I know I asked about about the newer gm trucks. Which I thought I was sold on.. Well me and the wife went and looked at the new rams. I was really impressed on how far they came. Wish it had a Allison. But over all what's everyones experiences with the newer Cummings. Is there a reason to stay away from a ram/Cummins.. I've had great luck with duramaxes and Allisons in the past..

You mean Cummins?
The trades were predicting that the new Cummins will have more HP and torque and no Exhaust gas re-circulation.
Dunno if this prediction will come to pass yet, or if it'll be the 2019's, but that's what I've been reading.

Ask around before you buy. Go online. Some Cummins Rams models have significantly less HP than others Rams models in the near past.

Ask around about the Aisin Tranny. Their was a problem with some of them for awhile and dunno where that went.

Ted Barnes Sales manager at Simi Ram Jeep has the best deals.
He's always hooked up RDP members, mention me.

Had a '12 and now have a '16 (long story unrelated to Ram) 3500 with the Cummins. Been happy with both.

I have a 2018 Mega Cummins Dually and have had no issues at all. All of the diesels will have problems unless you delete them or drive longer than 35 miles at a time. The emissions are absolutely ridiculous!

Huntington Beach Ram or there is a Ram dealership in Idaho that has the best prices. Service will not be top notch, but you'll walk with anywhere from $16-21k off the purchase price.

I looked at them, but the dealership closest to me for warranty items is a complete PIA.
One of the major reasons I did not move forward with them was the dealership I would have to use for warranty items.
Ford was the same way, but I have 3 ford dealers within 8 miles to pick from, only had 1 Ram dealer within 20 miles.

Our local GMC dealer told me right before he sold out GM is difficult with their warranties now too.

It was not getting warranty items approved and resolved, it was the lack of customer service, lack of appointments and amount of time it took. Same dealership does warranty work on my Jeep. Last time, I had to wait 4 weeks to get an appointment, then it took them 6 weeks to get the part. 10 weeks of not being able to drive a vechical you purchased sucked.

They've been in business 99 years, someday people will figure out it's Cummins, not Cummings.

The new Bob Cummings show.
He had a car that converted into an Airplane:

Robert Cummings
Held the first pilots license issued No.1 in the US. Signed by Orville Wright. Taught to fly by Orville Wright.
Took a major hit to his movie career when Universal dropped black actors from his film, he refused to work.
Lawsuits ensued and his career suffered.
Went on to be successful in TV and won his lawsuits against Universal and all back pay.
Early advocate of health foods and vitamins.

I have driven 4 and towed with them all in the past year.

They’re nice trucks. Plenty of power and will get the job done. In my opinion, the fit/finish is unlike GM. I think RAM skimps on quality and little things like window seals, carpet and interior parts wear prematurely.

Go drive a Cummins and step on the pedal. It does not compare to the Duramax.

Buy yourself a Chevy / GMC and be done with it.

When it comes to a truck there are only 2 things you should care about

1 it's reliable.

2 good fuel mileage.

Every thing else is window dressing

I’ve owned a cummins a pstroke...The cummins is like a freight train, pstroke and dmax are like 2 strokes you need to get them wound up to make them happy.

If all I was to do was pull trailers for a living with my truck I’d own a cummins/aisin truck. For sheer fun and occasional pulling a pstroke.

2016 3500. Been amazing for us. Flat out I bought it because it was the least expensive heavy duty diesel on the market. Rides like shit stock (amazing after the Carli kit).
good looking truck. What Carli kit did you get? looks like there's more than one. Was it night and day difference?

Thanks!

I went with the commuter. Shocks tuned specifically for the road. We have a RZR for off road fun. With the kit and the add a leafs, on top of the 37” tires, it’s night and day. View attachment 701287

good to hear.. how big is your fleet? what issues have you seen to be common? thanks
I think the company has close to 100 of the 2015-2018 3/4 & 1 ton Ram trucks leased from Barco and Premier. I've only heard of couple issues with SCR system for emissions.

I have a '16 2500 Tradesman. Originally wanted a Chevy LS or LT but equally equipped the Ram was about 10k less. Not to mention the SFA vs IFS. It's been a good truck, I had the Rear Axle rebuilt under warranty around 5k miles and just had my batteries replaced today, again under warranty. Truck has 33k on it now. I've installed some Thuren Suspension goodies that have greatly improved the ride.

