Haven’t been on here in awhile, thought I would share my new ride I got a couple weeks ago. It’s a 1977 22 schiada vdrive cruiser. Pretty sure it’s a stock gen 5 454, th400 trans, Casale vdrive. I have a local boat dealer by me that I go to every now and then just to see what they got. The salesman took me outback where they keep the ones that aren’t really for sale, junkie, or whatever they are doing with them, to show me a boat he thought I might be interested in, I wasn’t, and I saw a little boat with a cover on it and a prop sticking out the bottom of the boat. So I asked him, “Hey is that a vdrive cruiser over there under that cover?” He said, “ Ya it’s a schiada I think, you can check it out if you want to” Ohhh boy I was excited, in my mind Im thinking how often does that happen??? So long story short, got me a 22 schiada!! Pretty excited about it, it does need some work but it’s not terrible. I’ll post some pics of the day I got it. Was told it spent its life in lake Arrowhead. I’ve been working on it, checking everything, making sure it’s running good, cleaning and buffing and I’m going to take it to Elsinore on Saturday just to do a little testing.

Should start with the trailer, needs another axle [emoji16]

In all seriousness, looks good dude. Some elbow grease and love is all she needs for a good time

That is going to be an awesome boat for you one day! You’ll just need a little patience, some time, and two pallets of cash.

That's if you're not going to re-power it, then 4 pallets! Nice find, get it running good and enjoy it.

Bitchen boat. I love the red and the wood grain. It shouldn’t cost you much if you keep it the way it is and just maintain it. Though I would have Adrenaline Trailers build you another tandom axle trailer. That thing looks scary. They just build my buddy a brand new triple axel for $5500. Good luck with it!

Thanks guys! Of course in my head I have huge plans for this boat, I’ve probably spent 150k on this boat day dreaming but the wallet says otherwise for now. The only thing I would like to do in the near future if the test goes ok is new interior. I would like to change it to buckets and a bench seat. And the trailer could use alittle love. Just having fun messing with it for now!!

Nice find. I enjoy seeing the old boats brought back to life with a loving hand (and elbow grease)

I'm not going to knock buckets and a bench (cause I have that in my 21'), but the 22's with the 8 passenger seating is pretty nice. My dad's 22' has the 8 passenger and it sure is easier to climb off the swim step and step into the boat than crawl over the sun deck. Just my opinion. I guess i'm saying give it a shot before throwing it out. Oh and it costs less to recover good wood than re-build from scratch. I have to say I saw a nice 22' in Barstow this past Monday and loved seeing that it had an 8 passenger set-up. I'm just a Schiada fan in general though.

Well, took the boat to Elsinore today, backed it in the water, let it run for a bit and noticed it wasn’t pumping enough water and getting hot. When I got the boat the pickup lines to the pump looked like someone had hokied them together with different fittings and all kinds of weird stuff in between the pump and pick ups. So we redid them with that clear tubing from Lowe’s ( thinking that would be a good idea so could see how much water it was pumping and if there were chunks or anything in the lines) with one fiting in between so I could hook it up to a hose and run on the trailer. And I also checked the impeller and it looked brand new so I didn’t change it, like an idiot, should have known better. So as I noticed it wasn’t pumping enough water I noticed the clear line I put on were almost sucking shut. So I figured this cheap hose crap was a bad idea, it’s not thick enough. So we pull the boat over to Longtins auto parts across the street, get new 3/4” radiator hose and change it in their parking lot and take the boat back to the launch ramp. Stick it in the water again, start it up and let it run, hoses aren’t sucking shut but still not enough water and getting hot. So we pull the boat out again, figured I needed to check the impeller again. Damn thing was in about a 100 pieces. I felt like such an idiot, that was sooo dumb not changing it in the first place. So we go get a new one, clean out all the lines and pump, reinstall the new impeller and take it back to the lake for the third time. Backed it back in started it up, ran good, pumped water (go figure, hard to do with no impeller) stayed at good temp. So my dad went and parked the truck and we took it out. Ran really good, noticed a small exhaust leak I will need to fix. Only big issue is it has a constant small vibration and when you pick up speed there is a certain point it gets really bad, slow down a bit and it’s better, speed up and it’s better. So not sure if it could be a bent prop shaft? Prop seal? bushing? Something in the vdrive maybe? I couldn’t really pin point it very well. If anyone has any ideas or things for me to look at it would be a lot of help! Definitely excited though!! Loved it!! And man, these schiadas ride great!! I’ll post some of the pictures my dad took.

Yes it is a 454 bbc. I looked up the casting numbers and found out it’s a 91-95 gen 5 series.

That's great. Glad you were able to repair the issues and complete the first water test.
As for the vibration, you're on the right track. The first thing I would check is the strut bushings. Lay under the boat and grab ahold of the prop, try to move it up and down/side to side. It should be tight, if it moves you need new strut bearings. PM me and I can explain it over the phone if you want. The vibration can also be related the prop. If it is not seated fully on the taper of the shaft or if it out of balance (not too common wit three blades though). To check the installation on the shaft pull the prop off and remove the key from the shaft. Clean the rust off the shaft taper with some scotch bite and WD40. place the prop back on the shaft WITHOUT the key and mark the shaft with a pencil or sharpie. now remove and install with the key to ensure the prop goes on as far as the mark you made with the key out. One other place that can cause vibration is the C-500 and shaft alignment. The C-500 is a very strong V-Drive but ir uses rubber bushings in the mounts. Sounds like a good idea in theory but if anything is a teensy bit out of whack it will make it seem worse. First check the shaft alignment with the v-drive and then consider building a couple of braces to help hold the v-drive in place and eliminate and movement.
Your boat looks like the sister to my friends "Red Rocket" Love the red

Thanks for the tips BamBam! Now that you mentioned it, I did notice the vdrive had some movement back and forth as you gave it power and let off. Thought that was alittle strange. So maybe that could be my problem. I also noticed that output shaft on the trans had a tiny bit of play in it, not sure if that is normal or not, still seemed like the vibration was coming from something to do with the prop shaft side of it. This is my 3rd vdrive cruiser but I’m still no expert on them. Never had this issue before. The boat is at my dads house and he got up underneath it today and wiggled the prop shaft and said there was no movement in it.

Bam Bam nailed it and I completely agree with making some type of dead man on that gear box. Champion boxes are mounted the same way and I really didn't like how much I could move the box just by hand so I made a solid mount.

The boat looks so cool, I cant wait to see it all rubbed out, should be beautiful... good luck

I see a lot of options and different ways guys have braced a split case Casale but any ideas on how to brace up a c-500? Probably a good thing to do even if that ends up not being the vibration problem I am having now.

I spent just a little time cleaning her up and doing some buffing. I think it will come out nice when I get to the point to spend some good time on it, trying to get it mechanically sound first before I do. It’s such a great feeling though when you get at it, buffing and polishing and seeing this beautiful boat coming back to life again.

I'll take a pic of how someone (not me) braced the C-500 in my dads boat. It is functional but certainly not the cleanest way to do it.

Here is how I did my Champion box. My nephew broke the mounting ear of his C500 when he hit a nasty rock, tore the prop, shaft and the v drive up. I was convinced that the box would not have broke if it was mounted solid. I was looking at a C500 under my bench and thinking of making a bracket that would grab the two horizontal bolts as well as the one vertical on to try and get some surface covered. never built it as he still has the boat torn down.

Thank you for the help, me and my dad are going to try and fab something up and hopefully that will help with my problem. If it doesn’t at least it will help avoid issues down the road.
