Well, I made it through Katrina. Still hammering at it through the economy, but barely. As a business owner, if I`m paying the bills and labor, I`m doin` damn good. Now the oil spill. Don`t know whats in store for my ass now.

The odor of petroleum is heavy in the air and thats with a 20 mph wind. I`m about 130 miles from the rupture. It ain`t lookin good for the Gulf Coast. All fisheries are gonna be shut down by tomorrow at noon. Might be a decade before my son gets to enjoy what I did growing up. Damn sure won`t eat oysters with me till he`s in his teens (5 years old now).

If the tree huggers wanted green energy, they just got a hell of alot closer now.

I admire you doing things with your son. It's part of a wonderful family bond.

Try to stay positive, HOSS. Sure, you can't eat oysters with your son but I'm sure you'll find another bonding activity.

Why don't you both drop trou and post up a shot of father and son dicks?

The problem here just like Katrina is our Governor waited TOOO LONG in doing anything about it...

They knew for a week this was creeping towards the coast line... Now we potential storms all weekend that will make it harder to control the oil...

I'm wondering who was keeping an eye on the eye watcjing the oil spew out in the guls @ 42,000 barrels a day since this happened...

200,000 gallons a day is what I've heard since they discovered the other 2 leaks. I think they didn't react quick because the reports said there was no leak & everyone was fixated on the explosion. Then it was 1 leak & ohh shit now it's 3. They say the Valdez was 11,000,000 gallons, but this could take up to 3 months to stop the leak - I'm not doing the math on that - it will be an enormous disaster.

... roughly two Exxon Valdez's (Valdezi??) 200k x 90days is 18,000,000 gallons

So far the drift is East of the river. Mississippi, Bama and West Coast Florida can just file bankruptcy now because the tourism industry just went belly up. Looks as if I will be volunteering for cleanup. Its being asked for citizenswith a boat to volunteer laying boom. Only thing I got right now that works is an RXP. And thats down while I fab up my new intercooler bracket. Finding out the info this weekend and me and my guys may be heading to the coast to lend a hand. I can only shut down the shop maybe for 2 days due to economic downfall in my bank account.

5k barrels a day, 210k gallons.

Got a buddy who stopped in the shop and he`s heading to Cocodrie in the am to check out the camp and format of volunteer work. I don`t mind helping, its my own backyard. But cleaning a seagull? Never tried that. They have one hell of a beak!

I also hard that (so far) its not thick stuff just a sheen. My guess is that the waves are breaking it up?

Terrorism? Hell, I don`t know. But if there was a worse case scenario with weather, it was picked. Hurricane season starts in a month and Obama stopped ALL new drilling. These estuaries supplied 1/3 of all seafood in the continental U.S. My guess is China is happy. Destroy coastal economies for 5 states. If ya wanted to kick a man when he`s down, no better time than the present.

Valve inop my ass, its a steel box with handles. Its as empty as my bank account. Am I crazy? Maybe. The U.S. government,,, do you trust `em?

As a boy from lake charles , la.....27 year oilfield vet....I'm embarrsed for the industry. I have worked for BP north slope, Ak....seem to run it tight.
I dont work for them today.

Bottom line, I work a platform - 70 wells w/ blowout preventers @ surface....we produce 70,000 BBl/day........70 wells! My platform is in 900' of water - it stands on the ocean floor - solid wells - pipe to surface BOP on the platform.

This folk up was a exploration boat. It floats - drills 1 well - to find a field. This well was in 5000' of water AND 18000' FEET DEEP. This drillship(TLP-Tension Leg Platform) has the blowout preventer on the ocean floor - and pipe to surface.....remote on off.....They drilled into an over pressure zone they could not handle....boys - they are set to 15,000 psi.....they hit a major find. When the SHTF(Shit hit the fan) and the TLP failed...not a big suprise that the BOP(Blow out preventer) failed as it requires pressure to work from the TLP. That TLP is on the ocean floor.

They will now drill a relief well and fill the well bore with drilling cement. 3 months to do.......

5k/day......120 days........MAJOR ENVIROMENTAL FOCH UP.

MAJOR ENVIROMENTAL FOCH UP.

This is RiverDave's Place. You can say "Major environmental fuck up" here. No need to misspell fuck... or environment, for that matter.

Thanks for the insight on the disaster. It's cool to hear what's going on from the perspective of someone who knows.

Tail between your legs? What are you talking about?

I wasn't kidding about appreciating the perspective of someone with industry expertise. It's like having a quarterback help you understand how a play is developing on field.

Hey... do you think it's possible to drill offshore with a reasonable risk of these sort of incidents? I mean, is this sort of event inevitable, a freak accident, or an operational mistake?

My answer was after your comment TB, TBL was because of my industries FUCK UP.

I have been involved in 500 wells drilled onshore and offshore....2 blowouts. Yes, it does happen.

" reasonable risk "......Up for debate:grumble::grumble:

Yesterday I heard Obama say he was ordering the Department of the Interior to dispatch "SWAT teams to all the platforms and rigs in the Gulf to inspect them".

Who knew...the Dept of Interior has SWAT teams? As in "Special Weapons and Tactics"?

Why do they need "Special Weapons and Tactics" squads to inspect oil rigs? Wouldn't engineers and safety experts be more appropriate?

What happened out there? Sabotage? Environmental terrorism? Al-Qaeda terrorists?

There are about 3800 oil rigs in the Gulf. I wonder how many "SWAT" teams the Dept of Interior has?

If they have 20 "SWAT" teams it would take them a couple years to inspect them all.

