I’ve gotten headaches somewhat regularly starting from when I was a kid.

Then at some point in my early 40’s, they turned into migraines.

Anyone else get them?
Do you prevent them, or do you treat them at the onset/aura?

I spent the better part of yesterday in the ER, was in the absolute worst pain I’ve yet experienced. My neurologist’s clinic actually turned me away, told my wife to take me to the ER or they’d call 911 and have an ambulance take me.

Sucked ass.
But I’m good now.

I had them for years. Certain smells or foods would trigger it and there was no stopping it. I don’t get them very often now, one Budlight and I’ll be in bed for 12 hours. The smell of hotdogs, instant migraine. I used to take Zomig, but I think that shit is bad for you. It makes my heart feel like it’s gonna explode. I’m sure it damaged my heart or took some life out of it.

I had what the Dr called "cluster headaches". Would come on quickly and after about an hour of excruciating pain would stop just as quickly. Pain would be on one side(usually my right). After many years of just dealing with it, my current Dr suggested mushrooms! Yep "those mushrooms" 1/4 the recreational dose she told me.
Desperate to end the pain, I searched out getting some shooms. Where I was met by
old friends with an expected "jesus dude grow the fuck up!" So I never confirmed that to be accurate.

Good news though.. I can confirm that she was right about another thing, after 50 years old cluster headaches seem to not exists.

Good luck. And as my dad always said: it'll feel better when it quits hurting!

Had them when I was a teenager, they stopped when I turned 20. Dark room and a handful of Excedrin was what worked best. Worst one I had I couldn't talk, almost like having a stroke.

My wife gets them. As you mentioned, if you can stop it at the onset, it makes a huge difference. She has some gnarly prescription pill she takes if it get real bad. I can't remember the name, but it may as well be a horse tranquilizer. She's out cold for 8+ hours.

What she has found, are these CBD tarts. THC free little candy things. She can pop one of those when she feels one coming on. 9 times out of 10, they work. Hers seem to stem from a combination of a concussion and a car accident the same year. I'm sure what causes different headaches plays a role in what helps them.

Change your diet no carbs no sugar no headaches
It sure as hell seems to help. Has something to do with "free radicals" as the sugars aggravate things is what I've read. Not so much with my wife, but been learning about this with my son's issues as well.

Dated a gal and both her & sister were flight attendants. and both suffered.. man what a curse those fuckers are.... she'd sometimes have to pull off the road if started seeing flashing bright lights indicating one was coming on. My job was to turn ac on high, close all blinds to complete darkness and leave her the hell alone while she laid in bed till it passed. She did enjoy it if I gripped her head squeezing her temples like a grapefruit though... and I mean hard as I could squeeze. She said that pressure felt good.

I don't get the migraines that come with debilitating pain, but instead I get optical migraines where I essentially go blind(ish) for approx 30-45 min. If I'm driving and I start to get one, I have to find a place to pull over and hang out until it passes. Usually it's followed by a headache, but not terrible. The first time I ever had one I thought I was having a stroke.

Below is a pretty good depiction of what it is like, only it takes 30-45 min to go away.

Holy Crap! This is exactly what I get and could never explain it! Its like a part of my vision is blurred in the middle then moves to the edge, with a puslation.

Damn near had to pull over last month on the 405.

Thanks for putting a name to it. Usually passes in 45 mins then a kild headache!

Yep, since I was a kid, as well. Crushed Excederine, sugar mixed with water was the fix back then. Advil and a dark room now. I try to stay ahead of them as I can feel them coming on. Hydration seems to play a role. Coffee withdrawals, as well.

Yes. And damn they suck. Whether you want to call the migraines or cluster headaches. As said above. Used to lose my eyesight and become physically sick. Tried many different medicines. If you were lucky enough to feel one coming on and get ahead of it that was always the best. I remember banging my head against the headboard wishing just cut my Fn head off. Then I found exederine migraine worked best for me.
Never tried the Botox. ( I did steal some of my MIL morphine drops more than once though. Sometimes you just gotta do what ya got to do) But thankfully I have not had one in almost a year. Hope I didn’t jinx it.
I feel for you all who get these. Nothing worse when they happen.