Ram offers 3 power packages, the G56 manual is 350hp/650tq. 68RFE auto is 360hp/800tq. Aisin trans (3500 only, SRW or DRW,) is 380hp/930tq. I've heard rumors of 980tq and no EGR for the next gen Cummins, not sure when it will debut. All SRW trucks get 3.42 gears. DRW can have 3.42, 3.73, or 4.10.

2500 has a coil rear suspension. 3500 has leaves.

If I could have my choice, I'd order a 3500 SRW Mega with Aisin trans.

Yah. I’m calling BS on his statement too. When it comes to actually hooking up some weight and towing there’s no question that the Ram out does Chevy and Ford. Chevy would be a solid 3rd place of the 3 when it comes to towing. We are talking real weight here not “lite” trailers on a 3/4 ton like you see most people talking about when they say a Chevy is the best towing out there [emoji23]

If you’re going to have a tow vehicle Ram hands down.

If you’re looking for a “diesel” that drives like a gas truck Chevy all day.

Ford is the mid point of the big 3. And does a good job of being a good tow vehicle but also drives fast to be a daily driver.

I have a new 2018 Ram 3500 Mega Cab 4x4 Diesel. Just towed a enclosed car trailer from Colorado to Palm desert and back. Averaged 13.5 MPG. Power is ridiculous!!!! Pulled the grade out of PD to Phoenix at 70 miles per hour no problem. Exhaust brake and tow/haul mode are great!!
By the way, I was Chevy truck guy for about 25 years. This is my second Ram and the fit and finish on these trucks is awesome too.

Cummings is the only truck you can still buy and think your driving a big rig and feel like a real trucker. Once you add 10K onto the back you know some real weight they just come to life, the HP goes up the torque kicks in and the brakes get bigger.

this 2016 Limited has every option Ford or Chev make and now has 340,000 miles Asin trans works perfect, just keep fluid changed. only repair has been one turbo at about 280,000 still tows boats and runs strong View attachment 701375

No it doesn't have every option. Not even close. I like the Dodge truck but come on man.

Don’t get all offended because I gave my personal opinion about your coveted brand. The OP asked for experienced opinions and I gave mine.

Like I said, Ram is a really nice truck, I’ve towed some serious weight with them, but you’re not going to get a smoother ride or more power than a stock GM truck.

The Fords, Rams and GMs are all nice trucks and have their pros and cons.
Buy whatever you like.

Not offended. But YOU wrote “step on the pedal. It does not compare”.
I just gave a non biased opinion as somebody who has owned all 3 and tows pretty regularly. You said nothing about ride in your first post. you might be mistaken in regards to my “coveted brand” since I daily drive a power stroke and sold my RAM and towwith something a little larger now [emoji6]

Real diesel trucks are inline 6 cylinders. [emoji106]

In the pick up market the RAM is the top dog when it comes to towing.

It’s been a few years since I sold my last Ram. 2500

I drove company trucks at work, F350’s and F250’s.
Most of my buddies all drive Duramax, and I’ve driven and rode with them towing 5th wheels and race cars and boats and whatever.
For the life of me, I can not understand why someone would pay more money for less truck, other than just brand loyalty, or styling preferences?

The Cummins is the workhorse...the “real” diesel motor as it were.
My over the road buddy used to call my ‘08 the “little Big truck”.

I am struggling to understand the statement about “flooring the pedal”...I know I’ve done that on all 3 brands of various years, the Cummins wins that contest.

Good one and very true. I have 2 Fords (2003 & 2008) with Banks kits and my Ram (2003). The Fords are after unloaded and take a while to spool up, pulling a load, the Cummins walks all over the other two. Gets better mileage too.

I drove a 2012 and a 2014 F250 powerstroke at my old job. Pulled heavy industrial trailers loaded with Drilling shit all over Az and NM.

They did “Ok”...but I knew I would never buy one. They cost more, get WAY worse mileage, and just seemed to labor.
Fleet rates must be fantastic for fords.

I went from a Duramax, and a Duramax before that into a 2500 Ram. Currently suing Chrysler for breach of warranty/ lemon law. I think my truck was built on a Friday of a holiday weekend.

