The only thing you have done by buying offshore is filled your pockets with more profit and loaded this country full of Chinese junk . Did you lower your prices when your labor costs went way down ? Fuck no you filled your pockets . Just like the auto makers that went to Canada and Mexico . Did cars become cheaper ? Not one fuckin penny . Now the market has changed . Time to adjust . Either move manufacturing back to the U.S. or pay the tariffs . You guys are the business geniuses , figure it out .
By offshoring Americans get goods and services at a fraction of the cost they could get them if they were limited to only domestically produced goods or services.

It has raised the average Americans standard of living considerably. That is a mathematical fact.

But if some don’t want that, so be it.

The only way I can see to change status quo is to put a libertarian in office, but there arent any.

MAGA is changing the R party from a Uni-Party establishment, to a party of the working people. There's still a bunch of RINO's who tout the R label, but they are becoming fewer and fewer. THAT is your best option and if the American people can stomach what is needed to right this sinking ship, we will succeed.

It's amazing to me the quality of products people accept . The stuff we are importing is junk . One out of every 3 you take out of the box doesn't work . The shit that does work won't last one year . If you are old enough you remember in the 60's and 70's if you went to an auto parts store for an alternator you got a delco remy . The same one the auto maker used . Not some rebuilt shit copy from China . It sure would be nice to buy quality products again .

And made us dependent on dog eating communists who are hell bent on owning us.

Convenient how you ALWAYS leave that out. 🤣

When you started offshoreing did you lower your price to a fraction of the cost to pass it on to the consumer . Like fuck you did . You did nothing but start selling junk and making more profit . Well the jigs up . Find another way to rip people off . You fuckin milked this tit dry .

I dont see the other side, I dont see the "build here" part along with the tariff part.
I hear words, I see no structure, and even if there were one why would I trust its worth the paper and ink its on?

I cant see how the money they already took is benefitting my employees or anyone I know.
Where'd the billions they already took go?

GM and Ford made investments elsewhere based on both party's agreeing and now that deal has been broken.
The deal had room for a breakup, but even that got usurped. Both guys did this and Trump took the lead on it with USMCA, Biden kept it going - classic uniparty (just like the subprime crisis)

As an investor Im caught up in political BS that is simply not bankable anymore.

These guys arent it either, if they are they need to show me and stop telling me.
The right's too far out.
We need to get back to the middle.

So what’s the next best option?

This is the big problem.
The really good people in the US dont want the job.
I was sitting with a couple of 9 figure guys talking about this a bit ago, none would take on the gig.

Yes we did as did many others. That is why people have such a higher standard of living today.

Remember the mobile phone, 10,000 dollars in 1979. Now you can get it for free with a one year contract.

Remember how expensive tools were, now you can go into business for yourself as an auto mechanic for less than a thousand bucks.

Remember how expensive those first US made PC’s were, and now they have a million times the computing power for a fraction of the cost.

There are millions of examples.

Those are the benefits of global commerce, of trade, of economic cooperation as opposed to economic conflict.

Fuck for nine figures I'll give it a go . In 2 years when I fuck it all up you buy me out of the rest of my contract and I'll go away so you can try the next guy . Isn't that how these big money guys do it ?

A higher standard of living ? Have you fuckin looked around ? Cars are starting on fire , people are starting on fire on the subway , people are getting raped and robbed and kids and women can't walk alone . Gee , thanks for the upgrade . Holy fuck , I'd hate to see your idea of a downturn .

LOL

So you think tariffs on Canada and Mexico will lower crime and reduce the number of cars that catch on fire?

Maybe tariffs can stop aviation accidents too? 😂

We are doomed……….

Employing less American workers and sending money to foreign countries is better, got it!

More Americans are employed today than at any previous time at record wages. That is better.
Oh , you mean the 20 dollars an hour to hand me a big mac that I order at the kiosk ? Ya , things are better .

Tough to do when you're constantly changing policy every 4-8 years for sure, but that's the price you pay to live in the good ol USA.

Once again, until the voters pull their head's out of their asses, the future is bleak for some in business, but the good news, they did this cycle. 😝

I'm not a fan of the tariffs and I don't think they'll solve much as far as bringing production back here....they may have some affect as a political tool to get Mexico and Canada to change their policies, but that's about it.

Like Uncle Dave mentioned, You can't just flip a switch and start manufacturing here tomorrow. It's a process and requires a huge investment, if it's even possible with all the regulations. While it might make sense to do that under the current climate, what happens in 4 years (or 2) when all the rules might change again? These companies that just spent millions or billions building factories and tooling up might have to lock the doors and head back to their offshore suppliers again to survive with nothing to show for their investment.

I'm not smart enough to know what the solution is, just barely smart enough to understand that things are a lot more complex than they appear to be on the surface....and people need to think through ALL the layers instead of just the top one or 2 or 3, which it doesn't appear they've been doing for a very long time.

