You should have brought cash. :grumble: What boat did you make the offer on?

This. Nobody in their right mind is going to take a personal check for something they have for sale. Especially not a big ticket item. Been burned myself on the personal check thing once years ago. Once.

I tried to close a deal with a guy but my cashier's check was $3k higher than our negotiated price. All he had to do was write me a check for that amount back and I would have signed the papers and left with the boat...
For some reason, he didn't go for it. 😎

Need more details.

What was it that you were looking to buy?

From who? Private sale or dealer.

What was/is fair market value.

Did you insult the seller and now he would rather burn it than sell to you?

You are being less than truthful here.

Nobody turns down ask... even a check. But you're not taking possession until the money clears

I guess I was a little vague with my post. I found a used boat online out of Tahoe that a dealership is selling. I called the dealership only to find that they are closed until Monday because they are at the Sac Boat Show. So I tail it down to the show once the doors open with checkbook in hand. I find the guy that's selling it and tell him I want to buy it. He tells me he has a guy ahead of me that's "supposed" to look at it on Tuesday. I'm here with a full price offer let's do this today. No go.

And as far as the cash is king thing, no way in hell I'm going to walk around Sac with that kind of Jack on me.
Also offered up a wire transfer, any form of payment.

Did Mr Tuesday put down a deposit? If not I'd say the boat should be available for purchase.

Unless said dealer wants you two to run the price up on each other...?

The boat is a Formula SS and there's still a chance if the first guy doesn't want it. It didn't sound like he put down a deposiit.

So you are offering a check on Thursday night. The dealers ship is closed and you can't pick up the boat until Monday morning. They have all day today and probably tomorrow to verify and cash the check. Or even make you wait until Tuesday if they are concerned about the money not transfering. I don't get what their problem is.

Their problem is, they are going to use the guy that is already interested against GRADS and vice versa in an attempt to jack up the price.

You're probably right. I'm going back tomorrow with the wife and will probably tell him I will beat the other guys offer by 1K. I really want this thing.

I will also add that the dealer(s) were very cool. Sat there and shot the shit with them about performance boats, Tahoe and Havasu.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I know in today's times it's hard to believe but maybe, just maybe the guy is trying to keep his word and let the first guy see/offer up on the boat before just selling it out from underneath him.

It's at a dealership and he didn't put down a deposit. That's not selling it out from underneath him.

Something fishy here!!! A smart salesman would have sold you (grads) the boat since you were ready to buy. The other buyer must have been a tire kicker since no deposit was left to proceed with the purchase. Was this boat the only one of it's kind??? The salesman seems to think so...

That plan may just back fire on them.

Doesn't really sound like it. GRADS already said he's gonna offer 1k more than the other guy
What other guy? Come to think of it this thread is useless without a picture of the boat, not the check.

This is kind of what I thought. He seemed like a solid guy and there's nothing wrong with that. It's tough to get mad at that. But I am bummed.

I understand that. I'm just thinking did the first guy also try and set up to see the boat but the dealership told them not til Tuesday because they they are at the boat show. So first guy thinks the boat is safe until he sees it on Tuesday. Only to find out said dealership sold it on Thursday/Friday. To me that would be selling it out from underneath him. Now if the dealership said we are at the boat show and if you want it come on down and he didn't go, different story.

Don't be bummed, maybe it wasn't meant to be. I've seen you in action, when the right boat comes along you'll jump on it just don't sell it like the last right boat to come along...

Ok. I just pulled a "Grads". I looked up the dealers at the show and found their web sites. I found said boat called and offered them $10k over asking price. I'm meeting them tomorrow at dealership to look at said boat.
Wish me luck

No need to do that, eventually you cannot help yourself and will reference it all on your own.

No, I looked at that one in person and it was kind of hammered and had very few options like shore power. And I know it could be removed...but that wrap.:smackhead
