Does anyone know what it would run to have a 502MPI rebuilt? It's a '98 and I am thinking the rings are bad. Under 100 comp. in 2 cyl. and goes through 1 quart of oil if I use a tank of gas running around 4K-4500 RPM.:headscratch:

The quart of oil situation was normal for my 502 in a jet!!! Sucks!

How many hours do you have on it. I have a 98' 502 with a little over 500 hours. Kinda wondering myself.

The rings in the 502's were low tension, replace them with a set of standard tension rings.

A good rebuild with rings bearings and valve job is what I would do

I am right around 450 hours. The motor runs hard still. No problem out of the hole and I am running 4900rpm WOT.

If it was my engine and I had it tore down that far and was going to keep it for a while, I would replace rod bolts, rocker studs, valves, valve springs, timing set, and maybe a few other things as well. Cheap insurance. ;)

i dunno about chebbys, but on ford engines, that meant they were thinner rings. you would have to have all the pistons machined, to put the thicker rings in them. Prolly cheaper to just buy new pistons, unless they are special or sumpthin.

maybe someone else knows for sure??

"Low tension rings" refers to the oil rings, only. They are designed to limit friction and use cylinder pressure to seal.

Ya me too. Metric rings that only come on the 502. JE made the pistons.

Ford quit doin it to. Same problem. Way too much oil being used!

They make standard tension replacement rings
The pistons are forged and made by JE
