My movers told me what my company paid and I about shit.
I've had a few friends move out of state recently and hired movers...In both cases, they would have been significant money ahead simply putting the important shit in a couple personal cars/trucks/SUVs, throwing the rest of it in the trash and buying all new at the new house. Just something to consider.

We got a quote for our move, we would box everything and they load, unload. After the quote I decided to get some uhauls instead.

My in laws basically did this. They got one storage pod out their basics in there the rest got sold.

When we moved to az we got a big uhaul packed it too to bottom front to back. Also took a couple things ahead of time to leave at in-laws too. And I left my tool box and jet ski at my moms got them later when I came down.

Get some uhaul U boxes, hire movers to load and unload. Unless you want to spend a shitload, thats the way to do it.

This. I spent 5 figures moving our stuff from AZ out here, and we ended up replacing it within several years of moving because none of it "matches the house". What a fucking waste. What we kept could have gone in a 15 foot Uhaul.

I have used PODS and then hire local movers to pack and unpack. Had really good luck with Two Men and a Truck movers over the years.

what ever you do read your contract, 2 0r 3 times, and make sure you have everything stated as you want it !!!!!!! Even then they will try to over charge upon delivery with all kinds of BS

All these horror stories I feel like a shipping container or pods would be the easiest.

Your cheaper options are likely: PODS, ABF U-Pack, U-Haul U-Box. We and my mother in law used ABF U-Pack. I know with U-Box and U-Pack you can hire movers on both ends right from the respective websites.

And, yes, leave behind anything at or near its service life. Now is the time to get rid of all that "I might use it one day" crap. Lol. Good luck and congrats on the move out of CA!

I would buy an enclosed trailer and do it yourself. Sell the trailer when the move is complete. I would also try to rent the sold house back for a couple of weeks to allow you the time to move.

This!!!!

I had a friend who just moved to the east coast. They had an agreement fully done. The sleezy mover that showed tried this - After the truck was loaded. After my buddy told him to pound sand he pulled out a blank contract and started filling it out the way "he" wanted it. My buddy told him absolutely no again and the guy then was trying to hold his stuff hostage on signing the "new" contract. My Buddy then had corporate on the phone and back and forth multiple times, All this is at the end of a 12 hour day loading. The irony was that he was scheduled for two trucks and they brought one of the oversized ones and managed to get everything in it. Meaning they were using only one crew and truck to run across country. They were saving a ton of money already then wanted to upcharge him for everything in sight for another $10K beyond the two truck price.

As a final stab, they stole a bunch of stuff. He was there for both the loading and unloading and they still managed to steal things left and right. They truly are pros at theft.

That whole industry is about as honest as the tow truck industry! I am sure there are honest ones in both but they are truly the exception not the rule.

There isn’t many industries more crooked than the moving industry. Between the employees stealing your belongings and the corporate side stealing your wallet and holding your shit ransom.

When we moved to Utah earlier this year I did it in 4 trips.

First one was a truck (pickup truck) load of odd shaped items
Second was my toyhauler with rzr and as much shit I could fit in the truck and trailer (garage stuff)
3rd was my flatbed trailer with golf cart, tires (sand and dirt rzr tires) and bbq and shit like that
4th was the final biggest U-Haul truck I could get and filled it and some.

We sold all of our couches, tables. Kept 2 mattress of 4.
Sold washer dryer and fridges as new house came with them.

Kinda started over, 6 months later I am down to like 3-4 boxes of stuff

Moving prices are still higher than boat prices during Covid prices.

If it doesn't fit in your car or have extreme personal attachment use this as an excuse to donate or give away and buy new. Don't move couches, kitchen tables, bedroom furniture, ect. You will be money ahead.

I got a quote to move my father-in-laws belongings after he passed a few years ago. Shocking....

Ended up buying an enclosed trailer for the sentimental stuff and then listed everything else on Facebook market place for pennies on the dollar. Just enough for someone not to flake and think they were getting a steal. House was empty in less than 12 hours by marketplace vultures.

I will go against the grain and say don’t sell all of your stuff if you like it and it will “work” in the new house. You’re going to get pennies on the dollar on the sale and spend much more than you spent on the orginal items. Yes, it’s a pain in the ass to move, but imagine spending hours online and in stores with your wife and then thousands upon thousands on new furniture. I don’t know about you, but it was a fucking nightmare for me.

Buy a 40 foot container. I will help you move it super reasonable and then sell the Container and you just paid almost nothing to move.
Its loading a container is the issue... unless its already on a chassis. Not like putting that thing on tilt and sucking it up on a trailer.

This was my thoughts for moving next time. I have a courtyard I could dump them in to load over a little time.

The challenge is how to get them off the ground and onto a truck once loaded?
Any solutions?

I have landoll’s. It’s easy actually.
Tell me more....

If I can find another job in the reasonable future out of state, I would be moving. The wife is 100% remote already.

Edit; I know what a Landoll is.... :)

If the day comes that we ever move again... I would have an estate sale and sell off 80-90% of what we own and just buy new crap for the new place.
