The whole Pirate concept is kinda cool in some weird way. You know cause they've been around for such a long time and they are still out there.

Every time I here about the Pirates I think about that South Park episode.

I don't get why they don't just hire some Blackwater type mercenaries to ride along and take care of these pesky Little pirates. A couple 50 cal rounds through their row boats and problem solved. There might be an up-tick in shark feeding frenzies around these sinking dingies, but why let a Somali lunch for the sharks go to waste.

What I don't understand is how they even get on the ship. I dont think they are getting a rope 40-50 feet up to the deck, let alone climb up it in seas. I would just be full steam ahead and let the little fuckers bounce of the side of my tanker. I understand they have launchers, but all the more reason not to stop. :D

I think the problem is that if a vessel has firearms, there are ports and territories that can't be entered. Still it doesn't seem that hard to keep someone off a ship.

I get that part of it. The picture of a tanker on the other thread, the free board must be a good 40 ft up. The news and the articles always say "managed to get aboard", HOW......

They don't need any guns. It's a fricken oil tanker, a couple high pressure pumps with nozzles, spray them down, throw them a flair. problem solved...

The pirates have RPG's ,and they would threaten to drill one into the hull causing major havoc if all that oil spills . They know the consequences of that , the enviro nazis would call to stop all oil transport by ships. Most tankers have double hulls nowdays , buy doubt they're any good against armour piercing weapons . I think putting mines around the Somalian coast is the only answer and have patrol boats by internatioal forces outside of the area .:skull

I don't understand when they say that they have no clue where these pirates will take the ship?? WTF? Don't they have some kind of GPS on them to follow the ship around?

I just want to know, what the hell are they going to do with a tanker full of un-processed oil? Its not like your going to sell it to some gas station somewhere. You cant hide a ship that big, to wait until the heats off to unload it! Maybe I just dont get it. :bash:

I guess.
It seems to me that these guys would figure out that these Hi-jackings never seem to turn out very well for the pirate. Has one of these ever gone according to the pirates plan (i.e. get rich quick and get away)? Seems the only ones who ever wins these is some countries Navy getting some target practice in. :skull

The Somalis have made tens of millions of dollas off of hijacking these ships an holding the ship and crew for ransom.

Asian fishing boats illegally take fish from Somali waters, other ships illegally dump toxics into their waters. They started out trying to defend their territory.....and then got greedy.

I think what a ship needs is mercenary rental program. For $50,000, 5 Rambo type guys rappel down onto your ship with a bunch of firepower.

They protect the ship for the week while it passes the dangerous area. Then once the ship is safe, the team gets picked up and they do it again.

:thumbsup

They use rickety ass ladders to climb the sides. Pretty scary to have a ladder in the little skiff bouncing in the seas and climbing that ladder.

If anyone wants to go "pirate hunting"

http://www.somalicruises.com/

We sail up and down the coast of Somalia waiting to get hijacked by pirates. We encourage you to bring your 'High powered weapons' along on the cruise. If you don't have weapons of your own, you can rent them on the boat.

We guarantee that you will experience at least two hijacking attempts by pirates or we will refund half your money back, including gun rental charges and any unused ammo (mini gun charges not included). How can we guarantee you will experience a hijacking? We operate at 5 knots within 12 miles of the coast of Somalia. If an attempted hijacking does not occur, we will turn the boat around and cruise by at 4 knots. We will repeat this for up to 8 days making three passes a day along the entire length of Somalia. At night the boat is fully lit and bottle rockets are shot off at intervals and loud disco music beamed shore side to attract attention.
