i dont know why, but i have started to get a little nervous with heights lately.

we were in san diego a year or so ago and as i was standing on the balcony looking out at the city, i started to bitch out a little. i felt anxious and nervous. it doesn't occur every single time, but lately it seems as if it is happening more.

but yet, i have no problems riding on ski lifts or in airplanes.

Nothing to be ashamed of,, it's your survival instinct.

Heights never bothered me. I was usually working on A/C units 100 feet above the floor with me upside down and backwards.

Heights don't bother me, but being suspended or on a bridge terrifies me.

A tall bridge or overpass renders me near paralyzed, yet I can lean out from a derrick board and latch drill pipe all day at 90' up.

I dont fear anything but spiders. Spiders because ive seen spiders the size of small nail head destroy flesh and ive seen spiders the size of my hand try and cuddle with its handler. The extreme spectrum is what gives me the willys. I hate walking through a spider web and not being able to locate the mother fucker that spun it. Ill feel it all day. Lol

I to am afraid of Heights to a certain degree. Not so much when I was younger. I enjoy flying but I'm not going rock climbing anytime soon.

It's an age thing... or at least I tell myself that. The older I get the more scared I am of heights. Never gave two shits about heights as a little kid. The only thing that ever scared me when I was little was a pretty hairy chair ride in Mammoth. Chair 10 or 23??? You go straight up and then drops off. My palms are sweating typing LOL

In my late 20's about near had a heart attack on a gondola in the swiss alps. First part went straight up. Like your staring straight at the mountain. I turned around 1 time and got dizzy. Suppose to go on another one across a crevasse. I went white. Sat the second part out and drank LOL

Flying. I hate it. Even a regular sized commercial plane freaks me out... I'm too stubborn to let it keep me from going anywhere though. In order to get to Tortola in a few weeks, we have to ride on a matchbook with wings. Not looking forward to that part at all. You can bet your ass I'll be consulting with my friend Sailor Jerry before we embark on that leg of the journey. Lol

Always been snakes, most recently though heights and short ledges have been an issue, might have been the fact that a camp counselor held me over the edge of the queen marry when I was a young kid.

I am afraid of heights as well. Unfortunately I find myself hanging off the side of towers, in crane baskets and what not all the time! Flying does not bother me in the least, I love flying small aircraft:thumbsup

I am scared of jumping out of or off of anything more than 10ft up. Walking across abridge with anything moving under it makes me question myself.
Ah hell you only can live once;)

I am afraid of heights too, but only if I have to lean over. I can't explain it. I have been on hot air ballons no problem, planes no problem, roller coasters no problem, but when I was at the Grand Canyon I looked over and had my date not grabbed me I was about to black out going forward. YIKES!!!!! :eek

I am also afraid of fish. Not sharks or anything. My fear is of goldfish and anything that resembles a goldfish. I had what I preceived as a traumatic experience in my childhood and completely blocked it out (mother kindly informed me). I want to scuba dive and I am afraid I will freak out and die.

However, as I get older I am more determined to just deal with my fears and say fuck it!

Single column supported high freeway overpasses for me......I don't do them (like the newer 15/10, 15/60). Exit before or after and find my way to the next freeway. Deal just started about 5 years or so ago. Dunno why..........don't care, I just don't.

I am petrified of flying. To the point where I think I need to be medicated.

I do not like heights...under certain circumstances. I am fine in a helicopter, but don't like my ladder, or even being on the roof.
I thought I was developing a fear of flying, what I think it really is is not being able to see and evaluate the pilot.
I see this as evidence I am trending towards a bit of a control freak as I grow older.

You would be surprised to find out that most SEALs are not "cool" with heights. Planes... no problem. Skydiving... no problem. Rappelling... no problem. But all of us get the fucking Heebie Jeebies on roofs with no ropes.

It is a well, WELL regarded fact that not even for hazing purposes do you ever "scare" someone near an edge with the traditional "BOO" grab combo. Probably mostly because we all have loaded weapons. Not many guys are cool with walking to the edge of a tall building and looking over. Rope in my hand? No problem. But unsupported creeps me out. Found out I was not alone.

It's so normal and bad with most that we keep a good eye on each other when doing work like this, like when you fast rope onto a roof top and have to set security. The vertigo can be intense... especially at night... even more especially on night vision.

I would not consider that "bitching out" in the slightest. That is self-preservation at work.

I am afraid of snakes and sharks.:thumbsdown...............I think we have both on the forums..:);), although I have no fear of jumping in the ocean with whales..go figure. I have a desire to swim with killer whales and other types....

My first job was installing fireplaces in new homes.
Day one training, this guy training me climbs up a 40' ladder with a sawzall, stands on top the chimney chase (aprox 2'x4') and cuts a round hole about 20" in diameter between his legs for the pipe to come through.
I thought this was insane!!!
Within a month, I was practically dancing on those chimney tops.
No big deal.
I quit that job after 6 yrs and moved on.
Fastforward 10 yrs, I got back into the Fireplace biz. Found myself on one that a 40' wouldn't reach. Had to crawl a roof valley of a 12/12 x 14/12 pitch roof to get to it.
I seriously thought I was gonna need the fire department or a helicopter to get me down.
After being away from it for a few years I was terrified.

I read an article the other day about pilots and the fear of heights. Many of the ones I know, including myself, don't like high places but love to go flying.

It's not that you have a fear of heights, you have an anxiety of edges. True Acrophobia means you couldn't even stand on a step stool.

So pilots in an airplane are not usually exposed to an "edge" so there isn't the fear of falling.

The human brain is an interesting place.

Sticking my hand in the mailbox before looking inside first.
Glass elevators that are hanging on the outside of the building. All others are fine with me.
Heights have become less enjoyable for me although flying is not an issue, in fact I'm that goofy kid with his face plastered to the window the :)whole flight.

O hell yes!!:eek

OR the sprinkler valve holes in the ground.

Of course, having Black Widows run across my hand in both instances probably caused that....so is that a fear of enclosures? or a fear of unknown inhabitants of enclosures?
