The motor was toast in less than 10 minutes and one run up comp hill at Dumont...whomever built it, VW Paradise according to the prior owner, set the endplay way too tight at .004 and caused heat which caused scorching and seizing. The case is toast.
New motor being built now...a monster 2386 with 044 heads, SCAT crank, Engle FK 8, Autocraft 1.4 to 1 rockers, topped off with some seriously worked 48 Dellortos. At 900lbs This car is going to crush a lot of LS cars! NOt all of them, but most! I am also completely stripping down the Mazzone and having it blasted and coated. Brraaaaap!

Actually, I ended up going to Dumont. I tore the car down at High Desert Engineering in Apple Valley, and they are going to put it all back together for me.

That sucks to hear but IMO .004 is tight but should have lasted alot longer.My bet is something else failed alot of older cases are beat already.My 1914 was set at .004 and i had no probs taking it to 6500 rpm

.003-.005 is what they call for stock.I built my motor to rev and set it for .006 i usually like .005-.007.I have the wedgemate set up for my crank and flywheel the guy who dis my wedgemate does them for all the major builders so i got a good deal.

sounds like you are going to have a lil screamer when done

Did you check out this motor before you bought it? The motor's probably going to cost more than you paid for the car. :thumbsdown If it's built witht the right parts.

Sorry to hear this, I experienced this with my boat and the 2.5/260. I got 17 hours then it sat for 2 years! :thumbsdown

WEll, for the amount I paid for the buggy, a new motor was already in the budget. Jim Hale, owner of High Desert VW Engineering, is a friend and he is doing the build. He's been doing buggies since the 60s and isn't charging me what he could. I've seen some 550HP turboed alcohol cars that he has built and they are sick. If you ever saw the sand dragster called "Sandwiser" that was his car. The new motor is going to be sick for sure.

Frame is completely stripped down now and headed to Extreme Powder Coating in Hesperia. Weight of the Mazzone frame is 140#. Gotta love that! I'll start uploading some pics soon.

Motor is going to be a 2332 (94 forged Wisecos X 84 made in USA forged SCAT-not chinese crap) filled with SCAT parts including the new aluminum bubble case to hold the parts together. Heads will be 44x37.5 all ported out and polished of course and should be done this week. Cam is Engle FK 8 with 4 to 1 ratio SCAT rockers. Nice 5.7 Chevy journal H rods w/ 3/8s bolts. Parts bill came to $3200. Would have been nice to have Pauter stuff but, were talking $15K for that. Estimated HP is 265 at the moment. Not bad in a 140# frame.

after the blast many many welds were ground down and re-welded.
Many new re-inforcements/gussets were also put in. In the earlier, lighter, Mazzone frames, you had to pull the motor from the front. In pic two you can see the flangeless flanges so I can take motor and trans out at same time from rear of car.
Total added weight so far is 15lbs. We are putting in seat tabs tonight and the car is headed for Extreme powdercoating in Hesperia on Monday.
Motor is being assembled over the weekend.

I added the same gussets on the top four corners as well. And the down tubes behind the seats. All done on a fibertech, really similar to the Mazzone. A 2276 w/ 48's was the ticket. Mary at Pauter did the heads, skat cases, etc. This thread really makes me want mine back. Haven't seen it in 15 years now. :thumbsdown

Bitchen car for sure when it's done should run great. i remember the days when i had my street 57 oval with a 2180 with 48 IDA'S the thing was a blast to drive. i would give anything to have that car back. good luck with your new ride.

ST Anthony, where this car will spend 90% of it's life, is generally a ton smoother than Glamis or Dumont. Don't need 23" of travel but you do need to be lightweight to rip up choke cherry.

finally out of the bake room thanks to Extreme powder coating in Hesperia.
Eddie did a 3 coat process on this "day glow" orange and it looks KILLER!!

I can almost feel the grit in my teeth! Should be ready soon! Still have to figure out clearance issues with the new console and the pedal adjust. Also thinking about a different gas tank. The price on this one was right and way better than what it had. New Jamar shifter needs some customizing as well. Jim up at HiDesert VW is working some serious magic into this car. VW Paradise is $$$$.. They have done some stuff for me over the years. I never had any issues with them, but always felt I was paying out the ass. LOL

I like your car, cool to see people still interested in not building a v8 car "cause everyone else is doing it". I always like the Mazzones.

I have an 84/94 in my Baja I built years ago. I loved taking it to glamis with no rear fenders. I have always used 86b WEb cams with 1.5 rockers, maybe 1.6(I think) it worked out to .505 or .55 lift. Absolutely carried the front wheels in first and second with a good shift.

Awesome engine.

After being in V8 stuff, I really enjoyed the VW, pretty silly when you consider what it is and that it is as fast as it is. Taught me some good lessions on HP/weight ratio.

My father always gave me shit until I took him for a ride.

It remains the most violently accelerating car I have built to date. Driving it in the rain can be a religious experience.

I made billet parts for VWs. It was actually my first paying gig I got when I started out.

I do billet aircleaner bases and tops, 009 dist clamps, alt pulleys, supercool oil fills, probably a bunch of other pretty parts I forgot about.

BTW, When I switched to the 84 Scat crank, I also sold the Dellortos and ran 48IDF(not IDA) Webers, much better than the 44/45's INMHO.

Ran like a whole different car.

It was a pricey decision though.

VW Paradise has buillt some really good motors for friends in the past. Wasn't pissed about the motor. Shit happens in the hipo world. It was the description of the rest of the car that didn't live up to it's description. Lesson learned. Now I have one very bad ass rail that every single part has been rebuilt or replaced. This is a new car now and better than it ever was. Estimated 285hp. Thinking about a 100hp shot panic button just in case. I feel like a kid the day before Xmas right now!

Love the no fendered Bajas!!! Maybe because I had one too and would dance the front tires off the ground with the right shift and bump in the road!! Spent many a hours twisting a 13mm wrench on it too. Built it from the ground up. All about the HP/weight ratio!!! ...

My 2276 was 11-1 with your same cam and 48 IDA's and it made right at 200 hp. Big heads too. Welded and ported.
Heads are welded and ported but anyone can do that and make big heads. It's how they flow is where the hp is developed. These heads flow and have extensive bench testing. Wish I had the pic of the work and the paperwork but I don't. Heads make HP. It's all about the flow. I'm just repeating what I was told est optimum hp would be. I won't complain about anything between 240-260. With the extra CCs, extra compression, skirted pistons, 5.84 rods, 12.5:1 this motor will find at least 50 more hp than your 2276. The gas will make up the difference.
If you want, I'd be happy to race you for say....some gas $$$ I'll be at Dumont for Thanksgiving.

Brothers knows Heads...and these are 42s. Mine are 44s and tighter. Rods in this motor are 5.6s. Compression is lower too. It's all about the heads...
