The plumbing is done on the Canyon, checked out the MSD tonite, and tomorrow nite the cylinders get fogged. I'm lighting her off this weekend :D carb6.jpg

I used to light my 500" 18' Performance up in my driveway but I would go next door to our older neighbor and let him know what was about to happen. He couldn't get out of his chair fast enough to follow me back to hear that sweet music!!

We have fired off our Funny Car a couple times out in the street on the stands. But we will door to door and lets the neighbors know.

I'll light mine off between 10am and 12 noon, then 3 pm- 5pm but not on Sundays. Neighbors don't mind. Only once did I fire up early on a Saturday as payback to the neighbor who was playing his Head Banger Rhapsody on 10 at 2 am. Set off a couple car alarms but our neighborhood concerts are much lower key since.

Neither will we if you don't post a video.

When I light mine in the driveway a patrol car or Helo shows up. I only warn the neighbors on my immediate street though.:D

The other neighbors will be good with it. When I get the '31 done it'll be running 18" Kooks race mufflers on the street, so he'll have a near daily reminder.

Finally got the Canyon lit off for a few brief moments. No fuel in the tanks, wanted to get it lit before the last fuel system check and filling the tanks. I CAN tell this'll be a beast.... got a ton of compression and sounds healthy as hell. There's a reason it smelled like race fuel in the tanks even after all these years. I'll be bringing some 103 back from the Shack this weekend to get it dialed in and get it wet. :thumbsup

Spent a couple days trying to fire it, but it became apparent the engine isn't happy. Cranked REALLY slow even with the plugs out, so I'm betting it has bearing issues. Out it came this morning.....

The rebuild should have involved several turns by hand to see if their was friction caused by bearing interference. I have seen engines blown up in the boat because of poor water management to the headers.....hope that didn't happen to yours. Distributor installed backwards plays a huge roll...water enters the cylinders and hydraulic damage happens in seconds. Bends and breaks shit and its game over. Start over on the rebuild. Seen it happen a couple of times.

Could be because it last ran in '94, or maybe it last ran in '94 because it spun a bearing. We'll see tomorrow......

I think I used up all my good luck for the year. The engine was cranking slow and started making a slight "clunking" sound as I cranked it. It was really hard to crank which at the time I wrote off to high compression. I'll try to find numbers on the piston to help determine the CR, but it ain't 8 to 1. :eek
There's no real damage from the nut, so I'll clean it up, throw some new gaskets at it and fire it up. :thumbsup nut.jpg

Sent the heads to PBE to be checked out. Other than 20 year old grease they were in good condition but needed a little love. Clean them up, new seals and lap them in (just to be safe). Pick them up tomorrow, reassemble the engine and drop it back in. Hopefully I have race fuel exhaust in my immediate future.

My three guess
Door 1. 12.5 -1
Door 2. 13.1
Door 3. 14.5 -1

The bad news is that top ring groove has the top ring in a pinch,, or worse.

Close as I can tell it's door #1. With the 118cc chambers, it would come in at 12.2:1. May need a second bottle of octane booster....

It was a couple thousands tight, but cleaned up easily. No cracks or anything else that concerns me.... I'll run it and see.

Got the heads back (couple minor issues but they're good now), put the piston back in and cleaned out the pan. All SORTS of nastiness in there over 20 years. :eek Found a couple other things that needed to be addressed, so it was a good thing it came out and apart.
Pan and motor plates back go on tomorrow, should be dropping it back in and firing it this weekend :party2:

Almost have the engine re-assembled but won't be able to fire it for a few days. After installing the lifters I started checking and cleaning the pushrods. There were only a few left and I noticed one looked different. After trying to blow it out I noticed one end didn't have an oil hole. Glad I caught it now, so tomorrow the engine goes back in and will have to wait for a replacement. :finger

He's not going to like it after work either! Just running off the fuel in the bowls and isn't near as loud in the video as real life.

I've been doing a bunch of little things at once (depending on what parts show up when). Re-wire the trailer, all new lights, new tires, re-pack all the hubs, get the engine torn down, re-assembled and installed. Down to just a couple things left..... replace the wood in the passenger seat, and while the seats are out, pull the tanks to clean them out. That'll wait another week since it's time to take the 21 out this weekend for a little river time.
Still trying to pick the right starter since (as you can hear in the video) it cranks real slow. This starter doesn't like 12:1 very much.

Hear how slow that cranked? Put in a new starter good for up to 16:1 motors, but needed a little "modifying" to work in a tunnel. This sucker cranks FAST now, so hopefully the flooding issues are gone. Minor fuel leak fixed, just sealing up a few bolts and transom plates. Mount the license plate light, mount a running light. By Sunday I should be 99% there......