Stepping back from my negative ownership experience to be as objective as possible. The interior is very nice. I have the limited model, and the only thing it doesn’t have is the massaging seats or giant moonroof like the Platnium Ford’s. Way nicer than the Denali or High Country trim levels from GM. The interior does squeak and rattle quite a bit.

As mentioned earlier Ram offers two power levels and transmissions in their trucks. The 2500’s come with 370hp and 800 lb ft and Chrysler’s 68RFE transmission. The 3500’s have more power. 390 and 900 last time I looked, and use the Aisian transmission. That is a huge step up in durability. The only downside is you can’t tune the Aisian transmissions (if you are so inclined). I understand why everyone loves the CUMMINS for towing. The way it makes power is different than a V8 diesel. It gets the job done.

Ram gets a bad rap for using sub-standard components on their trucks. IMO its deserved. My UConnect system glitches out and gives me a green screen weekly. They rear-view camera quits working weekly as well. The brakes squeak like the pads are metal-on-metal. I’ve taken it into the dealer to have them replaced, and was told they had over 60% life left. The ride on non-air ride trucks is a bit rough.

Once this lawsuit settles, I’ll be going with a Platnium trim level Ford.

I have no interior squeaks on my Ram. Have had the backup camera/sensors/ iconnect 5.0 glitch 3 or 4 times but it has always reset after turning the truck off and back on. My wife has had no issues with the 8.4 in either of her Jeeps.

Buddy of mine has a '18 F250 Platinum, and the features are incredible. Cameras and sensors everywhere, and the truck is almost silent (for a diesel...).

As complex as these trucks are nowadays, they all seem to have a large percentage of lemons. I did add a 10 year 100k extended warranty before I drove off the lot, I wouldn't own any of them without one.

GM and Ram are both debuting new trucks in the next year or two, might be worth the wait- though the updates will likely be reflected in the price. 70k for a truck is rediculous.

Initially, I tried to find a work truck low option Chevy, and they just didn't exist on the lots. Plenty of loaded trucks but all of the LS models were gassers. I could have brought one in or ordered one- but the price was in the low to mid 50's. You can get a Tradesman for high 30's/ low 40's and they are plentiful on dealer lots.

Ram is moving HD production from Mexico back to Detroit for the new truck. Latest rumors I've read are a model with new exterior/interior on the existing chassis/drivetrain for a couple of years, similar to the early 4th gen from 2010-2013. Not sure how accurate that is. I've also read that the Mega and Manual trans will NOT be available once the new model debuts.

If you decide on a 3500 with the Aisin ($2500 option), give it a good test drive, lots of compliants about terrible lag being introduced by the torque management if you let off the gas and try to accelerate again. Also, reports of terrible whine/drone on mega cab dually models- worse on 4.10 models. No real rhyme or reason to why some trucks have the issues and others don't.

Additionally, the Aisin requires 30k fluid changes and 60k filters, half the interval of the 68RFE. The Aisin does have a steeper first gear if you tow heavy or plan on oversize tires. As mentioned, not a lot of aftermarket support for the Aisin but it appears to be holding up well under 500hp and around 1000tq when (the engine is) tuned. The 68 can be built to handle just about anything if your pockets are deep enough.

41k on my 3500 ram Cummins with Aisin. Pulls over 10k regularly and doesn’t hesitate. Has a service bed and 4x4. Offroad it to the desert bar and take it through blizzards in mammoth. Not one hiccup. Love the truck.

water pumps about 60k then a/c compressors and turbos, i really dont think the average consumer will see these issues often, these vehicles dont get days off, they run 24-7 365

I have 15k miles on my Ram 2500 2018 larime diesel in 3 months which is my work truck. So far so good. The passenger head light got water and killed the led turn signal and that is on back order.

I am getting 19.3-19.6 mpg at 80-83 mph up to Vegas and back this week. Motor is breaking in finally.

My 2016 ram 2500 6.4 gas has been flawless

I had a 2016 Cummins, had to lemon law it. The truck had air leaks,in the cab, injector as well as dpf filter problems. It was a complete slug compared to my 2016 Ford 6.7 diesel. IMO the Ford is a better built truck. The power management in the software programing of the Ram flat out sucks. The Ram 2500 did ride better than my F250, I believe the rear coil springs of the Ram has something to do with it.
