What they are proposing (IMO) doesn't really affect normal boating activities on the lake / river. Their is a small purple section down actually on the lake that is no motorized vehicles.. That's for kayaks only at this point, so "technically" a small portion of Havasu is being closed, but according to that diagram it's pretty close to shore, so I don't think most would even notice? That is also providing the light blue area isn't from the center of the river east of course... which I don't think is their "intent" even though that's what it shows on that diagram. Hard to say, but I think that will be answered on Aug 17th at the public meeting.

What I don't get is why they are so concerned about these marsh areas? They make it sound like people are ripping through these areas that are completely infested with tree stumps? During all of the meetings last year there was only a handful of guys total (Maybe 6-10?) that ran little John Boats to fish those areas? Why are they so concerned with HP limits, and all this other stuff when none of it is happening anyways?

It's a way for them to get their foot in the door. Is this passes with little fan fare then you can bet your ass more regulations will follow.

The foot your talking about is voiced opinion(s) coming from any local Sierra Club chapter director present at any future public meetings regarding the matter.

Typically I would be the guy shouting the don't give them an inch from the roof tops.. but honestly this doesn't look to me like they are doing anything that isn't already done? Just the small portion for kayakers.

As with everything final judgement remains to be seen until the comment period, but this CD doesn't look to have any negative impacts to boaters to me.

If someone sees something in there specifically Point it out.

I completely understand the mistrust from how the previous things were handled with Deborah Miller.. but there doesn't look to be anything in this thing that is looming or that bad?

I'll be at the meeting Aug 17. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Weren't the things that are "already done" not really done in a legal manner? I haven't followed this closely but that is the way it sounds.

So,
Step 1: Illegally limit use of an area
Step 2: Formally limit use of the area because, hey, it is already limited
Step 3: Stop trying to impose more regulations because you have achieved your goal (hahahah, right)

Boaters have everything to lose and the Feds have everything to gain.

These people don't do anything without being extremely methodical about it and they have endless bank accounts to figure out how to achieve their goal.

This will be one of those things that we'll be able to connect the dots on after seeing it unfold in the rear view mirror years down the road.

If the best predictor of the future is the past, why trust this CD?

I'll simply refer you to Glamis...started with, we'll just close down this area north of the 78, no one really rides there much anyway (I'm an old timer and can remember when)...and then....well you know the rest of the story!:thumbsdown:swear:rules

Vic,
This has no effect on our boating fun unless you're that interested in driving to Havasu only to come home with a stomach virus and a green boat.[emoji106]

The only compromise is that little purple area in mesquite bay for kayakers. The Ride Spot is open again, the large corner that was originally proposed is gone now.. The only question mark in the whole equation is what is the light blue areas actual boundaries to the west.

So if that's the compromise I'm good with it.

I haven't read this entire thread..but I find it hard to believe that we should support kayakers at all! They aren't paying watercraft fuel use tax, they aren't a registered vessel, in other words are not a "user pay user play" like us recreational power boaters... so why do the feds give two shits about kayakers...they are a small comparison in dollar figures to recreational boaters...the paddle sport may have grown steam during the resession but IMO is a fad and will never be what recreational boating is....if the paddle sport deal is so big, make them register and pay tax like us boaters annually....and follow the same rules as powerboats...watch the amount of users drop like a rock!

I still stand by it needs to be crushed. I agree that it seems basically harmless. But give an inch and they will take a mile. All of the areas they are talking about are basically self regulated. There's no reason for more legislation or enforcement.

I tend to agree with the sentiment.. That said, read the CD for what it is.. What they are doing has zero impact, so who gives a shit.. I get the idea of "later." but for right now, I think fighting it opens pandoras box.. I'd say let this go and we revisit in five years when they do it again, and see if there's any changes?

Then crush it.. I'll help however I can. :) I look forward to hearing your comments on Aug 17th.

Paging Grandpa Mac. He was in favor of the last proposal, sure he is in favor of this one too. Please chime in, gmac.

From what I heard, it was really more of an open-house kind of thing where you could ask questions, not like the formal sit-down meeting with a specific public comment period like the one last year. Very lightly attended.

I can see it now. This year they close off those areas. Next year for a mile downriver and a mile up river will be no wake due to wake from boats going by.
