Hell, drive down Mission Blvd. In Pomona in the afternoons you see the early bird prostitutes...1 or 2 here n there. As soon as its dark they come out like cockroaches. Last year I was renting a u-haul truck on west end of Holt blvd in Pomona. I walk out to my truck to get some info. As I'm walking out this nice little silver mercedes drives thru the parking lot and out onto the drive approach and stops at the sidewalk. (This is mid afternoon) just then a "female" (apparently skinny male tranny in a long dress) walks up, opens the passenger door and gets in and they drive off. I was shocked as hell. It took me quite a while to adjust to that whole scenario. Most disturbing thing I'd seen in quite some time. Ya, prostitution in many areas appears to be alive and well. In addition to the more popular sailor titty bar destinations in the Midway district and downtown SD Broadway Hookers, was an infamous place that the US Navy, National City and the City of San Diego wanted GONE.
Located on 7th & Broadway in National City, it was a large dance hall bar named "The Westerner". So infamous it was part of the Liberty Speech given to sailors before heading into town to sow their pent up oats after being at sea for months.
No, Newsom had nothing to do with the rampant prostitution or drugs available in this popular sailor port call. Think the Parker "Sundance" in National City, expect far more rowdy and corrupt.
Unable to get convictions and shut this blight on this city striving to improve it's reputation, they were able to successfully shutter it in the mid 80's by changing the area's development and land use codes.
So how is it this old Non-Sailor, X-Army guy knows about this place ??? We were performing numerous government contracts on various area Naval Facilities from the late 70's to the early 90's, and one such two year project was right smack at the 32nd St. Navy Base.
On occasion we found it a fun spot to head with our entire composite misfit crew of electricians, carpenters, backhoe operators and laborers to go down a few pitchers of beer.
We were never there long before either some butt-ugly Nat City whores dropped by to beg a few rounds and offer free leg massages, or we'd be trying to break up a fight between my own vs. some random guy or my own vs one of my own, or commonly, one of my guys would offend the whore and Oh Boy did that start some shit.
This place was like going to the bar in the movie "From Dusk Till Dawn".

By accident, not realizing it's infamy, I actually had a buddy Foreman electrician from Orange County staying there using our company credit card.
I put him up there for about 8 months after I had to replace another job foreman on a Pt Loma Naval Station project.
He used to tell me some wild stories about that place, but knowing his gift for endless BS I blew most off ---- until one afternoon meeting with him for a few beers across the street at the Ramada Inn bar.
