It's not the heat. 7 of the 8 failures I had where in Southern California. Drove the Nittos on nice roads in OC and Inland Empire. There are pot holes but not to violent compared to the craters in LA. This truck never went to LA. Looking at getting the Yokohama Geolander AT this round in a 285/75/16.
they dont make it in that size

It is a combination of weight and heat. Most 1 tons diesels are pretty damn close to max weight on the front end. My F350 was close to 5500# on the front axle when I had it weighed. Tires are rated at 3300 IIRC. So that only leaves 1000# buffer on the front. The rear had like 3000# buffer.

Your truck seems unusually heavy...?

Depending on equipment, a new F350 weighs between 6,000 lbs and 7,400 lbs...

The front-heaviest configuration puts:
4,100 lbs on front axle (5,200 lb axle rating)
3,300 lbs on rear axle (9,900 lb axle rating, duallie)

~1,100 lbs front axle reserve capacity is par for the segment across the Big 3

Well....... You asked for it!

Short version of the story:
Bought my used truck and a set of 37s Open Country tires came with it.
That set dry rotted and cracked before the tread even got close to wearing out.

So, I replaced them with a new set.
(Since I didn't know the "history" of the first set)
Not even 10K miles and under 2 years later, the new set did the same damn thing!!!

Note:
My truck is not stored in direct sun light nor it is a daily driver.

I contacted Toyo after my Mechanic said "man..... I wouldn't tow my boat thru the desert on that crap"

Well, the good people at Toyo couldn't give two shits!!
I sent them pictures and a "write up" from the shop that I bought them from.
They had me talk to all kinds of different people and go their own shops for tire inspections.

Everyone that saw these tires said the same thing.
That they "have never seen such extensive Ozone Damage on tires that were that new".
This includes their own Distributors that I was sent to.

After more hoop jumping and emails, Toyo did offer to reimburse me couple hundred bucks for a new set of $1600 tires.
(based on a tire wear dollar amount formula that they sent me)

I would be reimbursed AFTER I paid full price for the new ones and the old ones were sent back to Toyo for inspection.

I told them to fuck off and keep the couple hundred.
I'd rather not have their tires on my Truck.
And
I'd rather talk people out of buying their crap for the rest of my days.

37x13.5x18
Toyo Open Country

= Don't chance it.
Buy another brand.

Truck is a 96...with a 50 gal aux tank, couple hundred pounds of sound deadening material, a camper shell, heavier tires...etc. all those little things add up.

Over the years I have had 22 nitto tires on my trucks, 3/4 and 1 ton. Terra Grapplers and Dura Grapplers. Trucks don't tow heavy or very much. Yesterday this happened for the 8th time. Broken belts in the tire so there is a lump in the tread. Was coming back from the river and knew what happened when the truck started shaking. Threw the spare on. This set was a replacement set for the last set that did the same thing. The recall process was a nightmare with Nitto. Took 5 months and nasty phone calls. Glad to be getting rid of these things. Happened to both the dura and terra grapplers I had. View attachment 786519 View attachment 786520

Had BFGs that blew apart on me all the time, even taking out a bed side. Switched to the Nitto Terra Grapplers and had one swell up like that, but no blow outs. Figure they were dry rotting since I dont drive the truck but every 2 or 3 weeks.

Just what new 3/4 ton comes with load F tires.. most come with load E!
In flotation sizes 35s load e are only 65psi and your stock tires are 85psi...sorry. not f but similar load rating in lbs.

5500 does seem like a lot. My service bed truck is full of tools and has a liftgate. Weighed it with a jumping jack and plate compactor in the bed and got 2.50 tons for the front axle and 2.75 tons for the rear.

Ehhh,
I did all that business for Toyo Corporate when I went thru this crap.
They were within the acceptable manufacture date range at the time.

Here’s my Dynapros on my F250. I guess more like 30k miles now that I think about it. Either way, they look like they have zero wear.

Thank you for the post. Just ordered a set of these. Was leaning towards old man style highway tread and may have done white walls out but seeing how well these wear for an AT I'll give it a try.

Running Toyo AT2s in 325/65R18 on my Ram 2500, keep em 45-50f and 35-40r empty or towing the boat, and higher when towing my TH. Have about 30k on em, they will have to be replaced by 35k or so.

Will probably try a set of the new Yokohama X-ATs in 37x13.5R18, the old geolanders had favorable reviews when ran on heavy trucks.

I had that same size tire but the original Open Country AT on an 05 F250 and was getting 35K miles a set. Was pretty damn lame.

3 Toyo failures. Last one tore up the fender pretty good... They gave me 4 new tires and $500. I wore those 4 out and went to the BFG A/Ts.... So far, so good...

With regard to weight, these trucks are heavy. Here are scale tickets for my CCSB with 2 adults, one kid, and a dog, with full fuel and about 500lb of stuff in my bed. With and without my Toyhauler. About the weight of a 1500 on the front axle alone, lol.

Is the only change between the two the toyhauler? If so, that’s a heavy damn toyhauler with almost 1400lbs of tongue weight!

Yes, weighed back to back. It’s actually a small bumper pull TH, Eclipse iconic 1913CB-LE, water tank full (50g) and loaded for camping but NO SxS loaded, which would normally take some weight off the tongue. Also has the generator mounted on the tongue, which adds a bit. Grey/black tanks were empty and so was the fuel station.

Yeah I guess that makes sense since all the living quarters, tanks, and gen are all forward of the axles.
