Most expensive wedding I ever went to was when my friend Paul got married at Disneyland back in the 80's. Each attendee got a one night stay at the Disney hotel and a pass to Disneyland. He had Mickey and Minney Mouse in his wedding which they no longer do. He spent over $100K back then and they are still married.

I had a co-worker back in the day that married the daughter of the somewhat local large Bud beer distributor. They had a lavish wedding with 12 standing up on each side and had at least 6 Ushers to boot. Reception was off the hook and figure over 1k attended.

I can top that. We filled out a 5 X 7 card at the Collin County courthouse annex, the clerk stamped it, and I handed over $15.

Pretty good deal for 35 years of good times.

It’s been said Justin Bieber was paid $10 million to preform. Katy Perry, Backstreet Boys and a few other were supposedly paid between $1-3 million each to perform on the cruise or at one of the several pre wedding parties. I’m sure the celebrities are also getting paid to attend the wedding.

My mother in law is quite into the finer things in life. When I asked my father in law for my wife's hand he asked what kind of wedding I wanted. I told him that that was much more dependent on his daughter but I would be fine with a judge and drinks afterwards. His response was that the wedding would need to be up to his wides standards. My response was that if I was paying for it was going to be acceptable to me and that was it. His one word response was "understood." They ended up offering to pay for most of the wedding lol.

Our $15 trip to the courthouse may be a bit out there on frugality, but throwing away money on the scale some people reach amazes me.

I got married April of 2023. I never wanted a big wedding, but the Lebanese side of my family did. I told my dad we would just get married at a courthouse and he was so upset, he didn’t talk to me for a week. This was what he wanted to spend his money on. I agreed and I did have the time of life that weekend, but I cringe at the money spent on 3 days.

I had an initial budget set aside for what I thought it could cost… it was double that by the time the wedding happened. The week of the wedding had a lot of unexpected costs. Open bars were pricey for the entire weekend. Videographers, transportation for guests since we were really concerned about the drinking and people driving on a narrow windy road for 10 miles after the wedding. It adds up quickly. Plus, a 20% tip to every service hired is something I didn’t budget in for initially. It can get out of hand pretty quickly.

I belong to the Newport Beach Elks. It's a Lodge on the water. Lots of LEO members that feel real good about tossing out the assholes. Water off a ducks back. Nice lodge as a result.

Cheap for members to rent the upstairs party room that over looks the Harbor for weddings and get cheap elks Prices at the bar. A pro kitchen available as part of the deal too.
A wedding cost 10 cents on the dollar compared to the Balboa Club or local hotels rooms,, and way better according to members that work at those locations.

I tell the kids in the family to go cheap on the weddings and save their money. I'm usually picking up the tab anyway. Doesn't have to be a lot of money spent to be nice.
Cheap dues, nice bennies.
