Pirates Cove Trip 2024 - Boating Content

Got back from our annual Pirates Cove trip with mixed feelings. This year we had a few friends back out of the trip, so we had 4 spots and only 2 RVs. This was also the first year that none of our kids made it out since they are all grown... Still, we had a great time with the group we had. Got hit with some rain a few times, but only had a few minutes of bad winds. Here are a few pictures of the trip.

My BIL did the A/C mod to his roof mounted A/Cs that was posted back on your thread. His did really well with that mod, and was a HUGE improvement over the last time he came out. My RV has a basement A/C so it does pretty well. I just use the window insulation/bubble stuff on my windows. My RV was between 80-82 with the outside temps hitting 118. At night, it was getting down to 70-72.

Yes. Seal up and make a "flow guide" at the A/C. Last time he brough their coach out, it was terrible. They couldn't get it cool enough to actually go inside. I was pretty impressed with how well it works now. He was staying as cool as mine with the mod.

Covering the windows is huge. Look into Heatshield for the interior windshield and if you can run a thermo blanket/curtains to block the heat from the driving area.

The AC diverters help push air into the vents. The ones you buy online, take away the dump features (refer to @TPC Thread) on that.

Looks like a great trip! We have doing Moabi/PC for almost 18 years and this year was the 1st year we didnt rebook... me and the kids are bummed out we didn't book this year.

That bubble protectant over the windows is the same theory as the plastic bubbles over a pool as a solar heater, but of course on the window it’s probably gonna have some aluminum reflective built into it

I’d really like to do a trip like this but the logistics of driving the motorhome and a second vehicle driving into Havasu to get boat and back to pirate then back to drop boat off just kill it for me.

All of the above… I anchor the bow out with a transom line at the beach. I’ll beach it if we are just grabbing lunch or something and heading back out. But…with the monsoon weather we were having, I pulled the boat out every night so I could sleep without worrying about it.
I don’t recommend beaching over night, or even for more than a couple of hours though. The water fluctuates quite a bit from morning to night through that area.

Yep, it’s tough to bring out the truck and rv. My wife hates driving. In the past, there was usually at least one person in the group who had a truck that we would all use as a launch and retrieve vehicle. We store our boat in Fort Mohave now so I was just happy to not have to tow it out there with the rv.

Yes, I've gone through 4 different props and right now my Hill SL5 seems to be the best. I'm getting about 13-14% slip with this prop. Nothing else I tried came close to that. I plan to add a 1" spacer this off season while the boat is in for service. From what I've heard, that should make a good improvement on the slip numbers. Also planning on the stage 3 Whipple so hoping to have some better numbers next season.

I've seen 76 with light fuel and just me in it. She will run low 70's all day with 80 gal of fuel and 4-6 people. That is with the SL5 26 pitch prop.

Yep, I was sold an 80mph boat that has yet to see that speed...LOL! This is why I'm on my 4th prop and planning the drive spacer and everything. I knew out of the gate that the Shockwave is a heavy, solid boat. Not the fastest hull by any stretch, but they also told me the 600 would put me at 80. I have mixed feelings about choosing the builder. Supposedly, the 28P Bravo 4 blade prop puts the 28'/600 combo at 80mph, but once I finally got that prop from Shockwave, I didn't like it compared to the Hill SL5. I love my boat, but I built it during the boom of 22.
With that said, I believe the drive spacer will reduce my prop slip and in turn give me a better mile per hour. The stage 3 will give me 770hp and 5800rpm but I will have to be easy on my drive until I upgrade that as well. At the end of the day, I'm the only one who wants to go that fast in my boat. As many have said before, no one else is having fun at those speeds on a deck boat. Only the driver.

I think that goes for almost any boat. Unless it'd you and another boat buddy.

Have you had a chance to compare X dimensions with another 28 Deck? Just curious.

I'm also on the hunt for more performance with my boat. I still haven't tried a standard Bravo or a 5 blade, they are both on my list.

Over 70 in a deck the wind is just obnoxious. Not a fan. I’ve had mine up to mid 70’s at not WOT and that was enough for my cheeks for a while lol. 50ish is good for me. Nice boat BTW
If ya have a good windshield to block the wind then great. Magic windshield’s are pretty worthless

I have not. I have measured the top of the transom assembly to the bottom of the swim step of one other and they were pretty close with the ol' finger scale. Other than that, I have talked to Shockwave about it. Unfortunately, Shockwave Custom Boats is their name, not so much "Performance" boats. LOL! I did talk with a guy on FB who said the drive spacer made a big improvement on his 28. The center pod creates some turbulent water, so you want to get under that.

I will be back out next weekend if you're interested in trying the Bravo 28p. I believe we will be launching down at Jack Smith so I can head down and meet you at Pirates.

What changed when you went from the bravo 28 to SL5? I currently have the bravo 28 and feel like it could be better.

To start, the slip number went from 20%+ to 13/14%. The mid-range pulls harder. I take it easy out of the hole, so both do well there but I'm sure the SL5 would best the Bravo if pushed. The slip is the biggest for me though. At cruising speed on up, the SL5 is more efficient everywhere.
