Apparently, inflation, fuel cost and that spoiled bitch from Europe have jacked the costs. It looks like the cost of pellets has jumped nearly 2$ a bag. Still far cheaper for heat for us than anything else, electric would be insane, and propane isn't any better.

If it's real cold, a bag a day will keep us about 70. If it's in the 30's or 40's, a bag will last two days. Usually I go into winter with 10 or 20 bags stockpiled from last year. This year I didn't :(

I usually buy a pallet, and probably will in a week or so.

If you have a woodworker around you you could go get his sawdust and make your own.

My parents have two pellet insert fire places in the their house and they are awesome. I want to put them in my house (insert style) but I just can’t find any that look nice. I did find a few that look clean and modern, but they are only available in Europe.

Btw the pellet stoves went up in price way more than the pellets have. It’s crazy how much the want for them installed now.

I had an old Jotul wood stove before. At the time, I was traveling a bit, and would have to load a rack on the porch for my wife on weekends I was gone. I'd cut and split the wood in fall for the winter. The pellet stove was a used one off CL for cheap...200$ and had to move it. Well, hurt like hell moving and installing, but it works really well. My parents had a wood burning insert in their home in Cali. It also worked great. I don't know if you can wire one of those with a thermostat to cut the fan though?

yes, it can be wired with a thermostat. just a matter of type of switch and then matching relay(s) and of course the wiring.

I have been contemplating installing a Pellet stove in the rental We are in until our house is built. The heater sucks and I have never lived in a trailer before and this Doublewide is freaking freezing 🥶 yes seems like that would be the best option and I don’t imagine installation is too difficult?

I don't know about permits, but the piping and setback distances are pretty basic. The pipe I think is a 4" outer, double wall. Some people go directly out the wall, and do their vertical outside. I ran mine through the existing chimney.

We sell a lot of pellets at our store and yes they have gone up $2.00. Also to be noted is that we are getting word of a supply shortage of pellets this year, so best to stock up early. This shortage doesn't just apply to CA, this will be nation wide and we are already being reduced on the amount of pellets we can order at a time.

He could do it in his spare time.🤣
Switching thermostats are on eBay and they’re very cheap. I used them in my old house in Santa Clarita that had a wall furnace. I had the sensor on the furnace set to go on at about 85° then that turned on the fan to move the air around the room.

Thanks Biden!
I don’t think it’s Biden.

High electricity prices in Europe last year due to French nuclear reactors not running in combination with more expensive natural gas due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine made people switch to wood and pellets.

Talking America! Biden and his administration doesn’t want anything but electric vehicles and appliances for his new green deal. Only problem is we don’t generate enough electricity now and will only get worse with more regulations. No coal, no natural gas, no heating oil and no wood burning fireplaces ! Like I said, thanks Biden! Democrats, incompetent, liars, failed and ineffective!

I have 2 of them in our house. One freestanding and one insert. And yes the cost has gone up but.. it's TRUE heat! Electric heat sucks imo!

We buy pellets from a local manufacturer so it's not as bad but still has increased.

The venting is the same as a "B-vent" for a gas hot water heater.

And the brand of pellets you buy has a huge difference in how much heat the put out!

They have actually been around for quite some time. I remember a couple friend's that live in the mountains back in the 70's that had them for heat.

Way before Traeger figured out to sell over priced BBQ's to yuppies to over dry meat and tell their yuppie friends they are now a pit boss master. ;)

I think my stove is a 2008 or so. It has a power button, fan speed and heat buttons. It has a jumper/connection to wire a millivolt style thermostat. No remote, but it's pushbutton start and will shutdown and restart with a thermostat...much easier than the wood stove.

We have a wood insert. When we bought the house I thought the fan was burnt out. We never used the insert. We have a huge fireplace more centrally located that we used. Last year we did a little fireplace wall redo around the insert and while the wall was torn apart i started testing switches and the fan. All seemed good. Sure enough. The fan only kicks on at a certain temp and turns off at a set temp. I had never seen that. Really stumped me.
It's nice that the fan kicks off in the night/early morning when my fire dies out.

I would generally agree with that statement.

However, Biden is not to blame for the power prices in Europe last winter sucking the global pellet market dry.

It was the result of nearly all nuclear power plants in France having to do urgent maintenance at the same time, only one American company being certified to do the welding, France turning from the world's biggest electricity exporter to an importer, power prices shooting through the roof all across Europe and people switching from using electricity to burning wood and pellets to heat their homes.

In Sweden, you could see people in the country side who had had been trying to peddle firewood for years with no success. In a matter of weeks, it was all sold.

Wood pellets are traded globally. A friend used to own a business that owned forests in Florida and produced pellets to sell to municipal heating plants in Sweden.

Tractor supply seams to always have plenty of pellets. Here it is 6.79 for 40lb. For the smoker I just paid 10.99 for 40lb.

TSC, CaL Ranch, Home Depot and Costco are all within a nickle out here. Per bag or per pallet 😔
Pellet cartel setting the prices.

Just stopped and bought 10 bags for $60. They are cheaper by the ton but was driving the jeep. Asked the guy about this shortage I read about(in this thread) and he just laughed. They wont ship overseas and really only sale local. Best pellets I have used!

Im still waiting for the food shortage that was supposed to happen last year 😁.

What is the difference between heating pellets and smoking pellets? anything?

Interesting. We have been burning the North Idaho Energy Logs for a couple years now, because I don't want to cut down any more oaks on the property. I have a few down, son is taking as he has time. Anyway the fuel logs went up 10 bucks for a full pallet, which weighs right at 2k lbs.
We buy a cord of softwood every other year to get the stove going and then add the energy logs.
Clean burning, more btu's than oak, we love 'em.

Smoking pellets will be from cherry, maple, mesquite etc etc for the flavor and expensive. Pellets for heat can be whatever is swept off the floor or better and likely not to leave a good taste in your food. Who knows, you might like it?????

Just material used. The plant that makes these is about 25mi from me. It actually used to be a treager pellet manufacturer(I believe the first one actually). And when treager started outsourcing, a guy bought it to make heating pellets.

So if you want to smoke something with Douglas Fir then, no different from the smoking pellets. It's just ground up wood soaked and ran through a pellet die and ran through a dryer.

Bought a few bag of these last week to get me though cause most places were closed. Junk! Really dusty, blacked out my glass and the heat sucked! I knew as soon as I seen the print on them about California they were junk!

I disagree. It is my opinion that Biden is absolutely to blame for the power shortage in Europe. Our weak president invited Putin to invade Ukraine. I also believe that our .gov blew up the Nordstream II Pipeline. If that is related to the price of pellets? I don't know. I don't know how many Europeans use pellets, or have replaced their furnaces with pellet-burning devices.

I'm only moderately interested in the subject because my man bought me a pellet patio heater for Christmas. I can't wait to fire it up! 90K BTUs and made in the USA.
