Dave I would not be jumping things if your not sure. Get a multi meter with continuity tester. Only test continuity with power off.

Well I jumped that f'n thing all over that box and nada.

So I put it back together. Put the fan back together..

Gave the string on the fan a pull just for kicks and Dave said "let their be light."

Not sure how my kids got up that high to pull it but somehow they did..

Long story short.. Try pulling the string before you go all commando on the electrical.

That actually makes sense bc those type switches in ceiling fans can get stuck.

Hot Damn ---- YEAH !!! LOL :rolleyes

BUT --- Going back to the beginning of this saga ---- and I quote: "For awhile if you turned on the switch it would flicker then come on. Then you would have to flip the switch a couple times, and it would work. Now it doesn't work at all. "

Does the discovery of the pulled chain also satisfy this curious condition ?

Baaahahaha!

Kids might be jumping up to reach it and pulling it down hard. After time, those chain mechanisms will wear out/ break. If it keeps acting up, go buy a new one at the hardware store. They're about $5.

So I went back in the room and flipped the switch about 20 times to check and no problems. Then I flipped it the 21st and it flickered..

So I applied some pressure to the offside without actually turning it off and was able to duplicate the problem. I need a new switch.

So now I have the answer as to why the light went completely off and stopped working. As well as the flicker deal.

The make up on the hot should be in the box, not the switch. Somebody go fix this for him, lol.

Dave, tie the two reds together with a (new) wire nut, and also include a short red wire from the nut to the new switch.

I have managed to get this thing apart twice now without any sparks. I really don't like messing around with electrical, and while I regret it somewhat I have always stayed away from it my whole life.

Then there's the other side of that which is looking back at coincidences in life. Person A jumps out of an airplane and the parachute doesn't open. His kid ends up getting killed by some item that a person dropped while parachuting type shit.

The irony and possibility is not lost on me that I am working on the electrical (not knowing fuck all of what I'm doing) in my son Daniel's room, when he was named after one of my friends that coincidentally died working on the electrical in his own house. I'm going to quit while I'm ahead for now, and try to replace the switch later this week, with the electrical turned off and some proper supervision.

Just fyi, a bad switch can heat up and melt/start a fire. Breakers are designed to prevent this, but I've pulled breakers out of a panel that were melted/burned themselves, so I wouldn't trust them.

I'm going to go to home depot and get one, it will most likely already be done by then.

What do you mean make it up right?

What he means is, the red wire wrapped around the screw while the others are stabbed into the back is not an accepted way to splice the hot. Both of those red wires should be wire nutted together along with a third red (Preferably) approx 6" long that will then serve as the hot to that switch. When you're done you'll still have a red and black on the switch and the hot wire will now be properly spliced in the box. BE SURE TO SHUT OFF THE BREAKER DAVE !!! :D

I'll turn off the breaker(s). I have heard from another buddy of mine that this house is wired a bit odd.. I'd believe it because it's built and roofed a little odd as well. :D

As yz450 said, You don't continue the hot out of a switch. Rather you would wire nut/wago (fancy wire connector) the hot to the continuing wire (that's wire going down the line to feed something else). While wiring those two together you would also add a 6inch piece of wire with them. That 6 inch piece would go to one leg of the switch. The leg that goes to the fan would go where it was on the last switch.

Not a fan of cheap stab wire switches and plugs. Get a higher end switch and attach wires with side screws. Seen a few failures with the cheap shit. Sounds like whole house might be shortcutted. Might be worth it to have a sparky buddy go through and upgrade and inspect switches and plugs throughout.

If I went through the whole house that would be way down the road.. There's a million other things around here that I have to drop coin on before I even get to that. For now if I flick the switch and the light comes on, then that's going to be good enough.. LOL

Just the projects in the garage I need to finish is enough $$ to choke an elephant.

GOOD TO SEE YOU ONLINE MIKE! I miss your posts quite a bit.

Thanks Dave

It wouldn't take someone that's fast too long to go through it all and check replace.... might save you a fire down the road, who knows. A few cases of beer well allocated... :D