I get "painless" on occasion (just the glistening aura) they last about 10 minutes The Wifes had them (sevier) for the entire time we've been together , first one scare Us to death because it manifested with aphasia . Hers were debilitating to the point they could "take her out" for most of a day The came Imetrex and that was the go to for years (but it made her "dopey" , recently she got a script for a sublingual Nurtec new med that knocks them almost immediately with 0 after/side effects They have been a god send for Her

I used to get them a lot in college. When they were at their worst I would puke uncontrollably, and sometimes somewhat blackout. I woke up one time on the ground in my front yard with my truck parked in the street, running lol. Doctors told me it was something I would grow out of.

I only get about 1-2 a year at most now. I am not sure what was causing mine, but likely stress. The ones I get now are nowhere near as bad as 20 years ago tho. Mostly the peripheral vision deal, splitting headache and have to try to fall asleep in a dark room. If I can manage to fall asleep, usually when I wake up they are gone but I feel exhausted.

I have noticed that certain lights do it to me. Some of the conference rooms at work have these weird lights that really eff with my eyes. I started wearing a hat all day, even inside and that seems to have helped a ton for some reason!!

They do suck. People that haven’t had one and call a bad headache a “migraine” have no idea.

My trigger is pretty specific
Have your Dr prescribe Nurtec , a new migraine pain treatment . Look it up
i was on sumatriptan and now I’m using Ubrelvy.

Each seems to work equally, but ubrelvy costs my insurance company 10x more so I’m sure that’s why he switched me to it.

Yup, I was squeezing the hell out of my own head yesterday. My left temple feels like someone used it as a punching bag.

Yeah the clinic sent me to the ER partly because they said I was hyperventilating and they were concerned.

My migraines cause my sinuses to instantly clog, and I had the dry heaves because of the pain…so yeah, it was a little hard to breathe

My trigger is lack of sleep…hard to get sleep with a toddler and newborn

Chile Peppers: Numerous studies suggest that the capsaicin in hot peppers like jalapenos and habaneros can help fight all kinds of pain, including migraines and other headaches. And the web is full of stories from chileheads who swear they've received relief from spicy foods (especially spicy soup).Mar 7, 2014

Damn. I feel for you. And know what you’re going through. I used Imetrex. Spelling ? Worked for an awhile but like many others. They eventually don’t work as good. Hope you feel better

Also as stupid as it sounds. White noise can be a cure. I have laid with my head in a closet and the vacuum running. It does work…… sometimes. You will try anything.

I can take 8 Excedrines and 8 Tylenol and it doesn’t even make a dent. Literally OTC pain relievers are worthless for me. Only a dark quiet place and a few hours makes a difference. Once I fall asleep I almost always wake up better.

If I catch it in time and realize what it is and what’s coming, I’ll take two Excedrin and drink a Coca-Cola. If I miss it, just turn the lights off go to sleep my day is over.

The smell of mustard on a hot dog or Pinesol were the biggest triggers for me. Cluster headaches differ from migrains as they last a short while. One hour for me. One hour of pain that would seem unbearable. Air-conditioning vent would work one day. Hot shower steam the next. I always knew when they would come as one eye would turn red and be half closed. No pain meds seemed to help due to the headaches only lasting an hour or so.

Sure am glad the dr was right about them stopping after 50

One of the few benefits of being an old fucker!

Just recently, I get headaches on my left side of my head. Kinda starts at my neck and spirals forward towards my temple.
The weird thing is, I rarely get headaches. This started a week ago Wednesday (~10 days ago)
A couple of Excedrin and it goes away after a while. I'm on daily low dose 81 mg aspirin already (heart patient). Seems odd that they've been fairly consistent in mid afternoon, 3-4 pm ish.
Concerned but not worried, but my pops didn't survive a brain tumor.
Probably psychosomatic? I don't know.

Yep. Mine always start wilt aura, poor vision then what looks like tearing multicolor jagged lines in both eyes open or closed. Usually lasts 10-20 mins, then 10 mins or so pain sets in. At first symptoms 2 excedrin migraine. Will control pain to a dull ache, 1 or 2 more after 4 hrs. After, even into the next day feels like a hang over headache.

Man I never thought about the sleep aspect. Looking back, when I was in college and having them frequently we had a newborn.

I bet that does play a large factor for sure.

My wife gets the Botox and was on some other med . Whatever the name of the med was I don’t remember. But it should be called “ can’t remember shit drug” . It would fuck with her short and long term memory . Scary shit. It’s like early onset Alzheimer’s when she takes it. My headaches are usually combined with memory loss also. But it’s called drinking too much and hangover . I prescribe hair of the dog

I felt like I was gonna crush her skull but she just kept saying harder, harder.... man I felt so bad for her. Tough. That was when we were 25 and I still know her at 60 now but she never brings migraines up so perhaps doesn't get them any longer.

