I’m in a similar situation and needing to replace a system in our two story house in SoCal. Our ducting system is crappy at best with no returns other than on the closet where the furnace/coil/fan is located downstairs. They system is a 10 seer and is about 30yrs old. I’m able to maintain good temps downstairs but temps upstairs are anywhere fro 4-8 degs hotter during the heat of the summer.

I’ve thrown around the idea of multi zone mini splits upstairs and downstairs. I could do cassettes upstairs and wall mounted downstairs.

I really like the idea of separating all the zones and being able to cool/heat each room individually. I know I’ll save tons of cash when running the AC.

One thing I’m worried about as far as energy usage is that the new mini splits would be heat pumps as well so heating in the winter will cost more. I won’t be using cheap natural gas but I’ll be using more electricity with the heat pumps to heat the house.

So many decisions to make!!! Sometimes I wish I wasn’t an engineer and could just make decisions based only from my heart of hearts and not my brain 😂😂

Well looking into this further I'm gonna go with the Mrcool Universal Series split system. Going to get the 4-5 ton unit (selectable tonnage) as the house will be about 2ksqft. Condenser and fan are DC inverter so runs between 40-100% of needed load. Air handler is also variable speed and runs as needed by the condenser load.
I had originally looked at the mini-split but with this newer technology I can just replace the condenser unit and air handler saving me $$ on new equipment and cost of running the system. Total system cost is just under $5k.
I'll report back once completed.
