I have CT scans every quarter and MRI's annually. Due to my cancer becoming metastatic, I need neck, chest, abdomen and pelvis with and without contrast. That's 2.5 hours in the tube. My shoulders hit the side of the chamber the entire time and I have a plate and screws in my pelvis to stabilize my spine so that starts to hurt . I hate it!!!!!!!!!! I take 2 lorazepam but now, that doesn't cut it. I'm scheduled for my next one in March and they're going to try the 2 lorazepam's plus oxycodone.
Hope it works.

I lived with a fatty lump on my chest for maybe 30 years, I saw my doctor. It was called a "Lipoma", a fatty lump. No MRI, the doctor made an incision and cut it out. It was like an egg yolk, and it fell on the ground. lol.. Glad it's gone.
That’s exactly what mine was diagnosed as both times. Doctor last week said they saw some fluid in or around it that they wanted a better look at.

Oh, the thing that freaked me the F' out...
I had one a long time ago, while really f'krd up. It was one "with and without contrast". They plug you with an IV before shoving you in the torpedo tube. Do an MRI, stop and reset the machine, then inject the contrast stuff.

Now, the dye packs, are seemingly pulled out of the fridge. You're in a torpedo tube, running warm. The dillhole pushing in the contrast didn't tell me about anything, or warn me he was starting.

At the time, I was suffering some partial paralysis of my left side. The IV was in my left arm. Suddenly, I felt my left arm go cold, quickly followed by my whole left side. I freaked out, thinking I was having a stroke or something. The nurse quickly explained, and tried to calm me down. That was creepy.
Had one of those last year but it was warm, almost too warm. Smoke show nurse says it's going to feel like you are peeing yourself but don't worry, it did feel like I was, nice to find that I hadn't. :D

Some of y’all have posted about the great sound system or the good headsets. This I don’t understand, because every time I’ve had a MRI, they gave me the cheapest headset known to man, and that’s at several different facilities. The terrible sounding music is just another annoyance to go along with being trapped in a metal tube with somebody beating a hammer on it.

I can tolerate it without any drugs, but my last MRI was open, and I preferred that.

I’ve had several over the years and even though I’m mildly claustrophobic I managed to get through them. Not comfortable but not exactly a panic situation either.

I have had one for my lower back. I gotta be honest, it sucked being a bigger guy. Your brain starts fucking with you. They tell you not to move and I remember the heat on my lower back was intense. It seemed way too long in my opinion and I was glad to get the F out once it was over. The headphones sucked. Like mentioned, it was more of a distraction that made it worse.

Nothing tops it though when I had this Heart MRI thing done years ago with Dye, Nuclear I think its called and they told me if I even moved my fingers, it would have to start over. Its more of a mental thing, I was so antsy, its crazy.

It was on my neck, they had to put a cage type thing over my face and when I exhaled my breath came back into my face and I started getting anxiety and it went downhill from there.

This all started in the fire academy during confined space training. We had to crawl through a 50' long 18" dia concrete pipe. 3 guys in the pipe so at some point everyone is in the middle. While I was in the middle the guy in front lost his shit causing the guy behind me to lose his shit. It took about 10min for the instructors to talk the lead guy down and start moving all the while I'm face down with my breath coming back into my face. I went in fine and came out claustrophobic. It's also the reason why I can't wear masks.
Nightmare Fuel. I watch some of these cave guys on youtube in those tight spaces. No WAY. I cant imagine when you have freak outs happening around you how to keep calm.

Don't listen to these guys...

It's no big deal. I'm sure you've survived worse, than having to lay still for a few minutes, out of your entire life. 🙄

You'll back here saying "WTF was all the hype about" before you know it.

Just think about getting a big ol double double, as soon as you get out!

Oh, wait...

If you do not like the concept they can give you a Xanax. I had an mri about a year ago and it was right AF. It wasn't fun but it wasn't terrible.

I didn't think that I was claustrophobic... and then I read this.

One Xanax does nothing.

Have the tech roll you in and roll out a few times so you can see how quick it is.
It's the lack of knowing the escape that fucks with you. Once you see and feel whats it's like you realize it's just laying still.

Also try and set your cell up and video it, so if you do go nuts you can post it here 😁

My last MRI was for my shoulder, torn Rotator Cuff. I showed up on time but my Doctor was running behind that day. They told me there's a Starbucks across the street and grab something to eat or drink. Stupid me, I order an Americano.. By the time I walked back to the Doctors office I was pretty amped up from all the caffeine and i was sent me in to the MRI machine, they injected the dye in my shoulder then placed me in the machine, I was jittery from the Coffee. Dang... And I thought to myself don't F it up, sit still and don't move. And then you think about what it took to even get an MRI done. Doctors appointment, Referral, See the specialist and wait for an approval for an MRI, then get the MRI. It's a long road and I sat very still for 40 mins with that machine almost touching my nose.

