WELCOME TO RIVER DAVES PLACE

Multi-Tool (oscillating tool) do you have one? How about this DeWalt 4 ½" circular saw?

Do you like it? What do you use it for?

I have a lot of tools but I've never owned or used a Multi-Tool/oscillating tool. The pics all show multiple uses but I see mostly cutting sheet rock, baseboards, tile work - stuff I rarely do.

Can it be used to cut wood in a straight line? I need to enlarge a cabinet opening (re: electrical thread) - will it cut cleanly through oak? (I doubt it which is why I'm asking).

I've been looking at buying one of these as I know it'll do the job but damned if Home Depot isn't out now...looks like a great product - one that Milwaukee (my preference) doesn't seem to make...

I’ve burned up a few multi tools!

talked to a buddy in Havasu he said he has had his Fein Multi tool for 15 years and it just works every time he reaches for it !!
next one I get will be the Fein

If you’re talking about a Face Frame on a cabinet, yes it will cut it. Also depends on the blade.

The Multi tool is a more precise cut, you can see the area your cutting because your hand is back behind the cutting blade & there are no guards or plates to get in the way.

No experience w/ the dewalt saw you posted

I have an older corded version (don't remember the brand) for very oddball things like that. The one I have has a flat face to the blade. I needed to cut tight to a baseboard under a cabinet to redo some flooring. At this point the oscillating cutters didn't exist like they do now. It worked beautifully for the 6 feet I needed to cut. I think I've used it two or thee times since.

long and short, if you need it, you need it.

How much cutting are you doing? The oscillating cutters are surprisingly good with a nice sharp blade. probably more useful in the long run than the above saw. Honestly I would go that route these days. Then again I have both at this point. 😅

I have it. Use for installing cabinets. It's in one of my cabinet install pack outs. I have 5 of the 6-1/2" Dewalt circular Saws. We use all the time. This one is not kept in the truck. It cuts out electrical openings in the cabinets nicely. Just have tp use a shim to hold the guard open. I use the multi-tool to finish of the cuts.

Only issue with Fein is they keep changing their cutters to proprietary. Meaning you have to buy their brand cutters, at which they are stupid expensive.

They are good for very few things, but there is nothing better for those very few things.

I had an OG Fein…then sold it and got a DeWalt 20V…I prefer the variable speed trigger.

Yes I own 4 of them. Fien is my favorite but corded and I only grab it for bigger jobs. Have a Milwaukee and dewalt cordless as well. Milwaukee is the least powerful but is the smallest for tight spots. No problem going through 3/4 oak on the fien or dewalt.

And I have the small circular saw as well. Works good for out of position cuts.

As far as multi-tool. I have the porter cable one above in one truck. Makita corded. And 4 of the 20v Dewalt. They get used way more often than the 20V saw you posted. Have 1 in each rig and 1 in my cabinet install pack away. Order the blades 25-50 at a time from Amazon for a fraction of the price of lowes and home depot.

I have had a couple. They are quiet handy for precise cuts. I have Ryobi stuff for home use and have one of their older multi-tools that utilizes an interchangeable head. It's really nice cause the rigid heads for on it as well so I have a couple of different heads for the same tool (90 degree impact driver, sander, etc).

Bought a Fein back before everyone else started to copy them. Always finding a use for it.

I have a lot of tools. The multi tool is great for tight spots that you typically can’t get to. With more control than a sawzall. Will it cut like a circular saw? Hell no but it is about th 5th tool I bought when setting up in Havasu. 👍

Multi-tool is great for cutting out some thinset under tile you set the previous day and you forgot to install clips. Not to mention door jambs and other casing

Bought a cheap corded one and it’s quickly becoming a favorite tool for any cut in tight areas. It’s like cutting butter with a good blade. Very controlled cuts with minimal saw dust flying around compared to other saws.
