Are NRE engines even good or are they just pretty? I remember probably 10+ years ago they were crazy to most. Now idk.

I remember Booshy from GD.com never getting his NRE running correctly.
NRE always seemed like more hype than anything but that was only from a long distance.

Don’t know of any other drive builders that could take that abuse.
Predator runs two of Carson’s motors with M6 drives. They somehow live behind 2,500 hp pushing that big cat.

I think the secret with that setup is the turbos don’t make peak torque down low, plus I think Predator uses a two speed trans.

Carson already rigged a 42’ Fountian called Airborne, with two of his bigger turbo motors/6 drives , ran real nice 😁

Eh, I’d take a Carson Brummett motor over that. Carson’s motors are very nice looking and he’s gotten them working well for big power.

Those are carson's Turbo kits on that motor.

Carson's motors making well north of 2,000hp, steady state too, not on ramp pulls. I've been in the room punching keys while he's holding the motor at 4000, 5000, 6000 for a lonnnggg time 😲

Not very many dynos can sustain the load or the cooling needs of all the wet manifolds and turbos, Carson's can.

His motors are grade A, There isn't anything nicer in the marine world

Honestly I don’t know what Vern at West Coast Drive Service does to the drives. I have been there plenty and talked to him and he has never mentioned anything special he does to them. Perhaps he goes through them after every use just to make sure of no issues developing but other than that I have no idea how you’d upgrade those drives further than how Mercury builds them. Maybe changing the metallurgy of the shafts and gears above and beyond stock?

His dyno is what I’d call an actual dyno. It’s some mad scientist shit.

That’s my initial thought every time i see NRE, however @SMPLV just had his rebuilt and completely done by NRE and i know he’s extremely happy with his set up.

They never got the chance to make a lot of runs with the new setup, so I imagine Carson never got to fully dial it in. The goal was to beat Pure Platium.
Wonder if they are parting with these beasts?

The big beast started out as a project for them. I forgot what he told me it weighs years back. It's run in the low 160's before Carson's power if I remember. This is with a full stabin cabin.

So do Top Fuel motors..... Although I see what you are getting at, and I do agree, to this point the cost do not outweigh the advantages to make this GIANT change in 99% of these types of IC engines.

42 Fountain has multiple steps in the hull, They just feel loose at higher speeds kinda like it wanted to swap ends.

Does he have an understudy that can possibly take over his shop one day? I probably have awhile before I can afford one of his motors and the boat that would go with it. LOL

Back in the day (over 20 years ago) Tom Nelson build a BBC motor for my Chevelle. I wanted the old school look. All steel, no tubs and I use to flog it pretty badly. LACR on run what you brung nights, Super Chevy events at Pomona, Fontana and Vegas, etc. Ran like a raped ape and never had an issue with it. Frankly, I wouldn’t doubt his ability to build a good marine engine. He was in a small shop in Chatsworth at the time.

I really like the NRE mirror turbos. Seems like such a nicer package with those.

I believe Finnegan has had good luck with his NRE stuff. Nelson is building the engine for his Caddy too. Maybe he could chime in here a little.

SUPER excited to see more progress on the Caddy.

I saw a badass Impala SS at The Super Chevy Show back around '07ish at Pomona that was fully caged, ran 9 sec 1/4's then grabbed his buddies from the starting line off the return lane in the back seat before heading back to the pits. I've had a huge respect for a really fast 4 seat car ever since.

Your first times seeing it you are thinking holy shit are you gonna close that throttle ever? But his motto is it's gonna do it in the boat, id rather find and deal with any issues now.

Also he runs the motors as they would go in the boat, with the merc transmission on them, so you can also do all of your shifting work, anti stall, docking,.on the dyno.

On another thread someone mentioned stalling on engagement and such. Having never had a big power boat with the props some use, I'd never given it any thought. All the slippage is in the water. An aggressive prop would be like dumping the clutch on a car. It may stall, it may lurch, but it won't be pretty.

That has to be wild. The guy can probably build a hell of a Bonneville motor.

@monkeyswrench Kev, I believe they program a monentary stutter into the electronic ignition, or fuel systems on newer FI stuff. On carb setups, we had a microswitch on one of the dominator primary throttle shafts to work similarly like a Merc Alpha drive set up on the shift linkage bracket. This was not ideal, but better than crash boxes (especially when docking) due blower surge and monster cams. JMO

For the record, there is no “mercury killer” mercury racing is the biggest in the industry. Their R&D, tech, support, warranties and product in general are unmatched. Can you build a bigger faster motor? Of course. Will it hold up like a Mercury motor. Doubtful. I was talking to Ritchie zul (who I believe is probably one of the best motor builders ever) a few years back and he told me he basically closed up shop because of Mercury. They’re just too much to compete with. This coming from a guy that doesn’t run Mercury power currently. It’s cool having custom stuff that is different. I look into the engine compartment of a 1350/1550 boat, like cool, another mercury package that look all the same. My major problem with their outboards. All the same. I personally love the individual style, look and performance of custom stuff. But you can not discount Mercury racing and what it brings to the table.

So, mercury killer? Mmmmm. Hardly.

That's gonna be someone's beta-test guinea pig, hope it works out. Remember the dollars thrown at stuff from Goodwin and Factory Billet before having success.
Many great engine guys out there, but Merc's R and D is on their game.
Wonder if Nelson's (yes, I'm a fan also of him) are using inconel for their exhaust to the turbos for longevity?
