Nic does your buddy rent out the yard space for trailer boats? Sounds ideal.
It was empty for like 10 years. They recently raised his rent and he asked me what would help offset it. Not sure if still empty I can call him. Probably fit 6 40' boats there from what I recall.

I had a 2008 400SS with 525's
at first i had a lift at the house then ended up getting it bottom painted,
awesome boat, handles rough water pretty darn good, held up really well for being in the ocean the 4 years i had it,
ran 50mph easily, 60 was top end, i'm 6'4" and could not quite stand up down in the cabin, a PC i can,
Bed was comfortable, shower, heater and ac worked great, lots of good times with it
boat is built very well, never had issues with anything coming lose or falling apart and it did get air time
i flushed the motors every time we ran it, only took few minutes,

Only downside of the boat was trailering, i had a myco fifth wheel trailer and we had it set up with the boat as low as we could on it, still had to take lights, radar off to trailer, put flags and banners on, figure it was a 3 hour deal to get it ready to trailer or same to set back up in the water, that was with just me doing everything,
i towed it once with a F450 ONCE never did that again, with sport chassis it was no problem, same with Peterbilt,

Where’s the pic of it behind your Pete? Love that shot.

To the OP. I’d personally avoid an
Outdrive boat for storing in salt water. As others have suggested, I’d set your sites on a direct drive boat preferably with diesles
If you’re gonna actually use it other than partying at the dock.

As others have said, best ocean boat to have is a friends! Lol You’re basically placing your boat in a vat of acid that is attacking everything metal 24/7. And it’s not just from what is under the water, wind, ocean spray, mist, fog, sun, beat the shit out of a slipped ocean boat. Have two good friends that slip their cruisers in our harbor. A 40 carver and a 38 meridian. It’s NON STOP maintanence.

Not trying to talk you out of it, just do your homework.

The sweet spot for trailering and towing is 10 foot wide and under. That allows you to operate under an annual watercraft oversized permit. Only banners and flags to tow it. Unfortunately that limits you to “290” sized boats. Those size boat are 34-36 feet long.

Anything wider and you need at least one pilot car and you have to pull permits every time.

Formula 40 pc has a 12.5 foot beam. If you try moving that without permit I would be surprised if you got away with it, but I am sure people do it?

My 290 at 10 foot wide gives me about 6 inches on each side from the painted lines on a normal road lane.

Good thing I’m a Peterbilt dealer now! Haha!!

I wouldn’t be moving it though. Perhaps just to pull it out of the water once it’s there.

My buddy Fred just arrived at Catalina from mission bay yesterday on the sailboat he inherited from his deceased dad. First trip he’s made since he has owned for 5 years. On what would have been his dad’s birthday. Very cool!

Our wives a childhood best friends so I’ve got Kim working double time sellin the boat idea.

I swear my next boat will have AC and a head.. take a look at XO boats as well! Smaller and easier to manage
Here on the SoCal coast we've never had the need for AC/heat on our boat, the air temps on the water remain relatively temperate year round. We stripped the four chillers out of the engine room to make room for a water-maker, a large tool box, storage, etc. The heads, . . yes!

Reminds me of the guy in Phx, maybe hot boat days that did the big blue thing and trailered it with a semi.

Magic30 or similar screen name. His dad was big in the drywash car products or something.

That was @Magic34 (Mike Yanke). He had a 40SS then went bigger, then sold the ocean boat. He 100% misses escaping PHX for SD weekends on the boat

That’s Mike. He had a freight liner medium duty I believe. Waiting for him to return for Powell to get his 2 cents.

I met a guy and his wife named “mike” with a formula 40 on Powell over Memorial Day. Or at least I think it was mike? But he said he’s from Vegas or Vegas is where he kept his formula. His wife and him had an ownership stake in Foxes.

Yeah nice guy. Gave me a pile of detail stuff to try. The hilarious post I recall was him asking, if for some reason he had to get in the water to pick up a ball in Catalina how to keep from getting eaten by a shark. :)

surprisingly not a lot of failures in that regard. 496s will have bravo3x and blue motors will have bravo3xr behind them from the several I work on.

they do eat gimbal rings like theyre going out of style without external hydraulic steering tho

Yep and what was surprising was that i only blew one drive the whole time i had it 400 hours most of it just cruising around. when i did blow the drive it was after a really rough ride back from Catalina 90 miles and it did a lot of air time . but it made it back. the next trip out one drive just said it was over, so rebuilt both. the other drive was a little bit of sad shape thou
And considering that she lived in the salt i sure was impressed with them

I got a ton of input on this, but to sum it up, go sit at a marina and see how many people dont even use their boats:) I could never figure that out!

I would suggest staying away from an Express Cruiser. You feel like in a cave all the time. My goal boat is like a Tiara 31 with a huge deck, the more deck the better. Or a Noreaster type boat. You will want to entertain on the deck.

Like others have said, slip and maint gets pricey! Just go in knowing that. Remember, all your running gear in the water is like sitting in an acid bath. Its so corrosive, and plan accordingly.
I had an older 31 Tiara with a partner for 3 years or so. Had 454s and truley a big deck. Quite a few weekend trips to Catalina. Kept it docked at Cabrillo Marina in San Pedro. My (50%) end always seemed to average about $800 or so monthly. The slip, monthly cleaning, zincs, etc. added up. Almost annually it was something big that hit me for another few thousand. If you didn’t totally keep off the throttles, gas was $700 plus to the island and back.

After a while I was over it. A lot of, planning, driving (there and back), cleaning, and shopping. The last year I think I used it 3 times.

Nice memories but I don’t think I would do it again.

My partner was exceedingly cool and actually lived in San Pedro. He was into diving and the boat worked out well for him. I ended up selling my end to him and, as far as I know, he still owns it.

Believe it or not, I found him via an ad I placed on Craig’s List. I wanted a sports fisher but not 100% of the cost. I identified the boat first. It was purchased from a Broker in Huntington Beach.

We had a decent written agreement and I kept a running account of expenses in google drive, while receipts were scanned and kept in a dropbox file. We opened a joint bank account to pay expenses at Chase and both of us could deposit, transfer or write checks at will. Never once did we have a problem paying our end of things, on time and in full. From that perspective, it was a really good experience.

I also had a 28 Warlock cat at the time (twin 502s) so boating was hitting the monthly budget in a fairly big way.

That 400SS is AWSOME. I was admiring it fueling up, then he started the engines, holy shit, after idling out of the marina he got on plane and Fuckin' unbelievable. You could see the rooster tails and hear the engines roar for miles.

Same thing I do in a larger scale. I remember being on the smaller yacht 20 years ago. And asking how many more houses do I have to build to buy me 1 of these.

They never stop working. Always Hustling.