2 years ago I had them for a month and a half straight….every fucking day…multiple times a day.

Some lasting for 4 hours. I was curled up in a ball under the sheets hating life. Showers somewhat help as the water hitting my head seem to drown out the pain in my head.

I tried almost everything brain scan, Coca Cola, medication, some kind of pills….didn’t get to Botox but was looking into it.

Come to find out I needed a newer prescription for my glasses.

Within a week getting the new glasses they were gone.

I hope you find something that works for you

I get precursors, pinpoint lights or jagged light waterfalls and blurred vision, symptoms abate and then 30-45 min later the freight train hits. 3 days in a dark room, nausea. Now when the precursors start, 2 Excedrin Migraine chugged with a regular Coke or Dr Pepper. Headache doesnt happen, but precursors may appear for several days, treated with same medications.

I have had migraines for 30 years. I get a 30 min warning with the ocular migraine as @DaytonaBabe mentioned. It's followed by a severe migraine. I have tried half a dozen different meds over the years. I have been using Frovatriptan for the past 5 years with great results. I also take this...

Pill with imprint B 074 is Blue & Yellow, Capsule-shape and has been identified as Ascomp with Codeine asprin 325mg / butalbital 50mg / caffeine 40mg / codeine phosphate 30mg. It is supplied by Breckenridge Pharmaceutical, Inc.

I find being really dehydrated and eating too much sugar can trigger them.

Bumping this thread up for reference. Been a busy last week with my Ocular Migraines. With the Aura. Have had about 4 episodes

I realized that light is a trigger for mine. If I am driving and the Sun is reflecting off the cars roof at a certain point, its a trigger. This morning was something on my computer monitor that triggered. I have been episode free for about a year, so it really is random.

Hope everyone is doing well also that suffers.

Would polarized sunglasses make a difference or non polarized if yours are polarized?

You might want your Dr to prescribe this . I don’t get migraines , but consistent headaches . This really helps .

Curious on that. What sucks is I have a Clear tint on my front windshield and some polarized glasses give it a rainbow effect.

Going to research a bit more , much appreciated.

I don't think this would be an option for you...at least I don't think...but my wife got an ear piercing that was like a switch. It has something to do with the way the nerves effect things, but it's like a permanent acupuncture deal. Hers could be set off by certain smells (gasoline and asphalt being two), certain noises and florescent lights. Even with meds, could be down for a day, and kind of hungover the next. It's been three months, and hasn't had one. She used to get two or three a month. I think it's called a "daith" piercing?

So funny that this thread got bumped.

For the first time in 3 years I had a migraine a day ago

I felt it coming while I was driving in traffic.

I think it was from me being dehydrated. Not sure.

Hope it doesn’t come back.

I am not a pro at this by any means nor do I have a complete diagnosis but my Vertigo issues I'm fighting are looking to be migraine headaches I don't actually feel.

I never knew this was a thing until both my ENT "Meniere's Disease" specialist and my PT brought it up individually.

Migraines you cant immediately feel but cause the dizziness and spinning. Searching for the pattern past couple weeks and this might just be what I'm fighting.

A simple solution is to have a portable oxygen bottle handy. When the symptoms start, start huffing on that thing.
Chemicals in your brain restrict blood flow resulting in less oxygen. 100% oxygen will help alot.

Had a small one right now!

Chugged a Coca Cola, popped some advil, and hid under a blanket to get away from the bright sun.

Only lasted 10 mins thank god!

Fucking the smell of pork sausage cooking on the stove triggered it.

But I think it was really due to being on an empty stomach. Maybe it’s a sugar level thing?

I have been drinking a lot of water so I can rule out dehydration.

Few days ago when I got one I was also on an empty stomach and the trigger was the bright sun.

I seem to be triggered by sharp sounds. Unfortunately my Aussie's bark is hard for me to deal with. I am the only dude at Parris Raceway watching the night of destruction with my shooting headphones on. Those 4 cyl no muffler cars are mega shrill.

I hate feeling like this.

Well I got another one….fuck.

Made an appointment with my optometrist as I think my vision/prescription changed.

That was my cure three years ago.
