2006 DCB with three batteries. I need to replace all of them. There is a single one mounted on the Starboard side and two mounted on the port side. Currently they are all Starting batteries from NAPA and are rated at 800 CCA and 1000 CA Model number is 8034.

Surprise they dont have that battery in stock. So I thought about doing Optima Blue Tops, but they are a little smaller so the box has to be modified. I call Interstate and they say I need 1 starting battery and 2 deep cycle. Mother fucker this just gets more complicated.

So is the single battery the starting battery and the two are for the radio? If so why would they use all starting batteries?

Yes I did call DCB but they're at lunch and I want to get this fixed today...

You definitely want at least one starting to kick that motor over. Starting batteries have a bit more cranking power. All the others are mainly used for Stereo and accessories.

Eric called back and said that with the load of the stereo system Deep cycles wont work very well and to use starting batteries for all three. Position 1 is wired for the single battery and position 2 is wired for the dual batteries.
When stopped and listening to radio use position 2 so I still have a good starting battery. All Makes sense.

Now back to the batteries I simply can't find batteries with the same amount of cranking amps, in the same size with the right terminal locations. So no matter what I do something is going to need modifying.....fuckin boats

Ron's Audio set up our boat with one starter and one deep cycle battery. You could basically run around all day on the deep cycle. The starter was just for backup if we ran the deep cycle all the way. I'm not an electrician... That's just what I was told.

Not sure how much work it would be, but I'd probably ditch the third battery all together and just go with a 2 battery setup.. I had a huge stereo in my Nordic, and with two innerstates I could pound it at 80% for a few hours, and it will still start the boat.. If I laid on it for everything it was worth it was good for about 45 minutes before flattening both batteries.. but if I let it sit for a few it would barely crank over the motor. LOL By the way switching to optima blue tops that went to 1 hour on full tilt and that was about it.

Unless you are center stage life of the party type shit.. I can't imagine needing to haul that much battery around with you.

I would think the same, one starting battery and two "house" batteries.

Interstates are solid batteries!

Interstate are solid. I have had them on my deck boat for a few years. They are the dual starting and deep cycles. Stereo plays all day and boat fires up every time!

I just called interstate and they said that they have one starting battery and 2 deep cycle so Im going to head up there and see if they are physically the same size.

The 2 wired together in parallel is essentially one big battery fwiw.
I would definitely stick with the 1000 CCA for the starting batt, pretty sure that's what factory Mercury requires.

That runs counter to any advise you will get from anybody who is familiar with batteries.
"Starting" batteries are not designed to be deeply discharged for many cycles and will deteriorate more quickly if used as a "house" battery.
Most deep cycle batteries sold are marginally better suited for deep discharge cycles but in any case are better than a high CCA starting battery.

That being said, I have 2 group 31 Lifeline deep cycle batteries in the Formula and have never had an issue. I use the "All" position to start the boat when first launched and when running. When floating or anchored with the stereo on, I use position 2. When re-starting the boat after some time at anchor, I start it using position 1 an then switch to all before taking off.

I have 1 grp 24 for the starting battery, and 2 grp 27 Interstates for running the stereo.

I dont agree with Eric's statement on using starting batteries for the stereo.. Ive been running 1800 watts off the deep cycles and I can run the stereo for better than 6 hours before they start to complain. Your biggest issue would be charging them back up for round 2:D

Like others have said, 2 deep cycles for the "house" batteries and 1 starter battery for the engine. I'd actually look into a solid state battery isolator so you wouldn't have to worry about switching over the batteries when you stop. It would essentially shut off the starter battery when the engine is off and allow everything to run off the house batteries. Then when you go to fire it back up, it would turn the starter battery back on.

Heard it said there are now only a few battery manufacturers in the country? All that varies is the specs per particular battery and they change the name as needed ?

3 new batteries from Interstate. 1 1000 Marine CA and 2 Deep cycle. I think he called them group 24s. I just wanted ones that fit the current battery trays because I don't want to have to change the trays or wiring. :thumbsup

Never seen CAT batteries before, anything special about them?

Nope. Just like everyone elses. Built by one of the 2 main manufacturers. Exide and Johnson controls. Everyone has their own specs but they are all within very small variances with different stickers. Batteries are definitely not what they used to be years ago.

Tracy. Just cross your napa part number with all the other avaliable brands you are entertaining. All you need is the same group number as what you have now. deep cycle and starting batteries that are group 24 or 27 will be the same size and post location. You wont have to change battery boxes. If you go optima you will be having to change boxes because optima does not follow the group deal all other brands do. Just my 2 scents.

I agree with this as I have the same battery setup running about 5,000 watts of Stereo.

Yes.
As McRib says, there are a very limited number of battery manufacturers that private label for everyone else. These batteries are made to their customer's specs.
Cat premium batteries have the highest spec. that the battery manufacturers have to meet.
