Check out this Caterpillar rail charging system for its electric prototype mine haul truck.

Damn, over 50 years of my life spent in the wide world of electrical construction, not even including the years growing up the child of a past President of the International Electrical Inspectors Association and co-author of the NEC --- and I didn't know jack-squat about this whole rabbit hole of the Power Infrastructure for electric mining. I recall we have a RDP member employed in this business way down-under, but I know almost nothing of what his job entails.

Started searching for and found a lot of pictures of various huge mining shovels and noticed something I'd never seen prior ------ high voltage (Well OK medium, depending on who yer chatting with 😁 ), black extension cords laying across the top of the dirt with obvious truck tracks across them. Those must be some bad-ass heavy duty cords. 👍

While digging my way down the rabbit hole and still just scratching the surface of this new to me dimension, I did find an article I am fairly familiar with.
The often nasty side effect of VFD's resulting in premature and increased bearing wear. Did numerous small projects adding sine wave filters and other reactors to large VFD's, mostly ones involved in fluid pumping.

OK, new day and once again I'm reminded of even now, how many things around me I know very little about, but the learning, does keep life interesting. 👍👍

Probably a dumb question, but the child in me is curious .... in the picture above, how do they build and tear down those cranes? They look like they are stacked on narrow square scaffolding? How do they raise and lower them? Sometimes they are taller than the building they are next to?

I've always wanted to ride the headache ball on a crane, evidently now a days that's frowned upon. Closest I got was a man basket at 250 feet in the air to drop us into an elevator core.

When I worked for CBI Na-Con I had that privilege many times, the highest was 180 feet.

First time I saw one of these was at a jobsite in Hollywood 10-12 years ago. Still impresses the hell out of me. Lots of engineering and math just to make it fold, let alone be of use when set, or go down the road. Really a modern marvel.

That's a good question. All terrain cranes get rented at an hour and daily rate. I think this might be different as it's a full taxi crane. I would say per job.
Been one setup at the 17 and I-40 for the past 4-5 weeks. Looks like a hotel or apartment building. Pretty ideally suited for something like that. No super heavy picks, just a crap load of them in a confined area.

They would have had to send someone up with a prybar to release my fingers. New meaning to "death grip" if I saw that happening :oops:

I had a rebar curtain come apart over my head once. The "Riggers" rigged it wrong and I was tied off to a wall form 30 feet in the air when it came apart. I was dodging #7 rebar as it was flying out of the sky with nowhere to go. If one of the chokers didn't wrap itself around a piece of vertical rebar I would not be here to tell the story. I was still an apprentice and chewed the guys asses for rigging it wrong, and then I got in trouble (always the apprentices fault) for their fuck up.

Now that I'm in a different role, when we have to do a technical pick, I personally rig everything, draw up a pick plan, and will not leave until everything is deemed safe.

The apprentices probably don't know how much they should appreciate that. Nobody wants to be the one who makes that dreaded call to a family :(
