Who’s had one?

I’ve had this fatty lump on my sternum area for 10-15 years. Wife all of a sudden said she thought it was bigger.
I got an ultrasound the other day and my new doc said I should get an MRI to decide direction of care.
My wife has had a few and she wasn’t too thrilled with the process. Claustrophobia being the biggest concern.
I YouTubed MRI and it didn’t look that bad.

First hand experience would be appreciated.

Ive had prob 10. Just had one a month ago if my neck, so head 1st.

It's not bad. I close my eyes as the slide me in. If you never open then you don't know your inside.

The crazy part are the noises. It's real loud .

I had one last year on my neck/spine. Didn't hurt, laying still was hard with pinched nerves. The noises started to fuck with me after what seemed like an hour, not sure how long I was in and I'm not usually claustrophobic, but I was relieved when it was over. I took a nap later as I felt funny

Wife has had many on her head. She does the towel and they typically give her some med to calm her down just a bit. Hope that it all goes well for you. 👍

But.
You lay on a table. They slide you in a tube for a few seconds and then out. 🤷

That said. I’m strange. I’d watch the nurse shoot me with novacaine and then watch them stitch me up.

I watch them take my blood. Love that color.
Like I said. I’m strange. Lol

Endured one for my back a few years ago. Definitely have issues with claustrophobia, so I asked if they would slide me in feet first. I lived, but not a fan at all. Mentally, I walked down my favorite road in my happy place and that helped a lot.

Had one done on my wrist 20 years ago. It helped that my stupid ass just figured I’d put my arm in only. When I got there they let me know the good news. No time to worry, just jump in and get it done. Wasn’t too bad at all.

Had one done about 18mo ago, got in and had to get the fuck out. I had to go back a week later with a Xanax on board
Really? Damn that sucks. I think my last one was about 15 minutes total. One scan was 7 minutes, that one felt like 45 minutes.

You'll be fine. It's only nerve wracking because you haven't done it.
Eyes closed going in. Leave them shut. Try and nap. Works everytime for me.
Plus tell the tech you haven't done it and your wife says it sucks. That will let them know to keep communication going. You can hear them inside perfectly clear and they can hear you.

Also avoid Chipotle 24 hours prior.

… 5 mg of Valium and you will be fine… I suppose Xanax is the go to drug these days… But in my opinion, Valium does a better job of reducing anxiety… I probably have had more MRIs than I can count…🤷🏽‍♀️

It was on my neck, they had to put a cage type thing over my face and when I exhaled my breath came back into my face and I started getting anxiety and it went downhill from there.

This all started in the fire academy during confined space training. We had to crawl through a 50' long 18" dia concrete pipe. 3 guys in the pipe so at some point everyone is in the middle. While I was in the middle the guy in front lost his shit causing the guy behind me to lose his shit. It took about 10min for the instructors to talk the lead guy down and start moving all the while I'm face down with my breath coming back into my face. I went in fine and came out claustrophobic. It's also the reason why I can't wear masks.

I have had at least 25 over the years for various tests / injuries. I did two functional MRIs at the VA for a study I was in that were 4 hours each (those sucked). If you are claustrophobic, it might bother you. I just tell myself that I could get out of the tube if I really had to. After being stuck in an HBO chamber MRIs don't bother me anymore. Good luck!

That will do it! I had the cage thing on my face on my last one. That part did kinda suck.

My chest/heart mri's were tougher cause your deeper in the machine.

I had one while in icu.. they wheeled me to the room. I puked from pain meds. Took a deep breath and went it. At that point I figured getting it over with was better than being dead. Lpl

It was not fun being stuck in the pipe listening to 2 guys panic, I kept my cool as I didn't need to add to the issue at hand but it definitely changed me. There is no way I could get through that pipe now even if I was the only one going through it.

Ask for anyone open mri
I did one of these 20 years ago. I am surprised they are not more prevalent now.
The old open MRI are very low field, and don't have good image quality. I only know of one that is manufactured today. At the same time, regular MRI systems got a much larger and shorter bore, so open isn't really needed anymore.

How does a full grown man fit in an 18 inch diameter pipe apparently my math doesn’t work correctly. 😳

It's tight, arms above your head and you can fit, we had a pro baseball catcher (back when blocking the plate was allowed, linebacker size) in our academy and he fit, a little tighter than anyone else but he made it.

I think I just have to shake my head and walk away, even when I was younger I don’t think I’d fit in an 18 inch pipe🤣

This ^^^

It's no big fucking deal!!! 🤣

You lay down and relax. WTF is so freaking hard about that???

Is it loud in there? Hell yeah it is. But so is a boat at 70mph. They give you ear protection for the noise.

I've had two done so far...

It's no big deal at all. You got this. 👍🏼

It's not a few seconds, my MRI was 45min, i made it about 2min. I'm not afraid of much, I have a healthy respect (borderline fear) of snakes and heights don't bother me I however will not jump out of a plane🖕🤣. I've started IV's on myself, lol.

I've had a bunch. Noise isn't bad, but I'm near deaf I guess. I'm not claustrophobic though. My wife on the other hand, she needs pills.

I'm not claustrophobic, but the thought of a big quake while I was getting it was in the back of my mind each time. I just convinced myself that I was in the safest spot and someone would get me out eventually. But no big deal.

Oh, the thing that freaked me the F' out...
I had one a long time ago, while really f'krd up. It was one "with and without contrast". They plug you with an IV before shoving you in the torpedo tube. Do an MRI, stop and reset the machine, then inject the contrast stuff.

Now, the dye packs, are seemingly pulled out of the fridge. You're in a torpedo tube, running warm. The dillhole pushing in the contrast didn't tell me about anything, or warn me he was starting.

At the time, I was suffering some partial paralysis of my left side. The IV was in my left arm. Suddenly, I felt my left arm go cold, quickly followed by my whole left side. I freaked out, thinking I was having a stroke or something. The nurse quickly explained, and tried to calm me down. That was creepy.

I've lost count.

My provider has a machine with a larger opening, and I always request it. The increased bore makes it less constrictive. The imaging for my neck and spine takes over 30 minutes.
.., 30 minutes is about how long mine have taken…🤷🏽‍♀️

I have had more than I would like to recall.

The first machine they got up in our area I could tolerate.
The one they got about 15 years ago no stinking way.
I am a big guy and I did fine as they were slipping me in until the damn thing started to try to squeeze my shoulders into my ears, starting at my elbows.
I told them to get me out...the tech started with the "you will be fine line" and I told him to get me out or I would rip the damn machine off the wall...
He got me out.
They have open systems and that is the way I go now. Gotta drive to Sacto, but oh well. I will be getting one on my left knee soon.

Music helps. Head set to muffle the noise, not so much. I have had several. The team running the show normally have a good selection of tunes for you and a good headset to listen. Not my thing at all, but I did fine.

I've had a few MRI's, they have never allowed a headset of any kind while in there. hmmm...

I lived with a fatty lump on my chest for maybe 30 years, I saw my doctor. It was called a "Lipoma", a fatty lump. No MRI, the doctor made an incision and cut it out. It was like an egg yolk, and it fell on the ground. lol.. Glad it's gone.

I try to concentrate on the noise, sometimes there's some wild rhythms.
