Looking at buying a clean '82 Baker with an '88 Evinrude 235.
I've never seen one without the Mod-VP hull or heard of how well they ride. The price is well within my budget so I'd like to consider buying it. Any experience with this hull?
My boat of choice is Stoker or Baker tunnel-V or Mod-VP.

I guess if the price is right go for it, but the tunnel version is the way to go.

Barry “obnoxious” has or had one I believe. They run good but a mod v would be preferable. I had an 82 mod v that was a blast

And I almost fainted with surprise when I saw it on the water today

Make sure the transom is not rotten. Check the gear case for water in the oil and doo a compression test and spark test on each cylinder before you hand him any cabbage over for it.

Love me a two thirsty five lol
Rings tend to stick on these. pull the transfer port covers on the sides of engine and actually look at the rings if you can.

That could get you into one hell of a money pit if not careful! LOL..

If the price is right, go for it. But expect the motor to be replaced soon. Not many folks working on that vintage of Johnsons anymore.

But if its just to get ya thru a few season and she runs, then heck yea. Just dont make it a "forever boat" because you will always be wanting the tunnel.

Whats NOT to like about looking at the back of em!

I wanna say I looked at that boat for sale in Torrance about 14 years ago. IIRC they were asking $2K. It needed some love. I can’t get past the ugly ass gunnels on the early bakers. That would make a great ski boat, probably run in the high 60s....or it would make a great money pit if the transom and stringers are rotted.

That’s what I like about tunnels...with an outboard you don’t need stringers, so the only thing to rot is the transom.

I raced the Baker V that Barry has in off shore, mod vp and ski racing for many years. Bought it from Al Stoker, it was his race boat that won the Parker Enduro, Havasu Classic and set the Catalina Ski Race record for outboards in '81 I believe. Great boats, they take a lot of experience and skill to drive fast. Once you drive or ride in the Stoker SST , you will be hooked.

X2 on due diligence with hull integrity and motor condition.

Welcome to the boards ATR. How are you liking that Baker?
It's often helpful to look at the date of threads when perusing the forum. This one happens to be from 2019. Are you actively selling your boat or just kinda intrigued at the idea it?

It's a great boat! My parents had the same one when I was a kid growing up. This boat has sat for several years due to some mechanical issues. We installed brand new wire harnessing but something else is going on. We just haven't taken the time to look into it. I'm interested in selling it.

Before I bought the boat I have now I was very interested in this baker. It's a beautiful color with lots of seating which is what I was looking for.

I think I know your parents, they own the place off Budweiser Rd? If that's them, genuine people (Rather not say names on open forum).

That’s us! If you know anyone interested the boats out on the property. Im open to selling it mainly because it just sits there unless someone wants to take a look and tell me what’s going on with it.