They still haven't said what caused this disaster, but you know the anti-oil crowd is loving it....more reason to stop the domestic and off-shore drilling.....even though this is the first one in over 20 years.

:hmm

Laveycraft, you seem to be very knowledgeable about this stuff. If the BOV works off of pressure, why cant BP get some huge ass compressor out there to close it? I know that equipment/rigging is on its way to drill relief holes and thats anywhere from 4 months to 6 months (due to possible weather events) from completion and shut off.

Next question is, will this well or find ever be tapped again? I would hope so. Accidents happen and I`m sure now there will be even tighter restrictions out there for you guys. I bet after this there probably won`t be anymore convicted felons on drill sites, lol. I have a distant cousin that has an AB tankerman ticket and rides Houston to NO hauling benzene (sp). He served 2 stints in Angola. The only man that can actually say he stole (MHRIP) Al Copland`s Jaguar. He did 3 or 4 years for that alone, lol. But there is only one boat he can ride now due to tighter qualifications for those guys.

Here's the story I was just reading:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100501/ap_on_bi_ge/us_gulf_oil_spill

Question because your in the industry. Is it possible since this is a major find under allot of pressure & the leak is @ the sea floor (doesn't require pumping to get to the surface), that it could leak @ a much greater rate? This story works out to 145,000 gallons per day. Also, @ your current pump rate of 70,000 gallons per day, something like the Valdez would be filling for nearly half a year (or is it stored in tanks)?

Really, just questions, I have virtually 0 understanding of how it works.

You are right on 200,000 GALLONS. Oil is mesured in BARRELS(42 gal.), so the 200,000 gallons is just under 5000 bbl/day. My platform produces 70,000 BARRELS/DAY from 70 wells. It goes via pipeline to facilities onshore. All offshore works this way - no offshore storage.

An average well produces under 500 BBL/day. Good well 1000 BBL/day. This mother @ near 5000 BBL/day is a MAJOR FIND. They will be drilling a relief well to plug this one and several new wells once they get their head out of there ass.

As the riser pipe(connects the BOP to the rig) and the platform fell over it is very possible that it took out the BOP on the ocean floor.

From the diagrams I've seen, originally the BOV was leaking (42,000 Gallons perday) & just didn't completely shut. But, the other two leaks they found were before the BOV, so getting it shut it would have no affect on those.

Well, at least we don`t smell it 130 miles away anymore. It was bad. No escape from the smell. It might have been from a burn they did. Laveycraft? I get more info from this dude than all the media combined. So please Laveycraft, keep us informed down here! :thumbsup

What could the Dept of Defense do in this situation other than use of subs? Plus the Gulf must be jammed with supply vessels and crew boats. Hopefully we don`t see any collisions out there.

At the risk of opening myself to an onslaught of shit I work for BP in Houston. Albeit I'm a Trading Analyst in the NGL trading group so I am about as connected to this as a car sales man at a dealership is to a factory worker that both work for Ford. When Crude was up at $147 a bbl then you could bitch at me for that one. Contrary to our media friends about the goverments slow response both MMS and Coast Guard were on sight the night of as soon as they got permission to fly. I know BP is running about 6 mil a day on this operation and thats just stuff were paying right now, not what were going to get hit with later on down the road. So far we've been sued by oyster farmers, fisherman, shrimpermen, families, and some park in Louisana and we've been told not to wear any paraphanalia outside of work. Personally I don't think they will cap this thing or they wouldn't be ramping up to drill the relief well as quickly as they are. I'm not trying to make light of the situation I'm merely presenting what I've been told and heard.

You're killing us all with this natural disaster, farmo!

I used to work for a grain handling company. It was always interesting to meet people in a small town, they would ask me where I work, and the next question was "How is it looking for quotas on #1 spring wheat?" ... to which I would reply... "I don't know about spring wheat but their network is rocking like a Cockshutt combine!"

This accident had nothing to do with exploration.

They were drilling a previously discovered reserve. The issue is, as I understand it, when they popped this carbon zit, it came out at higher pressure than expected and broke the mirror.

Then why is the oil driller on the board saying this is a "MAJOR FIND" if it's a previously drilled area?

The correct answer is yes and no. Mississippi Canyon is a proven field so it wasn't like they found oil where it wasnt supposed to be. They were drilling to find out how much was their on their lease, what type of crude it is, basically they were trying to find out how much money they could make off of this lease.

If for whatever reason the well head does give out the leak will be at 100,000 bbl a day as opposed to 5k. Or 4.2 million gallons a day.

Sorry this is not possible - 100,000bbl/day from one well. Thats an entire field with 100's of wells. A gusher well in Saudi is 8000 bbl/day.

Here's the deal all:

There are oil wells. There are gas wells. There are oil and gas wells(most common). We all know what oil is - the gas can vary from 1 main gas to 5. The occur naturally in an order -
Methane.
Ethane.
Propane.
Butane.
Pentane.

The gas is the pressure pushing the oil out. This thing is putting out serious gas(global warming) also for you Al Gore fans. No gas is why you see pumping units on land. Offshore is always under pressure - no pumping units.

A find, never know. They must drill several wells to prove that. I understand it is within the Mississippi Canyon field - but there is not one well there with this pressure. it could be a small gas pocket - never know.

Bottom line, the rig and BOP - Blow Out preventers can with-stand 15000-20000 psi, it can be diverted through a choke to reduce pressure. If all else fails it can be sent overboard, the gas can be flared off the side of the rig. We have options out there friends....we are not winging it.....someone or something fucked up.
