Man I have not been this wore out in years.
Sunday afternoon my back was going off big time and Mom called said she thought she was getting the flu. I told her to call if she needed me and spent the night in my chair, never slept a wink.
She called at 7:15 Monday morning, and I listened to her for about 2 minutes and hauled ass up there.
She'd been throwing up all noght could not keep anything down, and now had chest pain. she is 79, and in better shape than lots of us, I suspect.
I just about carried her down the stairs to the truck and off we went to ER.
They did a bunch of tests, ad her blood work was all screwed up, liver enzymes and pancreas were wrong, and there was an indication she had "injured her heart", fighting through the pain in her abdomen.
She had her appendix out when she was a teenager, so they ruled that out.
Anyway, they decide to transport her off the hill to Mercy General in Sacramento to the heart center.
I grab Cindy from her office and we head for Sac.
About 4 yesterday afternoon they do an angiogram and finish up at about 7pm. The doc comes out and tells us that her heart is in pretty good shpae for someone 69 years old. I correct him and tell her she is 79 and he says "wow, we should all be so lucky". He says she simply wore herself out fighting the pain and her heart produced the enzyme associaed with a heart attack in the process.
Anyway, they are going to spend today getting her rehydrated and Wednesday she is going to have her gall bladder yanked out. At that point I had been awake for about 28 hours, and my back ws just going off. I didn't want to take any pain meds 'cause I wanted to stay awake.
So, as we are getting ready to come home she looks me in the eye and says;
"Jeff, if you and Cindy cancel your trip to Las Vegas for the race because of this I promise you I will never speak to you again. Do you understand me?
As a matter of fact, do not come down here tomorrow, you can come down on WEdnesday when I have the surgery, but I do not want to see you again until then. Is that clear?"
Mom is sorta stubborn, and can be a wee bit one way. I beleive every word she said.
So we have it worked out that when they let her come home on Friday or Saturday, my son Justin will go get her and bring her home. Since we live about 9 acres apart he can keep an eye on her and keep the woodstove cranking for her until we fly home on Monday.
If any of you guys have older parents who exhibit flu like symptoms, and then find they cannot keep even water down, then they may have past the point in the dehydration process where they can rehydrate themselves. The only way to rehydrate is via an IV, no IV they can die. If all of these sysmtoms are are present they may be fixing to see the surgeon for gall bladder removal.
My Mom is a major health nut and is really put out with the idea her gall baldder is bad, she sees it as a sign off too much fat in her diet, and the doc says, no, it is the fact that she is 79.
Anyways, the pain ths thing can cause is major, and obviously can impact the heart, so don't let your older parents screw around with it.

X2. My mom died unexpectedly at the age of 59. Always walked her to her car when she left our house. That night I didn't and it was the last time she was at the house.
Best of luck to you and your family.

Classic. I got a total visual of the stern talking to from ur mom to you. Glad to hear she's ok. I have yet to experience a loss of this magnitude. Not even sure how I'd act when one of my parents go. Again glad to hear ur mom is doing good. :thumbsup

Thanks everyone for the kinds words.
We lost my Dad when I was 22, some 30 years ago.
Mom has been the unshakeable rock of the family ever since, she is a strong, very loyal woman who lives only for her family.
Dave, you are right, a "character" is what her friends call her...
She has a lot of living left to do.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you, your mom and family!

Our mom will turn 84 on Thursday and acts like she is 65. She is the glue that keeps us together.

Thanks again everyone...
She is fully hydrated and is in better spirits today. She had a MRI for the first time in her life and got a raging headache from the "thump, thump, thump" in the donut. First time I have ever heard of that.
The surgery is scheduled for 4:pm tomorrow, which is the shitz for me.
The nurses in her unit say that this surgeon has a rep for coming in 2 hours early and said we sould be down there by 2. I am gonna get up in the morning and drive down and stay til 2ish and my sister will relieve me and call me when it is done.
Mom is still adamant about me going to Vegas, and renewed her threats about not speaking to me again should I leave tomorrow and reappear before next Monday night.
I have fought assholes all my life and can sweet talk just about anyone, but Mom is beyond my control. At 52, I still gotta honor her wishes.
Crazy, ain't it?

Sorry to hear this Jeff. On the other hand good news now that they know what the issue is.

I have been dealing with my parents for the last week.

My Dad collapsed at the surge-a-center after my Mom had her second cataract removed. Here we are a week later and my Dad has been through an episode of "House"

Started out as low blood pressure. Then Kidney issues. Then had a procedure where they electrically map the heart to identify and then fix an arrhythmia and since his heart is now at 35% efficiency they today implanted a defibrillator.

I could go on.

Good times:D

Looking forward to Parker this weekend:drnkfr

Wow Jeff sounds like you've got your hands full too.
I will feel much better when the surgery is done and she is in recovery.
Knowing the problem is fixed is going to be a big help, and knowing the angiogram showed her heart was in good shape was a huge relief.
By Thursday mid-morning I should be able to leave with a good degree of comfort. My son and sister can take it and handle it no problem from there.
I may even have a drink on the plane.

Well surgery was supposed to be at 9, then 11, then 2, they took her into preop and she told me to go that sis could handle it.
Gave her a kiss, before I left, she slipped me a piece of paper with some Keno numbers on it.
"Play these for me, a 5 spot for $10 okay?"
Sometimes she surprises even me.
Sis just called, she goes in at 6:20.....what a Chinese fire Drill.

wow, good luck to your Mom. Sounds Like my Grandma who I love to pieces. Still drives at 88 :grumble:, plays lotto and goes to church on a regular bases. Loves going to Santa Anita and Hollywood Park Horse races (taught me all i know about gambling at the races). Was on the high rollers club in Vegas at Harrah's (i think). And when My GF and I took her to dinner the other night she told me her 2 wishes before she dies is to "fly in a helicopter" and get a ride in my boat. LOL

So...when your Mom says she doesn't want to see you, I know just what you mean. She will probably feel 10x better knowing you're not there stressing out and instead keeping her in your prayers. Good luck to your mom and a speedy recovery. :thumbsup:thumbsup

GOOD NEWS!
She came through surgery with flying colors, I guess it only took about 30 minutes.
They left a tube in to do a endoscopy tomorrow to make sure they got all the bad stuff when they pulled the gall bladder, but the doc is pretty sure they did.
So, all is well.
I am going to have a wee drink, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT GANG!
and goodd thoughts out to all of you helping your folks...

I was away from my computer all day, so I didn't see what was going on with your Mom. I glad the surgery went well and that she is doing well.
