I have always wanted a manual mill and engine lathe in my garage. Last week i was lucky enough to be able to start collecting machinery with this J frame Bridgeport I bought. I cant wait to get it powered up and get some tooling so I can start making parts. I have a few peojects around the house I would like to make on the bridgeport already. Can anyone recommend a good rotary table or might have one sitting on a shelf they dont need anymore and want to sell. Thanks!

Yuasa rotary table.

That is a very good DRO on the machine.

Buy a gallon of mobile vactra iso 68 (way lube) and a gallon of mobile velocet (spindle oil)

check the filter in the Bijur way oiler,

Fill all the oil cups on the head with spindle oil, and drop the quill to max travel and pour a couple ounces down the hole while running in low for several minutes
just like the placard says on the side. Also Get a tube of lubriplate for the side hole with the set screw.

Make sure the way oil is actually coming out everywhere, easiest way is fill the way oil system up with ATF and keep pumping it over the course of the day and make sure it's pissing red from every way, and lead screw.

Keeping the machine full of oil is critical in how it will last and run.

Racey,

Thank you for the info. I will keep my eye out for a yuasa rotary table. I did find a Rutland tool rotary for sale but wasn't sure if it was a quality rotary worth the money or not.

Also have Vactra way oil and Velocite spindle oil on order. Just need to get the lubriplate grease for the high low gear adjustment.

I like the idea of the using ATF to make sure everything this is getting lubricated. is it ok to leave the ATF on there or after i verify everything i need to remove the ATF and re-oil with way oil?

Also What sure i use to clean the year of dirt and grime off this thing. I was going to use mineral spirits but dont want to damage anything by using the wrong chemicals. Planning on getting everything cleaned up and oiled this weekend.

Wd-40 is the best cleaning for the mill.

Cleaning shit is about the only thing wd-40 is actually really good at.

Atf won't hurt the mill at all, just pump way oil through after. Way oil has "Stickifiers" 🤣 for lack of a better term, that hel the oil to adhere to surfaces without running off, especially important on vertical surfaces.

The mill consumes spindle oil constantly, this is an often overlooked deal. If the spindle isn't leaking a little oil, it's out of oil, like a Volkswagen 😋

Some common issues with a Bijur oiler are the filter in the reservoir become clogged after years of use, and also there are metering valves in the oil manifolds, they can become clogged, they are a combination jet and checkvalve, the prevent the way oil from just seeking the path of least resistance, and perform the task of adequately distrubing the way oil to all the areas as the plunger on the oil pumper slowly pumps the oil.

Rutland tool actually had some decent stuff in the day, so a good Rutland rotary is better than a worn and hammered Yuasa.

Also find a hold down kit with nuts and studs that fit the T slots for the rotary, they are metric usually. A good kit from Shars is maybe 70 bucks.

All Industrial tool has good deals on end mills and other tooling.

These machines will last a lifetime if they are oiled properly.

Ok i will use WD-40 to get all the grime and dirt off of it and will check the Bijur Oiler over very carefully before pumping it up with ATF.

Thank you very much. I appreciate all the help and info. I will do my best to keep the machine leaking oil so to speak so it will last a long time. Someday I want to teach my kids how to run it when they get older. I was fortunate to learn how to be a machinist (not as good as some people like you) during high school and would like to pass that skill and knowledge on to my kids. I feel the younger generations have no desired to learn which is terrible as it is a necessary part of our world.

Thanks again for the help.

I wish I had the knowledge to utilize something like that. I guess I'm tapped out with anything beyond a drill press...😞

You're going to love having that. Doesnt take much space and opens a world of possibilities. Might get in trouble with the wife though if you dont come in on time haha

Thank you. I will post them up as I work on them. I am looking forward to it for sure. Next on the list is an engine lathe. You can do almost anything with a Bridgeport and an engine lathe.

Can I suggest that you get the floor professionally done unless you don’t mind oil stains.

@Racey My VW doesn’t leak. Not a drop.

Lol that's actually a pretty smart idea in a pristine slab like that. Expect a lot of oil to end up down there on the floor around the machine. Most of it from cutting fluids

Didnt even think of that thank you for the heads up. Can you recommend a product. Just want to do the area around the machine or the portion of my garage that will be a work area so to speak

On a side note does your VW not run at the moment? "If it aint leaking it aint running"

Congrats on the new machine. I sold this Walter 16" rotary table when I retired 4 years ago. It was a beautiful piece. It got used maybe 3 or 4 times as right after I purchased it, I bought my first cnc mill which kinda made the rotary table obsolete.

Thank you. That is a very nice rotary and dividing table. I am looking for something like that but half that size. I will add Walter to the list of rotary brands as I look for one. Thanks.

Good looking out. I will contact him and have my brother go take a look at it for me if it is still available. Thank you.

Question for you. Is there a specific style of 3 jaw chuck for mounting on a rotary table or would one off an engine lathe work?

You have to adapt a lathe chuck. Usually it involves making an adapter plate 👍

McMaster carries it. Also most oil suppliers online, even Amazon and Walmart online probably carry it

Thanks, I did find it at McMaster. The placard on my bridgeport calls for light spindle in one cup and heavy medium in the other. Manual calls for sae 10 spindle oil. Seen different recommendations in different places

Just run light in everything. and lubriplate in the 5/16 set screw every year. Spindle oil weekly or more often.

The medium oil is to lube the power quill feed, light is fine in there, you won't give it that much use, most if the time it's meant to be left disengaged.

The spindle oil lubes the spindle bearings, much more important.

Lubriplate lubes the dog engagement for the high low shift.

On my Lagun's there is only a cup for light oil. And a grease zerk for the low gear set in the back. Bridgeport low gears are greased from the factory and can only be greased by taking the upper half of the head apart.
