I am new to this forum and my wife and I are looking to buy our first boat.

trying to stay around or under 5000. we do have a couple of dirt bikes we could trade or sale.

A great friend of ours has given us some advice.
(so Rivermobster STFU :D)

We would like to hear more....

Open Bow Pros and Cons
closed bow Pros and Cons
Jet vs not

Also if you have or know of a boat that would be good for beginners post it please.

Thanks,
Dan

All those questions can be answered better if we know where you want to boat, if you have kids to bring along and if speed is more or less important

Also, your boating experiences... have you ridden in boats you really liked? Disliked?:thumbsup:thumbsdown

Show up here in Havasu or Parker or wherever and ride in a bunch of different boat types if you do not have alot of time on the water:thumbsup

Welcome to boating, it is a great sport with a lot of great people.

My personal choice for a first boat would be an outboard, reasons-ease of use, ease of maintence and more space in the boat. Drawbacks would be it will not ride as nice as an IO (but better than a jet boat) and many lakes and waterways have banned or are planning to ban all 2 strokes so you would need to go 4 stroke so there goes the ease of maintence and it will cost more.

As a newby I would stay away from a jet unless you have someone with experience driving a jet boat who can teach you. They can be a bit tricky in emergency situations and they also do not ride near as good as a comparable IO or Outboard.

An IO would be a good all around boat, the engine taking up space in the boat and dealing with oil changes and other maintence are the only negatives I can think of. Can't think of any negatives about a bow rider, they provide more space inside the boat and make getting on and off the boat easier.

I am sure that I have missed a number of things and not all will agree with me, this is just my opinion.

Clean choice also......... Like I said though, he need to get closer to 7K. Not sure if this would be a good choice as well for a first time boater since it is a v-drive. With a budget of 5K, he's looking at probably an 18' jet, unless it's older or he wants a production boat (Baylinerish).

I didn't know if jets were a go or not lol

I paid $4K for my first boat, got it at the end of last summer.
It's a 21-foot Tahiti, 260-hp Volvo-Penta I/O.
Small block - fuel sipper :thumbsup

I couldn't afford more at the time, but I'm glad I went this route.
It was a dirty POS, but a little elbow grease and now...it looks like a clean POS :D

I'll make my stupid rookie mistakes with this boat.
Absolute worst case scenario, I take a loss on the boat and I'm out $4K. Which is about half the cost of a propeller on some of the nicer boats out there :p

As long as the boat floats and runs, I should be able to sell it for about what I paid for it.

My suggestion.

Look at bayliner boats in the 19-21 foot range with a v-6. They are in your price range, and make great boats for a new to boating family. Have fun for a couple of years exploring, skiing, campng, damaging, and then sell it, hoping you'll get most of your money back (minus expenses and repairs). http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/boa/2427514103.html

If you still like boating, you'll know what you want, and what you can afford. Make your second boat count.

Thats a great suggestion too. Dan lives in Oceanside, and could drop a Bayliner in the big blue as well.

Isnt Lake Martinez a lot closer to SD??

I also suggest to use care in choosing the colors of your accessories.

And DO NOT tow with the cover on!! or by the 210, or wrapped...and I'm sure I'm forgetting something else.:D
To be perfectly honest get the best boat that your budget can afford and what works best for YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!! I found mine for a great price used it as is for the first season then had the interior redone and I LOVE MY BOAT!! Works very well for me and my family and that's what counts. :thumbsup

Open bow - more room and the ability to shift weight to the front of the boat.
Closed bow - looks cooler and the ability to stay behind the windshield if its cold.

Deep V will ride smother, Cat. or Trihull will be more stable but can be harder to load on a trailer.

I would stay with a prop to start with as a jet has to be pushing water to steer. Outboard or in/out will work as a rudder.

Get a cheap boat to learn on and go out and have fun, anyone who doesn't want to play with you because you don't have a fancy boat you dont need around.

Hey so...

Dan found a boat in Carslbad. Are there any reputable shops there that can inspect it for him, and not charge and arm and a leg??

Thanks in advance for the help!

My .02 and maybe a little late. I have always had jets- my parents had I/O, jet and Hydro(not for the family!) After my recent equipment failure (BNAG) My family and I who love our Advantage 21 SRBR JET (yeah I know a little big for a jet- shut-up) The open bow is nice, the boat is deep enough inside that my kids don't slip over or anything stupid. Now we are using my friends 23 Chapparal- I have to say "wow'' a little old guy feeling but awsome for the fam, fuel sipper, TONS of storage for kid fodder, and a place for everything! plus the I/o is big blue friendly.