BTW, I import parts from Canada and also export parts to Canada and will be subject to these tariffs. I'm less concerned with that fact than I am with how I'm supposed to pay them. Is this going to be another tax filing headache I need to deal with? If so, I'll just stop selling to Canada all together....but I don't really have a choice on the importing.

Well, the Tariffs were put in place partially as a tool to get these 2 nations to put some effort into controlling their boarders....right? If criminals have been coming in illegally, and there is a decrease of that moving forward due to the leverage of the tariffs, then yes, it absolutely should reduce crime. If our tax dollars are not going towards funding social programs for illegals that don't pay into the system, then it absolutely should lower some costs to the taxpayer.

Just got an email offering me these stickers. It would appear markets remain efficient despite new tariffs……..

Can’t wait to see them at gas pumps.

From Victor David Hanson,

No longer is there a national debate over the evils of “protectionism” and “nationalism,” but rather over how quickly and effectively can the U.S. return the manufacturing of key medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, strategically vital technologies, and rare earth metals to American shores. Offshoring and outsourcing are now more likely synonymous with tragedy than smart investment strategies.

A little long but the tariffs are basically a response to the lack of immigration policies in Canada and Mexico. 350 immigrants on terror watch lists have been stopped coming in to the USA via Canada versus 150 from Mexico.

Really? Let’s look at the results from his last term.

In 2016, just before Trump took office, the total goods and services deficit was $480bn, around 2.5% of US GDP. By 2020, it had grown to $653bn, around 3% of GDP, despite his tariffs. It continued to grow under his tariffs that the liberals kept in place and expanded further.

It will be easy to measure once again. As will GDP once his tariffs are fully implemented.

He ran on lowering the price of everyday items and lowering inflation. Time will tell.

Tarrifs like these have nothing to do with generation of government revenue, that's just a by-product.

Your first sentence nails it. They are a tool to leverage policy outcomes beneficial to the US...

First order thinkers can't see past "hurrr durr mor taxes"

All of this is blatant, and been explained ad nasueum but they just keep coming back with the same tired and incompetent arguments because "Trump bad"

You need to look no further than the last 4 decades of manufacturing decline, all of which is the result of short sighted "get rich quick" mentality by people like 530, both in the government and business world, that has taken the US from the Pinnacle of manufacturing durables, with a thriving and productive economy, to a consumer driven service economy where we have gutted technical skills from entire generations and sent all the money in the piggy banks overseas to build their economies, and train their populations in technical crafts. Fucking brilliant strategy for the future oriented.

How so, the importer pays a tariff to the Feds. The gov gets the money.

Has to start somewhere. This is a good place.

If you have to buy things only made elsewhere, what are you doing to fix this in the US, now? Arguing on an internet forum?

Thats one way to look at it. Break before make.

I prefer make before break when it comes to business continuity. Build it up then put on a tariff when I have a choice.

Im talking to guys I've known a long time now about my manufacturing business, looking for some discussion, but dont really want to argue but have a more nuanced discussion.

What Am I doing to fix this in the US NOW- employing 188 people in the television and film equipment business in Grass Valley California.

There is no solution to current economic problem that won't hurt....bad. We can tax the citizens, through income tax, property tax, etc....or we can impose import tariffs. The difference is, income tax, property tax, etc...has no effect on other nations.....trade tariffs do.

Given the debt, the .gov needs more revenue to pay it down....gaining that revenue from hurting ONLY our citizens is one way to do it, or the citizens can feel the same level of hurt while also gaining significant leverage over some of our international trading partners to get them to do what we want. That's why tariffs are better in that respect.

The .gov gets the money either way, and the importer / tax payers pay the money either way....but with a tariff the pain is more widely distributed so the end result is greater. It's not about the money....they'll get that either way...it's about the leverage.

To your point.

Let’s say I am a small manufacturer with 200 employees that manufactures in the USA. Half my sales are international, half are US.

Retaliatory tariffs are put in place so that now half my revenue have tariffs, volume goes down, my fixed costs are eating me. What do I do?

In order to survive, I shut my US manufacturing down as well as some engineering and I go to a contract manufacturer and engineering who has plants in localities so that the tariffs do not apply.

It's looking the like the answer is to move the manufacturing proportionally to the Geo you sell in.
Instead of shutting it down you porportionlaize it.
If Im 50/ 25/25 go build non export business locally that ratio to maintain that local market share unmolested by outside geos (mostly)

Be better, provide a better product and level of service and charge a premium, then a 25% addition to costs is merely a drop in the bucket. If a fucktard like me can do it, surely a scholar like you can do it. Don't sell commodity grade shit, be innovative and do better.

This is from a group of socialist democRATS with the intention of promoting Buy Canadian to help Canada while screwing themselves and their country.

Morons on so many levels. Just cannot even imagine being so flipping dumb.
