2001 Johnson 90 hp, starts and runs great. After sitting for more than 10 min, it is hard to re-start, especially if it has been trimmed up. I have to pump up the fuel bulb and then the engine starts fine, but then runs out of fuel and dies. Gotta do this 2-3 times, then it runs great again. Where do I start looking?

I would check all your o rings on the fuel system. Make sure you don't have a vaccum leak or air leak.

Then I would check your VRO pump. Its on the side of the block that has a oil line and gas line going to it. Its black about the size of your fist.

I believe you can do a vaccum check and see if the diaphram is hoding. got a manual?? It should say something about the VRO in it..

Cheep Fix

There should be like an inline filter under the engine cowl. Try cleaning/replacing that.

Also I do believe there is a metal screen/filter clogs easily, locate, remove, clean, replace.

Definately sounds like a problem... I think you should sell the motor to me at a severely discounted rate for Bubbles II.. :D

How heavy is it?

if it was me, I'd ditch the fuel bulb routine, and put a small fuel pump in it with a fuel pressure regulator..

I put a cheap 'o pep boys special fuel pump on my boat last year to eliminate MOST of the need for the bulb (the bulb still flows more so its nice to have for the first trip of the weekend). Definitely worth the $15 and I dont think you really need a pressure regulator on those small ones. At least I dont have one and I dont have a problem at all. And no, I have not blown my diaphragm fuel pump. I know cause the electric one stopped working on me last year on the middle of the lake and the boat ran fine without it! lol

Air leak does sound likely. The 25hp merc on our fishing boat had very similar issues a couple summers ago.....turned out that the needle would stick intermittently and cause it. So that might be something to look into if that 2001 still uses carbs. I finally figured out what it was after stomping on the primer bulb a couple times out of frustration:eek::hmm
