So get a call this morning at 3:45 am
It’s my mom who now lives in North Dakota
She is 88
But up until this last year has been very independent
I sold her house in Utah this summer
She has been having memory issues this last summer but didn’t seem terribly bad
Hell even meet Dave and Stacy last summer and has told me few times how good it is to have friends like them
Loved their kids
Well this morning she was totally upset because she didn’t know where my daughter was
Thought she was supposed to be watching her
I was like mom
Kimmy is 28 and lives in Washington state
It’s 4 am on Sunday morning
Took me hours to calm her down
Finally got her to stop
Talked to the nurse at 8 am
She realized she had a problem but just couldn’t figure out what was real

A year ago she was living on her own
Now in a assisted living place thankfully

Just realize nothing is granted
appreciate what we have

Sorry to hear of the recent event Dan. It is never easy witnessing the demise of a loved one. Especially when all had been going so well until now. Best to you and your mom as you navigate this new chapter. Hopefully it is just a bad day and she will get back to her healthy self once again. 👍

My wife and I have had, and have now, family members with dementia, so I know it’s tough. But, sometimes dementia-like symptoms are caused by simple things.

My mother-in-law would show symptoms at times, and that’s when we’d know her sodium level was too low because she was a fanatic about avoiding salt. Give her a glass of water with a little salt stirred in, and she’d be herself in no time.

Also, urinary tract infections, which are common in the elderly, can cause similar issues.

I know you’re not there in person, but if there’s any way you can get her checked by a competent physician, I’d suggest doing so, just to be certain.

Just got off the phone with my aunt that lives in North Dakota. she has been talking to the nurse and everyone thinks it is same thing, going to get her antibiotics tomorrow,
Had a long talk with mom this evening and she seems better, just frustrated she has trouble telling what is real or not, my daughter called her today also to let her know she is ok

Also i want to say that i am taken back by the support that i have received from people here.
I know in general i probably share more info about my personal life on here than i should ( good and bad)
Been a lot of ups and downs but i do appreciate the support, even people that don't agree with my lifestyle ( might drink to much etc)
its amazing how much people do care even thou some we have never met.

Who would have thought that a boating website could be so important and appreciated.
and its not just this time but its been that way for years for me.
I texted Dave earlier to thank him, i know he gets a lot of shit but don't know if he really knows how this site really does help people,

and yes i have a RD SUX sticker

Praying it is a UTI and the antibiotics will clear it up and she gets back to normal quickly. So difficult and frustrating when they are so far away.

Been through it with no help from my siblings. Helped the funeral home guys carry her out on the morning of her 79th birthday. It ain't easy.
Testify. Good on you for doing the right thing.

Went through the infection thing with my dad also. Amazing how things affect older people. Hope it works out Dan.

Stay on top of that uti. In the mil it acts like a stroke. They really cause havoc.

Sorry that both of you are going through that and hope the antibiotics help.

I am dealing with the same situation right now with my father and it is hard to watch him go down hill.
He is in worse shape than your mother (bed ridden) but told me the same thing " I don't know what is real".

A week ago Friday, I ended up in the ER, spent a week in the hospital and now am in a Physical Rehab facility for 3 weeks. So, yes, live like today may be your last.
Sorry to hear that. Prayers for a speedy recovery.

Hoping it’s a UTI- my grandma gets them every few months and the moment I sense any confusion, I test her with the strips and sure enough it’s a UTI- it’s called delirium. Some hydration and antibiotics, and she is back to normal.

See if she can drink 1 glass of cranberry juice a day or cranberry pills. Just be careful with the pills because they can cause low blood pressure. So I have my grandma take them at night, there was some fainting episodes that the doctors couldn’t pinpoint and I finally did some research on the pills and changed her dosage to 1 and only at night. It stopped the episodes.

Best of luck and praying for your mom.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. You never think about it until it happens. I have been dealing with colorectal cancer since 2015, when they gave me 6 months. Fooled them, but I know I’m living on borrowed time. I’ve had a magical life with absolutely no regrets. My wife picked me up in a bar 53 years ago. As we watched my parents age, we decided we’d better get married in the event something happened to one of us. We got married 26 years ago and it was a 3 day party with 18 of our family and friends. Had a reception with 100 later on. Lost my best friend 2 years ago, another good friend has Parkinson’s and is in a care facility.
Not exactly how I’d planned to spend my retirement years, but shit happens and I take it a day at a time.
I’ve been hanging around RDP for 15+ years watching the group and it keeps me sane or insane, not sure which. My hope is to get back on the water this summer. Pretty much done working, enjoy it immensely, but can only do so much.
Everyone stay safe and healthy, Go home, hug your wife, kids and dog.

Enjoy today the best you can because eventually tomorrow will not come for all of us. My wife has stage 4 cancer but we live our lives normally as if it's not there. She enjoys working which takes her mind off health. Lost many friends recently & lots who are living with Parkinson's. Just sayin'

… Hang in there man… you can do this.., you don’t wanna end up like I did last year… Two months in a facility… because I had let myself get so run down there wasn’t much left of me…that was 11 months ago…👍

I have never heard of the UTI causing these kind of issues. But I’m wondering if that might be going on with my mom as well?

I’m glad to hear she’s feeling better. Very scary stuff :(

It’s very common. Wife sees it every week, and a lot of the patients are altered. It’s very common with elderly people not “feeling thirsty” and UTI is the result. Both in men and women (more common).

Happened to my 89 year old mother in law 2 years ago. She was totally disoriented & confused. Turns out it's very common in older folks. Easy to have checked out too.

Sounds like it is common in older folks, and it gets misdiagnosed as a stroke regularly, just need to drink more

My good friend and WWII vet Marty Karp was still driving and going to work as a golf course starter four days a week at age 93 when he contracted a UTI. We lost him ten days later.

I'm keeping your mom in my thoughts, it's so nice to hear she's better.

Guy at work got one. Put him in a coma over 2 weeks. Thought we were going to lose them as it’s my understanding two weeks in a coma is kind of a point of no return.
My understanding is the type of infection from a UTI is able to breach the blood brain barrier

It’s called urosepsis. It’s when the bacteria from the infection enters the blood stream.
