Old wood gate is about ready to fall down because dogs....

Currently is of conventional design with T&G slats and 2x4 framing.

New one is gonna be a 2" square tube welded perimeter frame. Most of the time when these are done, some flat stock (1/2" or so) is welded around the inside of the perimeter frame to create a channel...or maybe just a channel can be used. With wood T&G, I'd put a bunch of tabs (to keep weight down) and simply screw the wood to it so the wood is flush with the frame. This presents an issue though that water will collect on top of the bottom frame and likely rot the bottom of the boards pretty quickly. So...why not use vinyl....then no rot. Vinyl doesn't have any structure to screw through though....so now I'll need a channel on the bottom (and all around) instead of just a tab or a single piece of flatstock...water will sit in that channel and undoubtedly rust everything to shit, regardless of how good a paint process I use.

I suppose I could hot dip galvanize the thing, but I'm really not in the mood for that shit right now.

Could you use a weep screed to retain the bottom of the planks? Depending on what type of vinyl planks, the weight wouldn't be to bad.

Before you decide on a gate, run through Beverly Hills and take a few pictures of theirs.
Find the one you like, and copy it. 😉🤔

This a how I did mine. The double bar at the bottom it a safety, so the dogs have to kick out two screws at the bottom to escape. . 😉

Home Dumbo handles these in stock composite fence pickets, 1/2”thick X 3 1/2” wide X 5’-6” tall. They are $11.00 each and available in these two colors. They are viewable from both sides unlike composite decking. Try Blows they might have something as well.

This is what I’m looking to avoid.

Do it out of aluminum, make the bottom channel on a slight angle and drill some weep holes in it.

Just build a new wood fence and soak the end grains in resin. Wrap the posts before you plant them in concrete.

Or go straight up baller and build that fucker out of Ipe.

Posts are settled…3/8” steel channel mounted to the house and the wall. One gate has a 8ft span, so trying to save weight….(IPE is out)).

I’ll figure it out.

Could you leave an inch or so gap so the bottom of the wood is not touching the rail?

Would an 1/8" fender washer between the wood and horizontals solve the problem?

I have a gate just like you mentioned that is old. No issues with it rusting or rotting out the wood. Have another one that is steel instead of wood. It could use a little touch up paint every few years. But not just in that area. Your overthinking it. Just build it like that.

Next door neighbor just built same gate as lbhslz, he borrowed a welder and watched a few you tube videos, and it turned out sweet, took a few weekends to get it done.
