off road gps

I am looking to get a gps for my crf450x. I will be using for dual sports. any good advise? Also i am looking at the ram mount that uses a u bolt around the hanlde bar. Is it a good idea to use a roll chart and gps. Has anyone rode the moonlight night dual sport in big bear.

I've done lots of those trails up there, but never done em at night. Make sure you have lots of lights!!!

As far as the GPS goes, Dont use the handle bar mount. The battries shake around and loose contact and that means it will loose your track. Find one that will fit in your pocket, and youll be much better off.

Or, Try this if you have an Android, it will even play back your route!

I use the Garmin Rino. The learning curve on it is a little tuff, but once you get it it's great. It also has a radio that give and recieve your location. I use it with my son in case we get seperated.

I do a lot of riding with the GPS. Most guys use the garmin gpsmap 60 series. I have the 60csx. I did the Big Bea ride last year but not the night ride. Sounds fun.

i'm stealing your mount setup from you...got the same one with a handlebar clamp and i just can't get it to my liking...either too high and vulnerable or to low and impossible to read without leaning back...

i've been riding with this set up with batteries on my 60 and never had it short out or stop working...on my 450x it was hardwired to the battery...

I have mine hard wired to my battery, otherwise the units batteries short out from vibrations. I use the ram mount with the u-bolt, it works just ok. I use a lanyard just in case.

I've never had battery issues and we ride some rough stuff. I think the older models had a recall on the battery compartment issue and Garmin added a foam pad in there on the newer models. Mine works great.

I also loop the lanyard around the bars as a back up but I've never popped the GPS out of the RAM mount even after a few hard landings

Mine is set-up so the GPS is protected by the hand guards pretty well:thumbsup

Ive owned 3 60's. All shorted out due to vibrations. Very possible that my units were older ones..

That is actually not my bike. The other pics above are mine. The last pic is the one that I used as a guide when I set mine up. My bike is a 2003 300exc 2 smoke. No battery on board.
