Believe there are other RDP inmates who also once lived in Downey. I know of about 10 people, who lived in Downey, which are now dealing or have passed with Parkinson’s Disease. Curious if others from or now living in Downey know people who’ve been diagnosed with PD? Fortunately, I am fine. But, I was very sorry to see the condition of my older brother over Thanksgiving. Hadn’t seen him in about 2 years. Good news is, he stays amazingly active. They’re headed to Kauai in January. Some experts say we’re just living longer. PD is typically found in the more senior. So, now we’re seeing more PD. I’ve never been one for conspiracies. But, the Downey connection with PD seems curious. FWIW - Of all my parent’s and grandparent’s friends, I can recall only one person with PD. My brother is the first in our family.

Don't know about Downey, but on my street, 10 homes backed up to flood control/ LA County property. In the late 70s and early 80s, they'd spray the slope with weed killer once or twice a year. Nothing ever grew there...still hasn't. Of those 10 homes, and the people that lived there at the time, 7 of those homes had people die of various cancers.

Pretty scary. May be bad luck, age, or environmental. No matter what, horrible.

My dad worked for North American Aviation / Rockwell Intl. in Downey for a long time. He does have moderate dementia. He was an engineer, not in production but I'm guessing they used some nasty chemicals in the 50's, 60's, 70's there.

… My father was a manufacturing engineer at Lockheed Aircraft from 1938 until it was discovered that he had Parkinson’s … My mother thinks he got it from using his Hudson sprayer on a regular basis to kill ants… I don’t think so. There were so many chemicals used in the production of aircraft and him having to walk down into production … At a minimum…probably a contributing factor… He lived with Parkinsons for 38 years… A brutal disease… I would not wish it on anybody… 🤷🏽‍♀️

Lived in Downey my first 31 years, went to Spencer Williams, West, and Warren, class of 92. Always meeting peeps from Downey over the years. First I’ve heard of. Any specific area
No specific Downey area. The PD individuals I’m aware of were from various DHS classes way back in the 60’s. And they are all now 70 plus. Again, age may be the major contributing factor. But, throughout my life I’ve known many in their 70’s and plus. PD didn’t seem to be common at all among them.

Might they be taking anti-depressants?

Abilify and Rexulti, and there may be others, are dopamine inhibitors that can cause Tardive Dyskinesia, which is essentially a form of Parkinson’s. I know two people who had to stop taking these drugs due to developing symptoms but did recover, one who exhibits mild symptoms but doesn’t seem to be worsening, and another who has developed it full-on with electrodes implanted in her brain to manage the symptoms (along with drugs every couple of hours).

those are mood stabilizers not anti-depressants

I think they get mixed up a lot, as it seems they prescribe one with the other. That, and all the damn TV ads that just show people sad, then smiling...followed by all the possible side effects.

You're putting a pretty fine point on it. While they may not technically be anti-depressants, they are used to treat depression.

The statements below are from the manufacturers’ websites.
********
REXULTI works with your antidepressant to help build on the progress you've already made.

When taken with an antidepressant,* REXULTI was proven to significantly reduce depression symptoms more than the antidepressant alone. So you may feel better—without feeling like you have to start over.

*REXULTI is for people who have been on an antidepressant for at least 2 months and are still experiencing symptoms of depression.
**********

What is ABILIFY for?

  • Use as an add-on treatment for adults with Major Depressive Disorder when an antidepressant alone is not enough

Dogs also running thru drainage barrancas. Dogs enjoy, but barranca water is loaded with fertilizer and weed abatement.

True, but still. They have pretty heavy side effects compared to anti-depressants, that's why it's good to differentiate between the two. Abilify and Rexulti are commonly known as anti-psychotics, which demonstrates the seriousness of these medications.

Side effects read at 5x times speed as rest of the commercial of course lol

In early 2020 my wife at the age of 59 was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. It had really started around as far as she could tell in mid 2019 but really not knowing what was wrong with her. She has severe fatigue and body pain along with the occasional right hand shaking but it has worsened over time or sometimes more frequent. She had been seeing her Neurologist and he sent her to Stanford. They ran a DAT scan on her that did come out negative, but the in house testing proved to them to be the diagnosis of Parkinson’s. She was a financial controller for over 30 years and had to be retired that was very difficult to overcome. She takes a medication called Centement with an extended version at night which is helping a lot.

She is still driving and running errands but has to space things out. She is a very positive person and the power of her mind goes a long way. We feel blessed, and monkeyswrench if you are reading this I appreciate you and the talk we had a couple of days ago. Kinda like we said we all have something going on in our lives and I’m now just getting to the point where I can share a little with RDP.

I am also from Downey. Havent heard of anyone with Parkinson's. Was always concerned with the power lines that ran next to the riverbed that were know to be cancer clusters. I have had some friends die at a young age who lived under or near them. I grew up on the island.

My grand parents lived in Downey from early 1930's to early 90's. 1 set around corner from WHS ( pruess ave.) The others in N. Downey ( richeon ave.) My N. Downey grandfather died of Parkinsons around 1988. My parents graduated from DHS in 1954 & 58 respectively. We moved from Downey in 1977. Neither of them had Parkinsons. It sucked seeing my grandfather basically shrivel up from the disease.

I was born in Downey. At that time Downey Community Hospital was a converted 5 bedroom house on 3rd street. Lived there most of my life although I did move away a few times I always seem to find my back. I grew up on Alameda st. just about 1/4 mile away from North American aviation. and in later years we lived next to Rancho Los Amigos so one end of town to the other. Back in the 70's I owned the Shell station on the corner of Old River and Imperial Hwy. Downey was a defense community with North American, General Kinetics, General Dynamics, B.F. Goodrich aviation and a few other smaller defense contractors so it wouldn't surprise me if there were a link to long term exposure to all the chemicals used in the manufacturing processes. That being said , no one I know or grew up with has Parkinson's.

Not PD related but, anyone remember the little window that you could watch the bakery department bake cakes at Beach’s market?

My Uncle who lives in Cerritos has PD. He is 80. He was diagnosed approx 8 years ago, maybe 10.

My grandparents owned a chain of flowers shops……… Headquartered out of Downey. “Fitzgeralds Flowers.“ Florence & Can’t Remember Cross Street.

My Uncle went to a Private Catholic High School somewhere near Inglewood. He graduated either 63 or 64. Then went to USC.

I hope this helps. I can find out more specific details if needed.

Of course I remember that. Actually I remember Beach’s from when it was an open air “farmers market “ on the corner.
Our Mom used to refer to that open air farmers type market, prior to Beach’s as “the dirty market”. But she continued to shop there. Usually for fruits and vegetables. We lived in NE Downey, but she’d somehow find her way clear down to that market in the SW corner of Downey. We lived in Downey from 1954 to 1970. Actually ran across a guy on FB who lived in our home longer than I did. His parents bought it after my parents sold it in 1970. On Zillow the house still looks great. Large pool, with a diving board, in the backyard, looks totally the same today - 50 years later. Keeping that pool clean was my job. My parents had the home custom built in 1954. Great place to grow up.

FWIW - My older brother was DHS class of 1960. Tonight he and 17 of his HS buddies and their wives are getting together in La Quinta CA.
