Does anyone have a recipe for pinto beans, to make them taste more like a restaurant's?
Out of the can with cheese doesn't quite do it for me.
Whatcha got?

Pinto beans, water, chicken and beef bouillon, cumin, oregano,1/2 a jalapeno, pinch of red pepper flakes salt and pepper 2 strips of bacon

Yes it is.
Works good on the smoker in a Dutch oven.

If you're starting with canned, Bush's pinto beans. Add Manteca. Or bacon fat. Or at least butter, not margarine. And cook it down from whole beans. Spice as desired, jalapeno, oregano and cumin at least.

I make mine in a pressure cooker with dry pinto beans......I don't usually smash them though but you could.

I also use chicken stock and not beef stock.

I just add spices like listed above with no measuring.....its like BBQ.....the more you do it the better you will get your taste down. Got to screw up a few batches first.....lol

One word Lard, makes them good, but not the best for you.

  • Recipe Instructions
    1. Begin by cleaning your beans.
    2. If cooking on the stovetop place in a small pot and cover with water.
    3. Season with salt, pepper, lard, and lemon.
    4. Cover and simmer on a low heat for at least 4 hours or until the beans are soft.

Fry up ½ pound of bacon cut up into ¾”-1” pieces, about halfway through add ½ onion chopped up, keep cooking then add 2 cloves of chopped garlic. Drain about ½ the bacon grease, add 1 - 40oz can or 3 - 16oz cans of Sun Vista pinto bean including the liquid, add a next size up from the small can of green chilies and a small can of chopped jalapeños (optional), a can of Rotel tomatoes and let simmer for about 10 minutes with the lid on. Finish off with a bunch of cilantro chopped and mixed in.

This is an excellent base for chili with leftover smoked meat.

Are you looking for a recipe for pinto beans, or refried beans?

I have made refried beans a couple times (once from dried beans, and once using the Sun Vista canned pinto beans). It has been a while, I will have to see if I can find the recipe. ]

In a pinch I heat up a can of Rosarita refried beans with a scoop of shortening (preferable in a cast iron skillet), a little sour cream, and a little onion powder. My kids love this simple recipe. You can also use lard or bacon grease.

Yes refried beans. We use Bushs pinto beans

The first thing you need to do is get a bag of Adobe Milling company beans. Midland beans are good also, just make sure they come from Dove Creek, CO. I like to make mine with green chili, I start off like Familyties' recipe and end like chili Palmer's.

The main thing I found that makes them taste authentic is Manteca lard in the beans and heated in a convection oven if possible before serving, that is a little easier than frying them in the lard.
