Man I have not been this wore out in years.
Sunday afternoon my back was going off big time and Mom called said she thought she was getting the flu. I told her to call if she needed me and spent the night in my chair,never slept a wink.
She called at 7:15 Monday morning, and I listened to her for about 2 minutes and hauled ass up there.
She'd been throwing up all noght could not keep anything down, and now had chest pain. she is 79, and in better shape than lots of us, I suspect.
I just about carried her down the stairs to the truck and off we went to ER.
They did a bunch of tests, ad her blood work was all screwed up, liver enzymes and pancreas were wrong,and there was an indication she had "injured her heart", fighting through the pain in her abdomen.
She had her appendix out when she was a teenager, so they ruled that out.
Anyway, they decide to transport her off the hill to Mercy General in Sacramento to the heart center.
I grab Cindy from her office and we head for Sac.
About 4 yesterday afternoon they do an angiogram and finish up at about 7pm. The doc comes out and tells us that her heart is in pretty good shpae for someone 69 years old. I correct him and tell her she is 79 and he says "wow, we should all be so lucky". He says she simply wore herself out fighting the pain and her heart produced the enzyme associaed with a heart attack in the process.
Anyway, they are going to spend today getting her rehydrated and Wednesday she is going to have her gall bladder yanked out. At that point I had been awake for about 28 hours, and my back ws just going off. I didn't want to take any pain meds 'cause I wanted to stay awake.
So, as we are getting ready to come home she looks me in the eye and says;
"Jeff, if you and Cindy cancel your trip to Las Vegas for the race because of this I promise you I will never speak to you again. Do you understand me?
As a matter of fact, do not come down here tomorrow, you can come down on WEdnesday when I have the surgery, but I do not want to see you again until then. Is that clear?"
Mom is sorta stubborn, and can be a wee bit one way. I beleive every word she said.
So we have it worked out that when they let her come home on Friday or Saturday, my son Justin will go get her and bring her home. Since we live about 9 acres apart he can keep an eye on her and keep the woodstove cranking for her until we fly home on Monday.
If any of you guys have older parents who exhibit flu like symptoms, and then find they cannot keep even water down, then they may have past the point in the dehydration process where they can rehydrate themselves. The only way to rehydrate is via an IV, no IV they can die. If all of these sysmtoms are are present they may be fixing to see the surgeon for gall bladder removal.
My Mom is a major health nut and is really put out with the idea her gall baldder is bad, she sees it as a sign off too much fat in her diet, and the doc says, no, it is the fact that she is 79.
Anyways, the pain ths thing can cause is major, and obviously can impact the heart, so don't let your older parents screw around with it.
