A friend of mine's son works at a jeep dealer and told not to buy a new one they were pieces of shit and the diesel was the worst. So I have an old jeep that keeps on working.

If you're a tech, and by now you don't know how to remove older exhaust manifold bolts from an aluminum head without breaking them, go find another job.

I've probably removed hundreds of exhaust manifold bolts from GM LS engines and only once broke one.

Made my own jig/template to drill out ones that are already broken. Way before the tool companies came out with one.

Or the stand-by. . . . weld a nut & washer on.

LMAO. That was me on my first day at GM fighting with an alternator on a DOHC 3.4L in some piece of shit oldsmobile after having spent the last 4 years at a Toyota dealer. Domestic engineers like to do shit the hard way.
They don’t care about mechanics.

So what's the trick on removing the bolts. Been wanting to put headers on my truck but gonna be pissed as soon as I snap off a bolt.

I actually got good at that piece of crap. I think warranty book time was near 4 hours. Remember having to disassemble part of the front suspension to get it out. The hot ticket was having a Snap-on 1/4" drive 8mm swivel socket to get at that bolt way in the back. I was early on in my career and dropping that kind of money on 1 socket was tough to swallow. Older tech said it would cost me more money to NOT have that socket.

I have ranted like that while fixing several family members Ford POS's over the last 20 years! I don't know this guy's background, but common sense seems to at the forefront of his irritation. I can go in to a lot more detail on Fords fucked up engineering / plastic parts high wear items dating back to the mid 90's but will hold off until a GM hater chimes in!

How many miles? Is it from a rust-belt area?

Are any broken off now? Usually, the furthest outboard cylinders are the ones that break. Cil's 1 & 7, Cil's 2 & 8

I've used heat. Mini torch or mini ducter. Also, sometime tightening them just a smidge first before removing them helps.


The more miles, the more the original manifolds will have warped. Either already breaking them off or binding on removal.

I will say, out of the 50+ i've done - they weren't from rust belt areas.
Screw working on those vehicles!

No rust, 70k miles. That's what I've read is the outer bolts like to break more often. I planned on soaking in penetrate and hitting with a mini torch 1st. Thanks

Hahahahaha doin a f550 V10 now manifolds up here just torch the nuts, studs to get the manifolds out of the way then go after them , rusty plow trucks nothing new I wouldnt expect anything less , do this stuff in my sleep , Ford , Ram, Chev

If you break one off or its already broken, best way to remove is to just weld a nut to the broken end. Quick "tack" weld right smack dab in the center.

The extra heat from welding helps remove it as well. Don't worry, you won't hurt the head.


Also, sometimes it preferable to use a hand wrench to start. You can "feel" a possible problem bolt before it snaps off and stop.

Use some heat and run it back in & out.

Once you know they are all going to come loose, you can use a powered tool to remove them all the way.

Umm, I'm not saying the Ford engineers are good, at all but GM engineers aren't any better. The one time they put a distributor in the front they mount it sideways with a small hole in it so water can get into it. They will climb over a mountain of virgins to fuck a tech just like every other automakers engineers.

I understand what you're saying, but I have never had to work on a LT1 / Opti Spark. I am not a mechanic but am mechanically inclined and have wrenched on every US manufactured vehicle brand and a couple of Japanese and German brands. Ford in my limited experience is the absolutely worst when it comes to cheeping out on high wear items (using plastic in starter gears in the late 90's on Exploders), shitty head gasket materials on V6's..try changing a starter on a 2012 F250 4x4 with a gas engine then tell me Ford Engineering Ford engineers are above GM engineers. If you have to do this, you will redact your response if you are being honest with yourself. Have yo ever replaced a cracked exhaust manifold on a late model F series? Yea, the cab is over the top of half the engine and most of the studs break off when you try and remove the nuts. Ford engineering sucks ass, GM isn't great, but Ford is much worse in my opinion.

I am having web browser issues.. so sorry if this has duplicate posts.

GM made the Northstar engines, but did not make the POS V6 engines in late 90'S exploders and decided that plastic starter gears were a great idea. Again, try changing a starter on a gas powered late model crew cab 4x4 F series.. not sure about the diesels. Ford engineering assumes the cab has to come off for any type of long term Maintenace. I dread working on a Ford, GM, not so much in my limited experience.
