The WWII configuration of the Iowa class battleships had some serious firepower. In addition to the nine 16"/50-caliber MK 7 three gun main batteries in three turrets, there were twelve 5"/38-caliber MK 12 dual purpose (anti aircraft and naval) guns in six two gun turrets, twenty Bofors 40mm quad mount AA guns (80 barrels total), and forty nine Oerlikon 20mm single mount AA guns.

In naval nomenclature, the number of calibers listed after the gun size refers to the length of the barrels. For example, the 16"/50-caliber main guns on the ships were 16" X 50, or 68' 9" long.
