared they will not be a statistic. Additionally we have had German Shepherds, Chows, Boxers, and several other large breed dogs. All have been raised properly without incident, yet kids the dogs are not familiar with are not allowed to mess with them. Personally I don't trust any dog around strangers or folks they are not familiar with. The dogs are protective towards family more than many realize and if confused, they will do what they think is their job, protecting their "family". Dogs, and all pets for that matter, require responsibility and those pets potentially equipped to do great harm should be closely monitored and not put into situations they might react negatively to.

As far as dangerous pets go, I personally believe the most dangerous are horses. I recently lost a close friend who had trained, raced, and rode horses his entire life. Trying to break a fiesty animal that went over forward, he suffered a fatal blow to his head. I've personally known around a dozen older teens and adults killed in horse incidents and many more that survived serious injuries. Just like Pits and other breeds with reps for trouble, it gets blamed on the human, but dead is dead. Be willing to pay a great price if you wish.......

My Red Chow was the spookiest dog I have owned.
Gave it away at about a year old to a guy that had a big ranch in AK.

Chows and Dalmations are the 2 breeds as a whole, I believe to be the most likely to bite. Both very owner loyal and territorial.

The 3 Most Aggressive Dog Breeds Revealed! ? Pit Bulls? Rottweilers? You?ll Be Surprised?.
July 8th, 2008 by Dan

With Breed Specific Legislation acts being brought forward in more and more areas across the country, dogs like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers and other ?scary? looking breeds are in danger of losing their homes and even their lives. These breeds are often touted as being extremely aggressive ? however a new study released this week in the journal of Applied Animal Behavior Science provides some statistical facts on what breeds actually ARE the most aggressive ? and the answers may surprise you!

The study involved researchers from the University of Pennsylvania as well as 6,000 dog owners. The number one aggressive breed out of the 33 dogs surveyed? The Dachshund. Yes ? the wiener dog. The study found that ?one in five dachshunds have bitten or tried to bite strangers, and a similar number have attacked other dogs; one in 12 have snapped at their owners.?

Number two on the list is an even more diminutive breed ? the Chihuahua, while Jack Russells came in third.
The researchers say that the bite statistics that have been released in recent years are skewed because most dog bites are not reported. Big dog bites are more likely to require medical attention, but this does not mean that those breeds are doing the majority of the biting.
One of the teams researchers, Dr. James Serpell, believes that smaller breeds may be more genetically predisposed to aggressive behavior than their larger counterparts. Serpell says, ?Reported levels of aggression in some cases are concerning, with rates of bites or bite attempts rising as high as 20 per cent toward strangers and 30 per cent toward unfamiliar dogs.?
Pit Bulls and Rottweilers scored average or below average in the aggression study. Breeds that scored on the low end are Basset Hounds, Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Siberian Huskies and Greyhounds.

Do you have any idea just how far I can drop kick a fucking Dachshund, Chihuahua, or Jack Russell?

I'm out, good luck guys.
Just remember there are valid and good reasons pits have a reputation.
And good reason home insurance is usually voided with a pit, and it isn't the nightly news

s
No one would argue that.
The post was a reply to Tex's belief a Dalmation or Chow would be the quickest to bite.

So it really doesn't boil down to attitude of a dog for you but capability?
Did you see that early photo of the pit from WW1? Vs the image of a modern pit?
They hardly look the same.Remember the conversation we had about the last pit thread regarding breeders, breed standards, ethical breeders, etc?
When they start breeding super sized Jack Russell's you can't kick they will make a pitbull look like a pussy.

Pretty much accurate.
WWI was a long time ago.

Today's Jack russel goes off and your looking at stitches.
Today's "pit" goes off and it is another headline.
That's reality.

Was on a call two weeks ago and some little shit stain kept biting my leg. The owner is standing there like it's normal.... I told her "if that little fuck bites my leg one more time I'm going to drop kick it across the street"

For someone who claimed to "speaky lil ingless" she understood clearly what I was saying and the dog was removed from the situation.

I've talked some big f'n dogs into their yard or my back seat (yes I'm talking about 4 legged furry friends) in my days. The only ones that have bit me were the little rat dogs running around.
