So, my trip is off to 100% shit start.

I'm in Havasu and I'm pretty sure my starter took a dump.

Anyone know of a good shop to call first thing in the morning or a good mobile guy?

Some crap would have to be removed to get at it.

Looks like it’s in a garage... why not wrench on it yourself ?

I'll try the hammer gig.

I think the bindex is stripped.
I think.

I could wrench but I'm on vacation and would rather pay someone.
But if my back's against the wall I could give a whirl.

I'll try the guys that have been mentioned so far.

Damn, I just got home last night. Otherwise I'd have packed a jump bag and rolled down....

BTW, Two years I rolled up to my place and the main breaker had taken a dump...That was a shit start to a trip. Slept on my boat, and learned how to replace a hot breaker the next morning, and my God, a fridge in river heat stinks something fierce after a few days with no power....🤮

It's all good.
Thank you tho.

I'm just going to start calling places tomorrow at 8am.
And see if someone can fit it in.

Shit happens.

Throw a comforter over the splash guard, remove the header and knock it out. Take you about 4 hrs start to finish. The most difficult thing is holding the new starter in place and starting the inner mount bolt. If you have a air ratchet avail that will help significantly.

Just a fyi mini /gear reduction starters use a permanent magnet for outside poles and by hitting them with a hammer it will brake the magnets.

Looks like it will be a pretty straight forward swap sense your bell housing is notched out already. My old BBC jet had the same setup and I had to grind down the nose cone to get it to clear which was a pain.

4 hours to remove 10 bolts?!?!

Are we talking a beer after every bolt? :p 😄

That's maybe 30 minutes of work, assuming he has a proper aluminium gasket in there.....

Don't forget to disconnect the power first lol....;)

Ya clownie...4 hrs to r&r the header:oops::rolleyes:😃

Having a little trouble with reading comprehension today?

I was addressing the total time to swap out a starter. They can b a real pain in the ass to re-install when having to twist and reach around blind in there especially being as heavy as they r. The hull being a tunnel prolly doesn't help any either. An alum. gasket should b re-useable, thatxs one of their benefits.

There was somebody that used a mobile mechanic a couple of weeks ago. I can’t remember the member or the mechanic, but it was a good experience and other members had good things to say about the mechanic. Anybody else remember that thread?

Edit: well the search function works

Hopefully @floatn turd is getting this handled since we haven’t heard from him this morning. Sucks to be ready to play and have something like this happen at the start of a vacation.😠

If I had some free time I could handle that in about an hour or two. Maybe longer if the garage isn't air conditioned lol

Yea I know it's not my Spectra, got tons of rooooom to work on that bitch in my boat! It's pretty tight in there, plus you have to lean over or remove the splash guard, and the battery it looks like.

But really, it's 10 bolts, 5 clamps, 2 bolts, a nut & washer x2.....4 hours river time is probably about right! 😝

Ok,
Tim at Iguana got in me in at 8 and out by 12.
They had to yank the motor to get the starter replaced due to a bolt issue.

Could not ask for a faster turnaround.
I'll be back in action tomorrow.
Vacation saved by Iguana.

Thank you guys for the tips and help.
And
(I'll see if I can wrangle an "Avatar pic" tomorrow) 👍

Burn some fuel, take some video (with audio)... and get the avatar chick in there too if possible!

Did you try hitting the starter with a hammer, that has worked for years 😂

I remember backing down the ramp at Perris way back in the day for a day trip. Back it in and the boat won’t start. Friends were all bummed and I said grab me a hammer. They had no idea what I was doing. Told them to turn the key and I tapped the started. Got on the water that day. lol

Similar thing happened to me. The solenoid gave up and I always keep a little wire under the seat and used that to jump the solenoid, I just never shut it off until we pulled back up to the dock. Not keeping me off the water.

Probably only 200 views, and then the pic of his girl was posted 😂

No offense to the fine young lady, but I want to see more of the boat! Wife doesn't mind me looking at pics of bright and shiny motor stuff. Bright and shiny females may pull the pin!
I have the same problem that might be why the post wasn’t quoted 😉 I might be old but not stupid 😎👍

So, starter question:

My battery (blue top Optima)
Is having a very hard time turning over the motor with my shiny new Hi-torque starter.
It starts everytime but it's slow and sounds like my battery is drained. Then boom, it fires up.

I assume it's because the starter is drawing more Amps than the Battery can deliver?

Note:
The battery was 100% charged & working fine before my new starter was installed.

Is my thinking correct?

I wouldn't think timing is an issue, or you'd have had bigger issues...but if it didn't do it before, not going to be that. Double check your grounds, since the mill was out, could be an issue. Possibly too tight to block/needs a shim...would be hard to hear the starter drag.

BTW, thanks for the boat pics!

I ran the red top in mine and never an issue with a similar setup. Remember you have to trickle them. A standard charger will fuck them up.

If nothing in your setup has changed, then it's a bad battery or a defective starter. I'm assuming it's been running perfect since it was last serviced.

Your setup is big dollar professional, seriously doubt mechanical issues are at fault.

Occams Razor, "other things being equal, simpler explanations are generally better than more complex ones"

Usually applies in mechanics, the last thing touched, or the base of the system is usually at fault.