I’ll back track just a bit.
I didn’t realize some you were there for 45 minutes
That might change my thought a little bit
I’ve only been a few minutes. Breath. Hold. Exhale. Repeat.

Have had multiple, no problem would actually fall asleep. Got an ear infection 3 or so years back, I can't even think about being in 1 now. I've quit the last 3 within 2 minutes. Get what ever sedation you you can and mix several shots in, with a blackout blindfold.
That's just me. Hopefully it might work for me again.

I have one every year for the head, neck and spine. It’s not that bad, takes roughly 30 - 45 minutes. I take a Lorazepam before going in and I can pretty much fall asleep. earplugs help with the noise.

no big deal, it’s noisy but so are jack hammers, grinders, drills, concrete truck, pumps etc and all that shit is more likely to hurt me

What you had was probably a CT scan. The breath, hold exhale is how they work. For an MRI, you go in the tube and lay still the entire time. MRI's are more accurate and image quality is better.

Good luck. I'm fairly claustrophobic and was worried when I had to get one. Ended up ok, as the crew that did mine had headphones and even took my request for tunes as they had Spotify hooked up. Music helped occupy the mind and pass time.

Wish me luck. Geeting shoved into the tube tomorrow morning.
Had both shoulders done last week.

No issue at all with the size of the tube or the noise. The place i went to used ear plus and ear muffs but no music.

Left shoulder was easy but the way they positioned my right arm with the tear it hurt like a SOB. Worst part is not knowing when it was over it hurt so bad being forced in the position i seriously almost tapped. It just seemed to never end and right when I couldn't take it anymore they pulled me out.

Found tears in both shoulders as well as some natural shoulder issues that cause impingement and some arthritis in the collar bone. Surgery for the first shoulder and other fixes in a month.

I had one to check my Prostate. My head was just about out of the tube and I could look around. Not the least bit claustrophobic. They gave me muffs but no music. The machine sounded like Techno music and I passed my time remembering the cycles til I could predict when it would end. 45 minutes seemed to drag on and on.............

I didn’t read every response just ask for headphones and ask them to put what ever music loud there will be loud ass tapping and machine noise that bugs most people. I’ve had roughly 13 MRIs that I can recall. If your sensitive to small areas let them know and it helps some to keep there eyes closed throughout it.

Good luck

Well, I just had my latest MRI done on Monday. 2 procedures with and without contrast. Was in the tube for 2 hours. This time my oncologist prescribed 1 lorazepam and one 5mg oxycodone. It really worked. Anxiety was down and the oxy took care of the plate and screw pain that's stabilizing my pelvis.
Next MRI, April 21.

Had one last week at San Antonio Hospital in Upland. Spinal stenosis, lumbar, blah blah blah. Was in for about a half hour. Earplugs and headphones with choice of music. I think I might’ve dozed off for a little bit, pain meds might’ve been involved.

They are super easy. I have cancer for the past 4 years taking multiple MRI’s every month. Ask for the larger machine which gives you more space. Also ask for music they let you pick the station

Who’s had one?

I’ve had this fatty lump on my sternum area for 10-15 years. Wife all of a sudden said she thought it was bigger.
I got an ultrasound the other day and my new doc said I should get an MRI to decide direction of care.
My wife has had a few and she wasn’t too thrilled with the process. Claustrophobia being the biggest concern.
I YouTubed MRI and it didn’t look that bad.

First hand experience would be appreciated.
Several. Some in the tube, and a few in the "U" shaped version. It's really not that bad, just close your eyes and relax.

But... make sure you are in an MRI machine where the microphone works and know where the panic button was. The last time I was in one the dude forgot to turn on the fan, so it got real fucking hot and then I felt sharp heat and stabbing pain between my thighs. Turns out my skin was touching and my inner thighs were completing the arch which left me with burn marks. luckily it wasn't arching a bit higher or I would have shot out of that tube into the wall without regret. I was yelling for the guy to stop and the only time he heard me was between cycles. Luckily I have a pretty good pain tolerance and am not claustrophobic so it didn't go too terrible. The doc was freaked out and very apologetic... But I'm sure you'll be fine. 🤣 👍
