Just busted open the latest issue of Westways Magazine.

Auto Club (AAA) lobbied and got a few of these new rules passed:

1. AB 62 Clarifies, or is supposed to clear up that a person can drive a vehicle with a front seat video as long as they can't view it.
I always though that was a law but evidently it needed a tune up.

2. AB 64 Impound lots must accept debit or credit cards.
Also communities may impound cars used in prostitution or illegal dumping.

3.Drivers license cost goes up from $28 to $31.

4. Vehicle license fees double. Amazing because this was THE issue Arnold ran on,, and it's back.
.065% up to 1.15 % of accessed value untill 2013 or is made permanent.

5. SB 240: An interesting new law is the Slow Down and move over law.

I read it that ya have to slow down and move to an adjacent lane when emergency vehicles are stopped with their emergency lights flashing, or simply slow way down and proceed with caution if no lane is available.

Now I thought that was the way it already was, but evidently this clarifies it furthur somehow, and adds Cal Trans trucks as emergency vehicles in this situation too.

I have a monitor in the visor of the passenger side. We were coming home from the river one time, and the wife was watching a movie on the monitor. We were coming through Palm Desert on the 10, and I noticed a CHP had pulled even with me on the passenger side, he slowed, pulled in behind me, then changed lanes to the fast lane on my side, pulled even with me again. He slowed down once more, pulled in behind me and lit me up.
He asked me if I knew why he pulled me over. I told him no, I knew about the law regarding the driver being able to see the monitor while the vehicle is in motion, but forgot about it from driving and listening to the movie that was playing. Listening to movies keeps me awake longer than music. Anyway I thought he was going to tell me it was for speeding, but as soon as he pointed to the monitor that was still playing, a very quick "Damnit" went through my head.

He went on to explain the specifics for the law which he interpreted as that I could have the monitor in front as long as I could not see it, that's why he pulled even with me on the drivers side before pulling me over. I asked, if I were to put something between myself, and the monitor that would restrict me from seeing it I would be legal. He said yes.

I pay the ticket, and think I've got a workaround by hanging a hat off the end of the visor so I can't see it while others in the passenger seat are watching.

5 months later, my son and I are driving out to the river on the 10. Coming down the hill where the rest stop is before whitewater I get lit up again. This time I'm sure it is for speeding because even though we had the monitor on, he did not pull even with me on the drivers side to check if I could see the monitor, which I couldn't because of my handy dandy Kings hat.

Chp officer asked if I knew why, I tell him no. He says the monitor. I say to him, "but I can't see it". He says it doesn't matter because I cannot have a monitor in the car that is forward of the front seats. I tell him about the other ticket, and the other officers interpretation. He tells me to hang on a minute. In my mirror I'm watching him go back to his car, and start reading out of a book that I figured was the CVC book. He's back there 10 minutes shuffling through the pages, and finally comes back to my vehicle, and shows me in the book the code which I had already read after my last ticket. He tells me he still thinks his interpretation is correct, and proceeds to write me the ticket. While he is doing so I'm telling him he is wrong with his interpretation, and I'll see him in court.

I wrote the date on my calendar, set alarms on my phone, set up appointments in outlook for my court date. I was going to have my day in court!

Three days before my court date which was on a Friday, the wife calls from work telling me she got Friday off, and wanted to know if I could get it off also, and we'll head out to the river Thursday night after work.

As we were going through Riverside @ the 60/215/91 Iwas looking at the interchange which made me think about Riverside which promptly reminded me of the court date the next day, I heard that same damnit go through my head that went through my head when the first CHP pointed at the monitor. When I got back home from the weekend @ the river, I went to the courthouse, and paid the ticket along with the late fines. Haven't used the monitor in 2 years.

two Tickets for monitor within drivers view = $481.00 w/fines
Dealing with a law that can be "interpreted" = Frustrating
Knowing that it is being amended so there is no interpretation = Priceless (not really priceless, but it had that kind of rhythm)

The 10 Fwy will be safer for you all after the first of the year. I won't be snoozing to Pink Floyd. I'll be bright eyed, and bushy tailed listening to Predator with Governator.

its called a revenue grab. when you drive the 10 with your monitors on, the cops figure you for "out of towners" and are looking for a little revenue.

you ought to see the way Boulder city watches the highway between town and railroad pass. tourists have just become a big cash register. all the locals know to take it easy.

Our z will be over $1900 next year if it doubles.

I know the feeling. Tags on my cars are already out of line IMO.

I'm guessing these new laws are California laws?

Yeah.
Like everything else in Cali,, it'll spread across the country like the flu.

Friends in Louisiana all pay around $100 I'm told.

I think the license fee doubling started in July of this year. My 07 Vette was due in July and it was double. My 08 Duramax is due this month, last year (first registration) it was about $550 this year well over $800. Incidentally my son bought a similiar truck in Washington about the same time I bought mine, his registration $72.00. BIG DIFFERENCE>

You guys really need to think about leaving this focked up state just like I and a ton of others have done. It took us a long time to make the decision but I have never regretted one day of it and every time that I read about laws like the ones above it just reminds me why I moved in the first place... I know about the jobs and family problems but... uh, oh well, I guess that everyone needs to make up their own minds...

I did too but it just got to be so focked up that we just packed up and left. Our business still makes money and the best part is we don't have to give any more money to those idiots in Sacramento any more!

Shit.. Here in Texas I payed $65.00 for my reg. on my 05' SRT-10.. I remember in Arizona it was over $800 when I first got it. It had dropped to $450 by the time I moved out here.. When are you Californian's gonna ditch that place or storm the capitol?? I'm waiting to see them try to tax you folks for breathing air next....

I am sure that no one has missed me in California and you can have the seasons in Michigan too. I live in Havasu about 9 months a year. Thanks for the nice words... I hope that you enjoy what's left of a once great state...
