Wife and I planned a 10 trip up to Golden Shores, on the agenda was, getting the place we're buying from my Mom into Escrow, and starting to do some work on the place, putting a couple hundred miles on the Speed, and get a little last trip out on the Toon.
Well, weather turned out to be pretty much hot as balls all week, so that thru the Speed miles in the trash.....
We got the house into a 15 day escrow, as we are paying cash, and waiving some stuff since she's just bought it a few years ago. We started furnishing it, and trying to get some things they way we want them. Also had a contractor come by to talk about making the Master bigger, and moving the master bath, as it's on the opposite end of the room as it should be. We'd want the Master to face the nice view, yes there are views in Golden Shores, LOL, and the future pool we are putting in. In addition we had the same contractor look at our trailer we've had there for 22 years. We're giving it to our kids, and they're having a Baby, so we want to fix some stuff for them, as well as put in a new AC/Heatpump.

We got a little boating in, and it was a perfect day, got the Tri-toon up to its fastest speed so far.

Decided on Friday, that I really needed to do a decent ride rather than just quick little runs in Speed. We opted for Oatman since Bunker Bar doesn't open till noon, and it was supposed to be 105 that day. Had a killer ride, weather was great on the way there, but hot as F on the way back. We got back to the house, and I wasn't quite done since the car is so much fun, so we jumped back in and headed to Topock 66 go sit in the pool. All in all, it was about a 70 mile ride. Also met and hung out with Jeff Howe, and his wife from Howe power steering, turns out he has a place in GS .

We left the pool, and headed home to throw some Rib Eyes on my little Traeger, and that's where the day took a turn for the worse. I pulled the steaks off, and turned the Traeger off, and went inside to eat. While fixing our plates, the living room lights went off, and I could smell, what I thought was an electrical fire. I snooped around the light switch, and went out front. Nothing there.......Then I opened up the back patio door, and discovered the entire back patio filled with smoke, looked to my left, and outside bar where the traeger was sitting was totally engulfed in flames!! I through the glass of water that was in my hand on it, and yelled for the wife to grab something to put water in. Then I ran to the garage, and grabbed the extinguisher off the back of the Speed car that was in the front garage, I got the back wall out, but I could see smolders going on behind the bamboo. I grabbed the hose to keep it wet and cool it off while my wife called the FD. I was afraid that maybe we got some ambers into the attic space. They showed up, and with their IR gun, they could see a hot spot, and we decided to bust out the drywall on the ceiling to make sure everything was out. Luckily it was, and the only real damage was 2 sheets of drywall, and the "fake" wall that was put in for the outside bar. In case anyone is wondering, the fake wall was covered in bamboo, and there was a Tiki bar, that appears to be what lit up from the Traeger somehow.
What a way to spend your first weekend in a house you haven't even closed escrow on.....I started working on fixing it, got the rear fake wall repaired, and skinned it in metal, instead of bamboo, thru the Traeger in the trash, fixed the plumbing and electrical, and my friend is over there right now doing the drywall and texture and paint.

After that scare, we had a few more days to relax and decompress from almost burning my Mom's house down. anyways, here's some pics of our new place in GS. I didn't get any good pictures off the back, or the 50x50 shop.

Good thing you were paying attention… 15-20 minutes later your house could if been really bad…

other than that little excitement

Looks like a great time!

Can’t go wrong w/ rib-eyes !

How do you like the Speed car?

was it heating up on you? No windshield helps….

The Speed is great, with the windshield removed, it didn't get hot at all, even in 105 degrees.

Actually, friends that were at the bar, got wind of the situation, and rather than ask if everything was OK, I got a "Can I get my steaks medium rare, not well done"
I appreciated the humor.

Glad you still got to have some fun. Why do you think it went up? Electrical or grease fire?

I have no clue, but while we were there, we heard of 3 other people who have had their Traegers catch fire, one was a fireman, a friend, who had his neighbors catching fire on his ring camera, and Jeff Howe's son in law said his caught fire too, and he worked for Traeger.

I know you have to clean them occasionally.. I'd guess if a grease fire started in it.. it would just go up as there is a bunch of fuel right there.

I have only had mine about 8 months.

You gotta clean the ash out of them every so often otherwise you'll have a "flare up". If it's a bad one, the flames can blow back into your hopper and cause big problems. Every time I open a fresh bag of pellets, I bust out the shop vac and clean out the ash.

Good info, but that thing is in the trash now, I never really liked it anyway, and now I don't have to carry it around in the MoHo anymore....

We love our Trager but only use it for long cooks because before every single cook we vacuum it out and put fresh tinfoil on the drip tray. It only takes 5 minutes since we bought a dedicated 1 gallon shopvac but it is still a P.I.T.A.
