I flew down Saturday to attend the Race World Offshore Clearwater race and had planned to stay over for the IBEX show Tuesday, but received an email during the races about 1 PM that due to the governor declaring a state of emergency that they felt they should cancel.

Changed flight to this morning and heading to airport in a half hour.

I was told everything was already set up. What a disappointment and effort on their part.
For those that aren’t familiar, IBEX is the largest US boat industry trade show, 2nd only to METS in Amsterdam. We exhibit every year. Our reps landed in Tampa 10 minutes after the cancellation announcement 🤦‍♂️

I had the pleasure of breaking the news to our team 👎

Many companies spend 6 figures or more on these shows. There are a LOT of pissed off people throughout the boating industry this week but what are you gonna do 🤷

Yes, several larger booth displays had been setup. Thankfully we planned to setup yesterday so our materials are still crated but since they had to evacuate the hall, current status is unknown. Will sort that out in the days to come.

I believe our reps made it home yesterday but it took a LOT of logistics due to lack of flights & rental cars.

Many thousands spent on displays, freight, material handling fees, travel, etc. down the drain but it’s only money and these are all minor problems compared to those who’s homes, lives & businesses are at risk. Hoping for the best!

Still better than Surf Expo show in Orlando about 5 years ago that got cancelled midway through day 1. What a mess! That’s a whole other story best shared over a beer…

Driveway?
I live in a luxury highrise Condo building. There is no way whatsoever I could bring my trailered boat here. It’s not an option even if I didnt care about the rules.

We got 25 gallons of water (already have the bottles and used our filtered water), full gas tanks, 34 bags of pasta (i bought waaay before this), propane, and the grill. Trees are trimmed, boat seat bottoms and batteries out of the boat, outdoor furniture stored, and the MBZ has a indoor home.

Not going to board up, I think that's overkill. But I think we're as ready as we're going to be.
@941Punk You should send me an unedited copy of your signature picture just in case something happens to your computer.

Always baffles me with people that knowingly live in areas where it’s somewhat common for natural events like hurricanes/tornadoes even earthquakes and not have some sort of 5 gal water stock pile. We live in So.Cal and always have 5-5 gal water barrels that we rotate around. Also have food rations incase we get that “Big One”
I guess it’s easier to just hit that panic button! Lol 😂

No shit... Blows my mind.

I wasn't even that "Stocked up" before covid and i still never ran out of or needed anything. Guess it's just how i grew up 🤷

My sister has a place in Ft. Myers, she isn’t there yet fortunately. Her house is not on the water but it isn’t too far away. I don’t think it will matter, they are calling for 9 feet of storm surge. She told me there is a couple there that are in the early 80’s, on the bay and aren’t leaving. Why anyone would stay is beyond me. I told her I hope they have a 2 story house.

Some people stay because they don't have any other options. Some stay because everything they own is in their home, and they fear losing it if they aren't around to "Keep an eye on things." Looting AFTER a storm is always a huge problem, and many people feel that they can protect their belongings if they are actually there in their home. Some have elderly family members, people in need who can't move, livestock, pets, etc. There are a TON of reasons why people stay. We ALWAYS stayed and never evacuated once. Have you seen the images of people trying to leave and evacuate?? Many are now stranded on a roadway with traffic worse than any Friday afternoon L.A. commute. So, for those who waited til the last minute, they may be stuck and aren't able to leave.

This is the absolute truth above.

I’d rather ride it out at home than on the highway. There’s only 2 highways heading north with millions fleeing. Looting is always a major problem. However, the water would have to rise a hundred feet to get in my living room. So it’s easier for me to make the decision to stay.

We lived in Cape Coral for hurricane Irma that happened in 2017 and that idiot from the Weather Channel had my wife so up in arms. !5 foot storm surge (we were on a canal) and they were measuring the that from the top of the mailboxes. Which by the way is supposed to be measured from street level. Man all he did was fan the flames of sensationalism. I'm all for being prepared but damn so many broadcasters just go for that doom and gloom to keep people glued.
Hoping she doesn't get the tides as they are calling for.

They aren’t supposed to be there for the winter until next week…must be nice to have a sales job with a home office. Lol

I just don’t understand someone in their 80’s staying in the path of this. The houses on the water in this community are a couple million dollars I would have left a week ago and came back when it was all over Is all. It isn’t worth my life…that all I am trying to say.

At 51, my current age, I think it would be fun to ride it out.

Maybe peeps at that age just feel like what diff does it make. They have lived a good life and just believe things will be what they will be?

I wouldnt have stuck around personally

I will say this much. I've been through several and while they aren't "Fun," they are memorable. I still remember being a kid at my Aunt's Key West house, with no power, watching water rise up through the hardwood floors. Like I said, memorable. That house is still there today. 🤣

I am getting ready to go out and do emergency repair on neighbors boat.

Look at pic. Rear whip line has snapped.

Stay safe, wear a life vest not a bad idea me thinks!

Those whip lines don't seem like a very useful idea in any significant storm. Would it have made sense to drop a few anchors off the starboard side with a huge scope, as a backup?

It keeps coming and going. We have tornado watch till 5pm. Every 20minutes or so,we get white caps down the intracoastal.

Right now it’s not so bad. It looks as though the tide has gone down a little bit.

Compared to what I am watching on news, I feel lucky.

Wait until Social Security checks drop tomorrow, and there’s nothing to buy. Or the rent is due, but you have no roof.

Amazon delivery will be tested.

Can not imagine how long it is going to take to clean up and rebuild. Florida was having home insurance problems before this storm.

We lived in FL for about a year, West Palm, and really liked it. Mostly good people and mostly good weather. But, It was our introduction to real Snowbirds. Unlike the Havasu breed, these birds appeared to not drive at all when at home, up north. But, they all seemed willing to give it a shot when in FL. Beyond crazy.

BTW - Having grown up in So Cal, I thought I was familiar with wealth, Brentwood, Beverly Hills etc. But, Palm Beach has the real deal, the Old Money. . . . The Singers, Reynolds’s, Pulitzers etc. The Kennedy compound looked like the low rent area. Nice yachts? It advanced from how nice was your shore boat, to what was your helicopter, to how nice was your mini submarine.

They've always had insurance problems. My parents had to file a claim for damage to one of their properties, and they didn't see any money for over two years. They essentially remodeled a home "Out of pocket" and waited for the insurance company to figure it all out.
