You can see in the first 5 responces, that's like asking the age old question....chevy or ford.😄
I've been using dell for decades but for a home use application you probably(my .02cents) will be happy with just about any brand that meets your needs.

You could get a nice off lease refurb PC for pennies and be ahead of the game. We like these Dell minis. Then splurge on a nicer screen. They are cheap also these days, Gramps.

It's the computer I use formy fire deployment work. Spreadsheets, word processing (Excel & Word), fire billing through the state FBS system, some videos.....nothing that requires huge power.

When it comes computers…
I highly recommend Razer Blade…. They are not cheap, made for gamers. No I do not game, but they last for ever…

I buy mine as returned… First one at Fryes, way back in the day… used it for 6-7 years, gave it to my son…. Second one I bought was from Best Buy…

As someone who travels alot for business, I have had all the Dells/HPs over the years issued to me.
They suck compared to my personal Razer…

Lenovas are slightly better than Dells/HPs, but thats comeing from someone who uses the shit out a computer.

My current company issued HP thats about 1 year old is ok… but slow as fuck, especially against my 5 year old Razer.

I got the wife a new HP victua for work. My daughter also uses it for drawing and screen printing. Works good been happy with it.

I am still using a 10 year old dell laptop. Battery is toast but it's still chugging along.

I 2nd Lenovo Laptops if you’re just doing spreadsheets and such. I bought one approximately 15 years ago that’s still running strong. I’ve only ever had to replace the batteries.

My #1 criteria in selecting a laptop is where the charge port is located so I don't end up breaking the damn charge port from the cord getting tugged on or knocked into all the time in the place where I use it the most. You might consider that.

Lenovo ThinkPad, used to be IBM ThinkPad. Still pretty sturdy.
I'm on my 3rd Lenovo and they have held up better than the others I have tried.
I loved Windows 7 and hated when I had to move to 10, if you're a fan of the original Windows start style, I highly recommend this.

Of course, now that I've finally figured out and gotten comfortable with Win 10.
Oh I know the feeling, trust me I wish we could keep 10, its a workhorse!

11 is just cramming Microsoft's AI, Copilot, down everyone's throat. At my day job we have 5000 machines to upgrade, we are at about 40% completed.

As far as work horse Lenovo's, the ideapad is the consumer grade. The ThinkPad is the "commercial" grade. They have some different model for "gaming" etc. ThinkPad have the best build quality, in my opinion.

While the cheapest minimum spec machine can do what you need to do NOW, look at going up a few "levels" for future proofing. You can go down a rabbit hole researching specs. More RAM is good, more cpu speed is ok, more storage is dependent on usage and can be upgraded usually or supplemented.

I used to look for the largest storage option but found having a couple of portable hard drives is the way cheaper option. My current Lenovo was right around $550 with a 256GB drive, same machine with a TB was considerably more.

With the newer MVNE solid state hard drives a lot of laptops are upgradable, (not always officially) but yes external drives are cheaper than to buy a larger drive from the manufacture.

Do you want it as a mobile device or do you have a specific spot where you do your keyboarding? When the company took back our old Dells and upgraded to HPs I bought my old Dell for $100 with a base. I upgraded the memory, bought a 32” monitor and a wireless keyboard. I was all in for less than $500. If I do need to be mobile with the computer I just pop it off the base and grab my wireless thumb mouse (https://a.co/d/b39AEZ2) - I hate the touchpads and I don’t need to set the mouse on a surface, just roll the ball, and I’m good to go.

Whether you go with Windows 10 or 11, just make sure you don't get anything with 10s or 11s....

Gotcha.

And I totally agree with @Xring01 all the big name brands suck ass.

I personally like Acer for laptops, and for PC's, I build em myself.

For what you are doing, dual screens would make your life Oh So Much Easier!

Are you running duals now?

Will you be buying online? Or is there a Costco close to you?

I'm looking hard at a change to Linux (Ubuntu or Mint) which come with LibreOffice.
We have 3 'non-eligible' Win11' Thinkpads in the house.
Screw Microsoft.

Buying a new computer is a miserable f*cking experience for a non-nerd. Way too many options. I ended up over spending on a Lenovo ThinkPad, which has been fine except for the fact I paid Lenovo for the non-subscription of MS Office and then was unable to retrieve the registration KEY. F*ck Microsoft #1, and f*ck Lenovo for shit customer support. Their only remedy was to send the entire computer back for a full refund.

Windows 10 becoming obsolete I believe tanked my 6 YO high end desk top last month . It was a gaming rig from I Buy Power, even though I never gamed on it. It had performed flawlessly but once MS notified me it didn't support W11 it started having issues. I bought another I Buy Power mid range PC gaming computer a couple of weeks ago from Best Buy. I don't play video games or do video editing, but I know that high quality parts parts matter and being able to add SSD's, more ram and having a MB that is able to be upgraded matters in the computer world. I bought this on sale for under 1K.

I was able to plug in the 2 each SSD's from my last computer.

I’ve had the same Mac book since 2013 when I was in college… still running great and battery will last for more than 4 hours.

There’s no better bang for your buck.

I messed up...

I didn't understand that you wanted a laptop.

I should have paid more attention to the 17inch screen comment I guess!

😜
