On Saturday, March 31st, Pirate Cove will be the host site of the 1st Water Ski Race on the River near Needles.

There will be two races. First race is from Pirate Cove to Needles and Back (About 20 miles total). The main event is from Pirate Cove to the Avi Resort and back (About 40 miles total).

Each Race will have the unique time trial format of 1 boat every 30 seconds so each boat will get sheet glass and the river to themselves. All boats will start at Pirate Cove, head down river for the first leg and stop.

Once all boats complete the first leg, all boats will head back to Pirate Cove one at at a time. Multiple classes so all levels, boat types can participate. Legendary US Ski Racer, former World Champion and 10 time Catalina Water Ski Race Winner Todd Haig is leading the efforts to make this race happen.

Ski Racing in the US needs a shot in the arm and a unique event like this is a great way to rejuvenate some interest in a great sport.

More info in the ski racing section on RDP and soon to follow on nwsra.net. Although I am not organizing this event, I want to see it succeed and hope that some RDP folks will come out and support it if nothing else. After party on Saturday night at Pirate Cove should be a great time with great people. Support the sport and support the Cove.

I'm stoked to see this happening! It will be interesting to be sure. Much more Aussie style.

Hardest part will be never knowing how you are doing, there is no "we've got 20 ropelengths, lets relax"

Is this a marathon or a mini-marathon? Im reading the rules and it looks like my boat would qualify. Maybe next year I can pull someone or even observe in my boat, don't think it will be done by March 31st this year.

Your 24' Schiada would definitely work. Technically the "Main Event" is like a marathon and the "Sprint Race" is like the mini marathon. However this event is completely unique so those terms are loosely used. Regardless, the intent is to run it under the NWSRA Marathon rules which allows up to 27' boats. Tell Rick at Islander to get your boat done! Otherwise, come have a beer so you can get an idea for next year.

I may have kissed his ass a little bit there, but they are the facts. The whole point is to get new/old blood back out there. Bring out the Baker Barry!

If your boat has a good turning radius I'll be your stiff!! Hahaa. You'll need the turning radius so you can pick me up about 100 times. Maybe they'll allow sit skis? Then we can really kick some ass.

Thank you Andy for posting this for us!!

I am glad to hear that everyone has positive feed back on this race. It is something new for us here in the states. The idea is to open it up for new, old, and present racers to come out and have bunch of fun. The smooth water should level the playing field for the boats and skiers. Its like djunkie said fuck it! bring your boat whatever you have in your garage grab your friends and load up the cooler, have some fun after the race we can drink some beers and tell some great stories about how much fun we had!! :drnkfr

Big thanks to Art and everyone at the Pirate Cove for hosting the event and supporting our sport!!

No worries, let me know if there's anything else I can do. So you did end up getting the AVI on board? Or are you just using that as a turn point?

Will we be able to run the river on the Friday before...and when will the markers be set on the low water areas? I have never been up there and talking all the underwater gear off pulling hte race does not sounds like fun.

Hey Lynch,

Hope all is well!

Our place is up river from Needles bridge and I know that water very well and run it in our Daytona. There are a number of areas of concern for a V Drive especially if water level is low which is norm for this time of year. I can review the areas with you prior and if you like we could run a GPS waypoint plot prior to race day. The run is clear to Needles bridge, upriver from the bridge has a number of areas of concern to Avi if you do not know the water that can do an fairly effective job at rearranging the underwater hardware....

Say hello to your dad from me, look forward to racing with him again this year in the CSR.

Dave we are just using them as a turn around point and people can stay there if they like but we dont have any rooms blocked. The Pirate Cove has really jumped in and helped out i would like to support them as much as possible.

John i am not sure when we will be able to mark the course but most likely not tell saturday morning. The river is open on friday for testing. If i am able i will run up there and show you the spots to look out for, or Don Johnson sound like he can help to.
